Multifocal IOL implant

I had a Tecnis multifocal IOL implanted after cataract removal 6 days ago in my right eye..   Supposed to get my left eye, the dominant one, done in 5 more days.  The result so far is not good, still very blurry vision, have to close that eye in order to be able to read anything close or far.  Nighttime halos so huge, red and glaring, impossible to even attempt to drive in the dark.  Was told both eyes need to have this implant for good results.   My question:   would implanting the same kind of  IOL in my left eye help balance my eyes and thereby restore my eyesight?     I am 81 years old, still working, use a computer  many hours a day, I am afraid to go ahead with this second surgery.   I would appreciate your thoughts.  Thank you.

This information needs to come from your surgeon.

If your vision can be corrected to 20/20 with glasses then the problem is one of "refractive error"  if it cannot be corrected with glasses then it could be a medical complication such as swelling of the retina (Cystoid macular edema).

Have your surgeon's team do a glasses test (refraction) and see if vision improves. Then discuss with surgeon.

Dear Dr. Hagan,
A fews more questions if I may.  It is day 10 from my cataract surgery with Tecnis Multifocal implantation.  Vision went from 20/80 before surgery to now 20/150 in that eye.   How long should I wait for the "healing" process to improve vision before I seek a remedy.   Thank you for your thoughts.

Yes that is the last option and only after you've had a couple of independent second and third opinion and that's what they both recommend. You may still come out of the woods okay.

I thank you most sincerely for your reply to my inquiry. I am glad you agree with me that I should hold off until my right eye becomes usable.  I am wondering if it is possible to successfully remove an implanted IOL .  Or should that be the absolute last option?     Thank you, Sir.

Consider stronly putting off the surgery on the second eye until things get better or you work through this problem. What you should notice by now is: 1. the operative eye is the clearest eye 2. colors are much brighter in operative eye  3. there should be some distance (far, near, medium) that is quite clear. 4. The night vision should be as good or better out of the operated eye.

Any question at all get a second opinion. Do not be intimidated into having the second eye done.

In our practice we want a happy patient with first eye before surgery on second eye.
