Debbie,
I have been having this problem for a few years now. I first began wearing glasses at the age of 12 after an eye injury shortly before that. Up to this point, I had 20/20 or better vision. I didn't need to wear my glasses very often at first; but as my eyes got worse, after about two years, I had to wear them full time. With every year or so that I went to the eye doctor my prescription got worse. I went through about 4 pairs of glasses with progressively stronger prescriptions, from the time I was 14 to the time I was 19.
As a cheerleader my senior year of high school; who did tumbling (flips), I became frustrated that my glasses would fall off during performances and basketball games. This moved me to see my doctor and inquire about contacts; although I was scared of putting them in my eyes (The first time I put in the contacts it took me close to four hours). Once I got the hang of contacts I loved the convenience of being able to wear them when I was active. But they often bothered my eyes, so having my glasses as well worked out great. Unfortunately I was in a bicycle accident shortly after high school, breaking three bones as well as my glasses in the process. Up and to this point, I could see perfectly through every pair of glasses that I had.
But having contacts I was in no rush to get a new pair of glasses and waited about two years ‘til I was in College in Kansas (I am from Alaska) to get another pair. At the time that I decided to get a new pair of glasses, I wasn’t seeing too well through my contacts anymore; so I found a new doctor in Kansas City at the local Costco. I left her office the day I saw her, seeing everything crisp, clear and vividly; it was like my eyes had opened up to a whole new world with my new contact prescription. That day I finally decided to order another pair of glasses. The glasses took about 3 weeks to arrive; but as soon as I put them on I knew that something was wrong. I could see perfectly through my contacts; but with the glasses although I could see everything sharp, it seemed like that world was distorted, as if I were looking through coke bottles. Every time that I moved my head it looked like the world was wobbling like a house full of crazy mirrors. This caused nausea, headaches and even pain in my eyes, that was unbearable. The optician suggested that I wear the glasses for a couple weeks and see how my eyes adjusted. This was nearly impossible as I could only wear them for about 20 minutes before I absolutely had to take them off.
Costco had a no return policy on glasses; but I was unhappy with them. Fortunately, they worked with me and sent them back to the maker about 7 times; moving the focal point around, changing the material and trying a few more things to see if it would help, to no avail. Finally they let me return the glasses for a full refund. Discouraged, I just wore my contacts and didn’t bother trying to get another pair of glasses for a little while. But sick of contacts before long I decided to try again. With little hope at the time I decided to go to the local Wal Mart because they would accept returns on glasses… To my surprise, the glasses that I got worked perfectly! I wore these glasses for a little over a year, before they too were broken in an accident. I was back in Alaska at this time and immediately went to my doctor to get my script updated and to get a new pair of glasses. Again, I could see perfect through my contacts, but this time I had the same problem with the glasses as the one’s from Costco. After about six months I gave it one more try, again I had the same issue. In all three incidents when this happened, the opticians were stumped and said that in all of their time, I was the only person who ever had this problem. I feel hopeless, as I have come to my wits end with contacts, at first they were convenient, but have just become a hassle. I am going to continue to look for answers and hope to one day wear glasses again. Please know you are not alone in your frustrations, and if you find out any information about what is going on with our eyes, please let me know.
Best of luck,
Sean (yeah_toast12***@****)
