Why don't multifocal lenses provide reading ability?

I had Restor lenses implanted in both eyes during cataract surgery in order to avoid use of bifocals.  They provide acceptable distance vision, but absolutely no reading capability.  Post-surgery astigmatism does not exceed Restor's limitation.  Why should these expensive lenses not do what they are supposed to do?

Your surgeon's postop attitude is infuriating.  Get another opinion (or more than one) from a surgeon who is experienced with ReStor.

The surgeon recommended and implanted these lenses, but had no explanation for their lack of reading ability, nor any further recommendations.  It's not likely that the pupils are too large; if so, he should have known this before the implants went in.

There are probably many reasons.  Possibly your pupil size is too large to access the near vision zone.  What does your surgeon say?
