Blunt eye trauma from badminton shuttle

A month and a half back i was hit by a badminton shuttle in the eye. I had turned to look back and unfortunatly my partner hit the shot with full force in my left eye. I was in the hospital immediately. After regular follow ups i have been told that there is no major issue. I have a mild cataract and a power of +3.75.

My question is will this power go with time? The doctor asked me to wear specs but its like a magnifying glass and i am not comfortable with it. Also, pupil is mid dialated. My pinhole vision is 6/6. Please give me some hope as this is very depressing.

Hello Kshama, i am currently in a quite similar situation, I hurt my right eye with a shuttlecock pretty bad the same way you did. How is your eye right now? What did the doctors say about any permanent damage in the future? I am really scared since my injury looks pretty serious too.

You have had major damage to your eye:  you have a cataract, your pupil does not work right (traumatic iridoplegia) and your muscle is not able to focus right (traumatic loss of accommodation).  Moreover with such force to the eye your cataract will probably progress and you could develop down the line traumatic glaucoma or retinal detachment. It is possible over a 6 month post injury that your pupil and ability to focus could improve but not infrequently these are permanent.  The injury did not make your farsighted (+3.75) but before the injury your eye could correct it (you must be young, people 35 or older usually have to wear glasses for this).

LESSON TO LEARN FOR ANY READERS: Wear eye protection for contact sports and racquet sports and activities that lend themselves to eye injury (power tools, welding, mowing yard, weed eater, firearms, etc)
Thanks a lot for the information. I am 32. Can i expect this to improve. Its plain bad luck but i do not want this to be permanent. Its been a month now since the injury and the doctor told me that the pupil somewhat reacts to light however its mid dialated now. I am using timolo, myticom and nevanac eye drops 12 hourly. Please help!
I just told you and I’m sure you’re ophthalmologist told you that your eye will not get back to normal. It may improve over where its at now but you have permanent damage that will not go away and may get worse. Start working on protecting the good eye from injury and disease.
Using timolol indicates you also have high intraocular pressure and likely traumatic glaucoma in addition to the cataract-pupil-focus problems.
Hi Kshama,

How are you getting on?
I'm in similar situation but post surgery and hoping for the best.
How does your eye look when it's middilated? Are the edges of the pupil even?

Sasha
