Photo Maculopathy

I went to my optometrist yesterday and he said it looks like I have damage to my macula. I am 28 years old. I'm not a welder and don't recall being exposed to any intense light. He gave me a chart to test whether my macula will degenerate further and told me to take a multivitamin for prevention. My question is: Is degeneration possible from intense light? Could there be another reason for my macula is damaged? He didn't refer me to an ophthalmologist. But he gave me reason for worry.

You need to see an ophthalmologist, if possible a retina specialist. In my opinion you should have been referred. Welding does not usually damage the macular rather it is hard on the cornea
