Vision prognosis for 50yo w/ Normal Pressure Glaucoma

Yesterday I got the diagnosis of NPG, I have been followed as suspect d/t abnormal shape to optic nerve. and deteriorating field vision tests.  Both my sisters are currently being followed, we are all in our 50's.  We have blindness in our father's family, out of 9children, 3 were totally blind from Retinitis Pigmantosa.  No hx of glaucoma on either side.  I am the youngest of the 3.  Today I started tx with Timolol drops daily.  I notice a decrease in my vision, and is much worse on the L.  What is the prognosis, should I expect partial or total blindness at some point.  Beyond the medications what else is there?  Thank you for any input...Cece08

Glaucoma causes total blindness in both eyes less than 0.01 people. In 97% or so it can be controlled. Most cases that go blind do so because of late diagnosis (they don't have their eyes checked regularly) or its their own fault (not use medicine, not go to an ophthalmologist).

Does glaucoma cause total blindness in all cases eventually?

There is no way to establish "odds"of retaining good vision because of the huge number of variables. You can maximize your chances of keeping sight all your life by faithful use of your medications and regualr visits to your Ophthalmologist.

Beyond medications or laser or surgery there is an admonition to "take care of yourself" Watch diet, blood pressure, cholesteral, weight, don't smoke, exercise, etc.
