eye pain and redness

When I wake up in the morning my left eye hurts pretty bad.  A dose of ibuprofen helps.  It is like a headache behind my eye and it hurts to move my eye around to look at things.  My eye is also red and irritated in the inner corner where I can see blood vessels.  It doesn't water much, maybe a little.  Sometimes it feels like there is something in it, but only when I first wake up.  There is no gunk built up when I wake up.  I have to floaters or blurry vision.
I went to the doctor at a med center and he examined my eye with a microscope and found no foreign matter or ingrown eyelashes.  He aslo found no scratches on my cornea, although I do remember scratching my eye with my finger nail just before the symptoms appeared.  I do remember rubbing my eyes pretty hard before these symptoms arised.  I felt as though I may have done some damage.  The symptoms eased up within a few days and then got worse and then eased up and then got worse...etc.  It's going on 3 weeks now and the antibacterial eye drops that the doc gave me, although seemed to work at first are not working anymore as when I woke up this morning the symptoms were worse than they'd ever been.  I just got the eye drops 3 days ago, so I don't know if I've given them enough of a chance to work.  Also, I'm in the sun and water alot and am wondering if this is irritating my condition and keeping my eye from healing.  I have an ophthalmologist appointment in two days, but any advice or answers would be GREATLY appreciated as I do not currently have health insurance.

It sounds like you may have recurrent corneal errosion syndrome. This has been discussed in the eye forums please use the archives and search feature to learn more about it. Also use an internet search engine and look the term up. This is sometimes due to a corneal dystrophy. Ask your ophthalmologist about this when you go in AND ASK THE TECHNICIANS NOT TO USE ANY DROPS ON THE CORNEA TILL THE OPHTHALMOLOGIST LOOKS AT YOUR CORNEA.
