bright light at eyes

so, my sister was at school today. The teacher was using a projector screen to show us something on the screen. so my sister was in front of the screen talking to the teacher and the bright colorful light went directly at her eyes . ( it was supposed to be on the screen but she was in front of it) her eyes were kind of irritated and uncomfortable , but is the projector light dangerous and will it damage her eyes and how would she know.

i'm talking about the type of projector light that is like on the ceiling and different colors of light  come out of it , in order to project something on to the screen. the light is really bright, are you sure that it's not dangerous. is the light a type of laser or just regular.
