corneal scratch, still pain 1 yr later

I accidentally scratched my eye with wire from a hamster cage a year ago. I went to the eye doctor maybe a month later for an eye exam to get glasses, I let the Optometrist know that I still had eye pain from the scratch and that I had been using Visine. He told me that I had a scratch on my cornea and to use Theratears. I still have pain if I rub that eye when I wake up in the morning or if I don't use the drops. I have dry eyes naturally but I am concerned about the eye pain at this point because I was told that it would heal quickly with the drops. What could be happening with the eye injury for it not to heal? Is it possible that this is a deeper scratch past the cornea? I believe it scratched the white of the eye, I haven't had any vision problems.

You are describing a classic case of recurrent corneal erosion. Use the search feature here and Google search engine to look up "recurrent corneal erosion".  

Make and appointment with an Eye MD physician-ophthalmologist to estabilish a firm diagnosis and begin treatment. When you see the eye MD don't let the technicians put any drops in your eye till the Eye MD sees you. Tell the Eye MD you think you have recurrent corneal erosion syndrome.
