Eye trauma treatment

Went through serious eye trauma in left eye on 11/10/2015.

Had Corneosceral tear and went through Globe repair on 11/10/2015. We did VER on 31/10/2015 which revealed anterior visual pathway defect in left eye and USG revealed Total retinal detachment. Doctors in India are prescribing Enucleation for Phthisical eye.

Was wondering if theres any hope of recovery or is enucleation the best course. Thanks in advance for your valuable time and advice

Remember again PROTECT your good eye from injury, from eye and sytemic disease live a healthy lifestyle, avoid eye injury, don't smoke, keep your good eye protected. JCH MD

There is a book, out of print, you can buy on ebay or Google called "A Singular View" the art of seeing with one eye. It would be worth purchasing and reading.

As I said in my post I can't tell but this is a general guideline. If an eye is totally blind and does not have a tumor in it an enucleation is not done unless the eye is painful or terribly disfigured and a scleral shell cosmetic eye cannot be fit over the blind eye.  At some point in the future you might be helped if there is still an eye or a "long" optic nerve.

Unfortunately the optic nerve is also damaged as per the doctor! Am still awaiting a second opinion and will look out for options for the scleral shell as well. Thanks again for the response

Yes, get a second and third opinion. If the eye is not painful it might be possible to leave it.  There is  much work being done on artificial eyes with one called Argus 2 now in use for some cases (yours would not be a good candidate.  Some day it might be possible to salvage some vision. A cosmetic shell can usually be fitted over the damaged eye to give it a normal appearance. Only if the 2nd and 3rd opinions recommend removal would it likely be the best course.

ALSO don't forget to take super good care of your remaining eye. Protecting from injury, disease, lead a healthy lifestyle, don't smoke, have regular eye exams regular physical exams and you should probably wear protective glasses all times even if your good eye not need glasses. If you do anything like mow yard you need industrial type protective eye shields

Many Thanks for the prompt reply,
Just a follow-up question:

Would enucleation really be needed here? I mean is there absolutely no hope say via any future research or stem cells etc?

Thanks
