retinal tear

Would a retinal tear only occur in one eye?  If so, would a person see floaters and flashes of light in both eyes?

Im in need of your help... last summer in July I got an eye exam for the complaints of seeing white spots and the examiner dilated my pupils and she said she doesn't see anything wrong...after the exam i continue to see white spots every now and again...at the time i didn't  know how to explain myself.. after looking into this with more greater concerns, the experience i am probably having maybe floaters... Dr im very nervous  can you assist me with some answers...

1. sometimes 2. sometimes one eye could have a tear the other eye just a PVD
