That's an excellent answer from JodieJ and I can't improve on it at all.

I also have a less than perfect retina and a history of vitrectomy surgery. Last year (while I was waiting for the cataract which was sure to develop post-vitrectomy), I did a lot of research as to whether multifocal lenses would be contraindicated for me. The opinions of the cataract surgeons I consulted were divided. But based on everything I had read, I decided that multifocal lenses (and IOLs made of silicone, such as the Crystalens and certain monofocal lenses) would be a bad idea in my case. I'm very happy today that I chose acrylic monofocal lenses (with the approval of my retinal specialist.).
If your vision is slightly impaired before cataract surgery due to retinal damage, it will be slightly impaired post cataract surgery. That doesn't mean, however, that your vision won't be significantly improved post cataract surgery. Best of luck.
