D&C = possible infertility

2 years ago I had a miscarriage. I stayed pregnant for almost four months but apparently it had died after 4 weeks, my body didn't let go so I had to get a D&C. Ever since then I have been trying to get pregnant. It only took about two times of having sex with my ex husband before i got pregnant, though i lost it. Now, after two years of trying, a year and a half with my new partner who has two kids from a previous relationship I finally went to the "baby doctor". He sat me down and asked me about my d&c. I told him it went perfectly. I had no infection, was able to resume everything normally. my period came back a month later. My cycle are regular even now they are perfect. He tested my progesterone and say i was at a 9 point something which is good so he guesses its not progesterone that i need. So he says he believes i am ovulating. He said for me to STOP using lubricant because apparently that can kill sperm and i use it ALL the time. He also is testing my fiance's sperm count even though he already has two kids. He says apparently its rare but it can happen to wear sperm count can randomly lower. He ordered me an HSG test to see if my D&C has something to do with me not getting pregnant because of scarring or something, my question is: Is it rare for D&C to have something to do with infertility and if it turns out its caused by the D&C how do they cure me to be able to get pregnant?

I'm sorry you are going through this. I developed scarring after a DNC but my situation was a little different. I wasn't getting a period because the blood was being blocked by the scarring but many that have the scarring still get a period but most say it is a very light blotchy type bleeding and not a full flow. The HSG will give you the answers you need. You can even request valium if you are that nervous about it but usually 800 ibuprophen should do the trick. It's not the most comfortable thing in the world, but it isn't awful. You will definitely be able to get through it.  The good thing is that they will be able to tell right away if they see a problem with the uterus or tubes. Hopefully you don't have scarring and it's just some other bizare thing as to why you can't get pregnant. I got pregnant very easily with my son (who is now 3) and when he turned 1, we tried for #2 and have been trying for over 2 years!! No one can tell me why i can't get pregnant again -it's baffling.

On another note - have you tried the ovulation kits. Clearblue easy has the most user friendly digital version that can tell you the best 2 days to try to conceive. Good luck to you!

Hon, you need to do the HSG, I promise it doesn't hurt that much : )  Just take 6-800mgs of ibuprophen before hand.  It may be a little painful,  but it is short lived, and then you will have some answers.  Better to know what's going on, don't you think?

I had 3 d&cs 2 for m/c and 1 because my lining was too thick.  As far as the hsg test being painful and all of that, mine was not at all.  Very minor cramping and a tiny bit of spotting.(had 2 of them only took tylenol for pain once)  It sounds to me like your progesterone is a little on the low side. (im not doctor but based on ur numbers) Most drs like it to be over 10 for an unmedicated cycle and over 15 for a medicated cycle.  I had trouble TTC before I got pg with my first son and it was due to low progesterone.  I got supplements for that and had 2 sons.  (I again had trouble ttc again but it was endometriosis and "age" related stuff.)  I also agree, dont use lube it kills sperm and use ovulation prediction kits and if your not already get on a good multivitamin.  Good luck to you.

Thank you again for answering :) No i dont know how thick it is ive never had that tested. I canceled my HSG test, i was too nervous about the pain. in the papers they gave me they went on and on about how i will have all this pain and cramping and feel dizzy and how i'll need someone to drive me home and not to worry if i bleed after it...it scared me. now what do i do?

Sometime (very rarely), they remove to much lining, and it can't grow back.  But that is rare.  I would wait to see what the HSG shows before worrying about any of that.  The condition, if you would like to lookit up, for the interuterine adhesions, is called ashermans.  You would have a hysteroscopy to remove the adhesions.  Again, I would just wait for the HSG results.  Do you know how thick your lining is during your cycle?

A dnc can cause infertility if it caused interuterine scarring, or if the removed to much of your uterine lining during the dnd.  The HSG will show that.  I do agree to stop using the lubricant, that definately kills sperm, and your chances.  They may be your problem.  Try preseed.... it is suppose to be safe for sperm
