Dye in Cervix Procedure?

I was wondering if anyone could give me the 411 on how this procedure is done.  My hubby and I have only been TTC for about 7 months (feels like 10 years thought) but because my cycles are so off my OBGYN and I have started some simple procedures to make sure we don't have any infertility problems.  Found out yesterday that hubby's swimmers are plentiful and strong!  Phew!!  And so now I am scheduled to go in and have dye injected into my cervix so we can make sure there is no blockage or anything like that.

Has anyone had this procedure and if so, could you tell me what it's like.  Is it painful? Etc?

Thanks!

i had that same exam done on the 22nd of January and it was so painful but thankfully my tubes were not blocked and i had a very bad mess when i got up plus i had my period while during that exam thats why it was so messy but i was a little wuzzy after the exam but they gave me meds for my cramps. And now since that day i have been up and walking around and feeling alot better. I was hurting during the exam but every nurse they had in the exam room was trying to keep me calm but it wasnt working. So thank god that exam is finally over. I am so happy my tubes are open and not blocked because i want a kid so bad. If i have a kid this will be my first one.

Hysterosalpingogram (HSG): dye test; through the cervix, uterus and hopefully out the tubes (too see if they're clear)

Hysterscopy is a camera in the uterus. Looking at lining, fibroids, polyps.

Sonohysterography (SHG) is similar to the hysterosalpinogram except it just puts saline or air in your uterus to get a clearer ultrasound pic (less painful too). Looking at lining, fibroids, polyps but in an ultrasound environment while the hysterscopy looks at the real lining, etc.

I still have some heavy pains meds left over from a wisdom tooth extraction....I'm starting to think I might need that instead of the advil!

I had an HSG last month, and it was the worst experience in my life.  I have cervical stenosis, so it was difficult to get the catherter through the cervix.  The nurse that was in the room with us, said that the pain i felt is very similar to that of contractions and/or giving birth.  I highly recommend at least 4 advil and your husband by your side....

Good luck!!

Thank you ladies for sharing all of your experiences!  I really appreciate it.  I will be sure to take some medication before going in for the procedure and will plan on taking the rest of the day off.

Question.....if your tubes are blocked, can something be done to open them up?

I have a very small opening in my cervix,  was the wost pain in the world when they dialated my cervix.  It hurt so bad I couldn't have the test done.  I have a high tolerance to pain.  Good luck,  hopefully it wont hurt you as bad.

Hi I had it done in september, its called a hycosy scan I believe, It was a bit tender but nothing major, I had some painful cramping after, so I would recommend taking some painkillers about half hour before. It doesnt take long though so no need to worry, they just put a little balloon like thing & a cafiter in your uterus then force the dye through your tubes..
Mine wasnt blocked thankfully.
Good luck with it all

Definately take some advil before you go in.  I had pretty severe cramping with this procedure.

I had the test (called an HSG) done a couple of hours ago. Did your doctor precribe you antibiotics to take the day before, the dayf and the day after the test? They should have. Also, take 4 advil an hour before, and bring a pad, although they will usually have on for you.

My tubes were 100% clear, but, I hate to tell you, I found the procedure pretty dang painful!!!!! Could be I am just sensitive, though. Also, definitely wear a sheet on your lower half, as the dye and spotting right when you get up is plentiful, and would ruin clothes.

Good luck!

I had the test done also. It was a little painful for me and my tubes are not blocked. Yes, it would be a good idea to wear a pad. Luckily the hospital gave me one.

Thank you both for the info.  It's kind of what I was imagining it would be.  I figured there'd be that uncomfortable feeling you get during your pap smear.  But good to know to expet cramps afterwards.  I wasn't sure if I'd need to take the rest of the day off or not so I'll be sure to put in for that time.

As you said, the dye leaks out.  I'm assuming that wearing a pad afterwards would be a good idea?

Hi There,

I actually just had this test done last week.  It is a little uncomfortable, though not painful.  You will feel some slight cramping during the procedure and some stronger cramps after, so I would take off the remainder of the day if you work.  The test is rather simple, and only takes about 5 minutes.  The inject a dye (make sure your not allergic) and if there are no blockages in the tubes, then the dye will leak right out.  I fortunately didn't have any blockage, but I heard that if you do it is a little more painful.  Nonetheless, you are able to view all of this on the screen above, so you will know right away if there is anything wrong.

Hope all goes well.

I got it done yesterday. First they took a picture of my uterus and ovaries before the procedure so they could have something to compare the test with.  It starts out just like a pap smear.  You put your feet up in stirrups and they insert a speculum inside you to open up your vagina.  They then wiped off my cervix I guess as a precaution.  They inserted a catheter inside the cervic up into the uterus and I guessed they filled it with air or something.  She said it was done to make sure everything stayed in place while taking the pictures.  They then injected the dye which a clear sticky substance.  Don't where a long shirt they said it could ruin it since I only undressed from the pants and below.  After that they took pictures and told me to roll to one side and then to the other side.  They then had me do a complete turn from back to my stomach and then back onto my back.  The procedure itself was easy.  All of ten minutes but I had excruiciating cramps 15-30 minutes after.  Hope that helps.
