Follicle #'s

I had my ultrasound. They said that everything looks wonderful. But here is the thing.

I was 11 DPO on the day of my ultrasound. I had 12+ follicles on each ovary. She knew I had already ovulated, and she said that they all were normal size, no cysts. She stated that it is normal to have many follicles on the ovaries after ovulation, because they may mature next cycle.
So I have lots of follicles on my ovaries way after ovulation, and she said it is supposed to be that way.
Is that true? Are there always follicles sitting on the ovaries? I thought that only happened just prior to ovulation?

The way I understood was that when there are extra follicles after ovulation that they were cysts.  One month after i was on clomid there were left over follicles and my RE said they were cysts and would go away and they did.  So i don't know exactly is going on with you but I would clarify with the doc. . . Hope this helps a little.

As far as I know, every month it is normal to have 4-5 follicles.  Then a dominant one takes over and ovulates.  The rest as I understand it go away or disintigrate after ovulation.  I am just curious if you used clomid this cycle because 12 follicles on each ovary sounds like a lot to me.  If you did not use clomid or other fertility aids I am wondering if you could have PCOS??  Just a thought because when I had an u/s they saw 17 follicles on each ovary and they diagnosed me with PCOS.  If you did use fertility aids, disregard this, as that would be normal as far as I know.
