How are FOLLICLES measured?

OK- stupid question:  When I go for my u/s to see develping folicles they usually tell me numbers like 14 x 16 and 18 x 18 and 12 x 16.

They don't tell me "mm"... how do you all know those sizes?

The nurse told me thay like to add my numbers together, divide by 2 and they like the number to be 16... is that the mm?

They read 5 numbers to me this week with 3 or 4 within that range they like.   I guess that's good if they say so.

Then why do they say the size is "something x something" istaed of just saying it's 15mm?

Why add that confusion to the mix?

They measure in mms.  And there are 10mm in a cm.

If you watch as they measure, they measure from top to bottom and side to side. So, the 14X16 would be 15mm, the 18X18 is 18mm, and the 12X16 is 14 mm.

It's like measuring two sides of a room to come up with the square feet.

Not a dumb question.   Interesting and I had to actually think about it.   To start with the size of the ovaries  are about the size of an almond.  The width of your finger is generally about 1 cm. So if you had a 14cm follicle, that would be pretty big.   Bigger than a baseball.    Have you ever heard about being dialated 10cm for a baby to come out.   So to put things in perspective mm seems more logical answer.  So I'm fairly certain that those measurements are mm.   I never actually questioned it until now.      Correct me anyone if I'm wrong.
