I need help understanding my hormone results

Hi there i recently had my blood tken for hormone tests as i was on deprovera for 2yrs and i hadn`t had my period for 13months after stopping and i couldn`t get pregnant so docs took a look and this is what they found:

Serum LH level 7.1 U/L   Range (2.0-15.0 U)
Serum FSH level 2.7 U/L  Range (1.0-6.9 U)
Serum Oesteradiol level 1168 pmol/L  Range (180-1500 U)
Serum Progesterone 4.7 nmol/L
Prolactin level 525 mu/L Range (60-360 U)

I am 29yrs old and i am not on any medication and my doc says that my prolactin is high but will not give me anything to reduce this:

I also had a proper period on the 28th July and had the tests repeated on the third day and doc did not give me print out he just told me that my prolactin was 600 odd and my estrogen was low but nothing to help!!

Does anyone know what my first results may be indicating? These where took 14days before i bled and doc did say he thought i was going through menapause but not to quote him as he didn`t know too much about hormone tests or their meaning.

Many thanks
Shell

The dr doesn't know much about hormone testing for sure. This panel should not be run mid-cycle. It should be done on cd3 of your cycle. None of these numbers indicate anything to do with menopause. The only one that sends up a flag is the prolactin level. Normal levels are much lower. It warrants further investigation. What kind of dr ran this panel? I would call the nurse and have her send a copy of the 2nd test that was run on the correct day. Those #'s will tell a lot more than these.

Your Prolactin levels look way HIGH and I feel it is the cause for no periods. The normal range when you are not pregnant is < 25. You need to go and check with an endocrinologist or an RE to get the levels down. Other numbers might not be a good picture of your hormone status, because they needs to taken on certain CDs to predict you conditions. I dont think so you are at the menopause stage. IT IS THE PROLACTIN LEVEL and I hate it. I am also suffering from Hyperprolactinoma and currently on Bromocriptine. I responded well to the medicine and with in a month my levels dropped under 20. Also my cycles are more regular and went down from more than 40 days to 28 days now.

Hi thanks to those who have replied :) It was my gp who ran the bloods and same gp who gave me the results:

Today i got a copy of the results from the blood i had taken on the 3rd day of my cycle these are as follows and i still no further forward with doc as to wat they mean;

Serum LH level 4.3 U/L
Serum FSH level 4.5 U/L
Serum oestradiol level 96 says lo from lab and make routine appointment
Serum progesterone 3.3 says lo from lab and to make appointment
Prolactin level 678 says Hi from lab and to make appointment

There is comment down bottom saying:

Comment (Endocrine) -Elevated prolactin- no clinical information given by gp, ?on `OC` pill. MSD

I went for the routine appointment to speak about these tests and as i said in first text that they are not interested and do not know what to do i am really stressed out now and its not helping with the headaches i take and i got my driving test on Wednesday too :(

Thanks again everyone and any help on these ones would be helpful

I would schedule an appointment with your OB or if you don't have one, schedule an appt with an OB who specializes in fertility issues.  Your numbers will mean something to them and they will want to address them quickly!

Good luck!

I'm so sorry you are so worried and it doesn't help that your current doctor isn't giving you much advice.  I agree with the above post to see an OBGYN that would be better able to interpret these results and give you some direction.  In the meantime, I've found this website to be helpful:

All the best to you!

there ya go.  i think this will clear it up.  you really need to hound your doc or find a new one because you probably won't conceive until this is cared for.
