IUD- Mirena discharge

IUD- Mirena discharge

I have had a Mirena IUD for 2 years. The past 2 months I have had frequent watery discharge.  I went to the doctor and he said that the IUD can give you all kinds of strange discharge.  Is anyone else having this problem?

Yes, I had to wear a liner everyday and it was just a pain in the neck.  The discharge would smell after intercourse and I asked the Dr. and she checked and made sure everything was ok and it was.  I had the mirena taken out after about a month and went with the 10 year becasue I had too many side effects hair loss, weight gain, depression, no sex drive.  Since I had it taken out I am back to normal and no discharge.

You are not alone. I just had mine removed last week because of the constant discharge and bacterial infections from my body trying to fight the Mirena off.

I just got mine on Dec. 7th. I just had a baby 2 months ago and am exclusively breastfeeding. I thought that breastfeeding was supposed to supress your cycle, but since I have the Mirena I got a period about a week ago. It was much heavier than my periods used to be, and today is day number 7 and the spotting is starting to get lighter. If i'm going to have heavy long periods like this, then I'm thinking about having it removed. Also I was informed that you could have light spotting in between your periods. That means spotting everyday and having to wear a liner everyday.

I have had mine since June 06, and I have been having all kinds of irregular discharge. I dont have cycles anymore but my breast swell at the time i should have them. I have had the same sexual partner and have had lots of visits to my pcp and ob/gyn to clear up the situation. They just kept checking me for std's and infections. I am fed up with this because it is very embarrassing!! Im having it removed ASAP...If im having all this nasty discharge, I dont need bc anyway because i cant or dont want to even have sex!!!

I'm having the same problem. Had mine for 2 years now and have the watery discharge on a regular basis. It is such a pain to deal with and has caused some issues between my husband and I. I generally produce too much discharge during sex and it has been a problem for both of us. I also seem to leak a lot when I'm working out. My OBGYN said it was normal and is a side effect, but I'm not sure it's worth it. I'm thinking I may go have it removed and go back on the pill.

I had the same thing happen for about the first 6 months. It is a pain to deal with, but it does eventually pass. The sex drive thing, kind of comes and goes. At least it has with me. But the spotting and cramping eventually did go away. Hope that helps!

Hi I was wondering about the comment you made about the increase in lubrication during sex and it causing problems with your husband. I am experiencing the same thing and was wondering if you still have your Mirena in??
Blank
Avatar_n_tn
Hello,
Yes, I still have my Mirena in. I had problems with too much lubrication during sex even before I had the Mirena put in. It has only gotten worse since I had it put in. I tend to have leaking problems when I work out, when I first wake up in the morning sometimes and when I start getting turned on, it gets really bad really fast. I'm thinking that removing the IUD will help. At least I hope so. It's getting pretty frustrating and although I enjoy skipping my periods, it's not worth the hassle of the leaking. I've heard many of the same stories from women who have had the same problem.

I am currently having the same problem with all the abnormal discharge. I had my IUD put in last October and cont. bleed for a month straight. Finally I got fed up with it and called my OB/GYN. He told me to take Naproxen 500mg BID for a month. Since my uterus was trying to reject or expell the IUD. It worked wonders but now I have this weird discharge but I have noticed that if I take the Naproxen 500mg BID on a regular basis it does help and sometimes even goes away. Maybe this will help some of you.

I have had my Mirena in for over 3 yrs and have found I have a smelly discharge, irregular periods, spotting all the time, stomach cramps and sweating. The most concerning issue for me is about 6 months ago I noticed  my nipples were extremely itchy, Onfurther checking I found that I had a green discharge from one nipple. After further testing I was advised it was just an infection of one of my ducts. my youngest is 9yrs old so one would think that nipple discharge would have been over and done with by now. I still have the discharge from my nipple and wonder whether this is one of the uncommon  side effect. I spoke to a girlfriend recently she's had her Mirena in for  a year or so and she has a green discharge from one nipple and a milky discharge from the other. Is the link we both have the Mirena IUD ? is there anyone else out there with a green nipple discharge & using a Mirena IUD ?

I am so glad that I am not alone!  My IUD is coming out as soon as possible after hearing all of your stories.  I have been having the discharge for about 4 months or so, thought it was a bacterial infection here and there, but now I am just tired of it!  It is definitely abnormal and just nasty!  Thanks to you all, I am getting mine out!!  It has been nice for a while, no period and all, but I would much rather have a period than this discharge any day!!!!

I thought I was alone on having this smelly discharge, your comments have bn very helpful!!!! I am going to try that medication that "ORNURSE" suggested and hopefully that will help my smelly discharge as well.. I havent had the weight gain or the green nipple discharge, but I have had occasional spotting and abdominal cramps; but I must say that the smelly discharge is by far my most annoying & shameful side effect of all.. Everyday when I get off of work my husband tells me that I smell like a bag of dicks & I get sick of hearing that, as if I cant smell myself.. As far as my sexdrive, it has slowed down DRASTICALLY, in fact it has damn near stopped!!!! But every once in a blue moon I feel the need for my husband to put it on me LMAO.... But thanks to you all for sharing your stories and letting me know that Im not alone....

i never had a problem with a odor but i did have a issue with mood swings, hair loss, weight gain and acne.  then once i hit about the 4 yr mark started spotting the brown discharge almost daily for what felt like forever.  it was causing so many issues that may 08 i finally had it taken out.  havent gone back to complete normal yet, still have a bit of hair loss and acne but not nearly as bad as before.  i am ttc now so it is nice that after 4 months off it, my cycles are FINALLY getting regulated.  i had a 39, 27,25 and then a 30 day cycle since Merina had been taken out.

i would NEVER recommend Merina to ANYONE.  if i have another baby i am gonna have them tie my tubes while they are in there...i am 35 and the next will be #4 so it will be time.

I've had Mirena in for a little over a month and a half.
I don't know what to think of it. I haven't stop spotting since it was put in and I've been wearing a pantyliner everyday. But its different, I have clumps of skin tissue on my liner. Has anyone had this same problem? I want to see my family doctor, but hes male and frankly I'm a little embarrassed about it. There no smell or pain associated with it but it concerns me.

vanessa i would swollow pride and go see a doc.  if you are not comfortable going to your family doctor look up a number for a female OB/GYN.  but get it checked out....the IUD could be messed up in there and causing damage that could cause trouble later.  best be embarrassed and safe a lifetime of trouble

My biggest fear has always been that if I could smell it this bad, can other pple do the same? Are we sure if Mirena can make u smell this bad, it doesnt wreak some serious havoc in our systems? cant take mine out though, oo scared to get pregnant again and I dont hav any discipline for pills. Is there sumthg to be done to improve the odor?

I have my second Merena, the first one was removed after 3 years as it "got lost" and I have to go to day surgery to have it removed and a new one put in. for me the merena totally changed things it solved many problems I had so there was no question about getting the second one, I haven't had a period at all for 5 years.

I have not experienced weight gain at all, just increase in breat size a small B to large C (not complaining) as a matter of fact I lost weight, had more energy and a higher sex drive - lucky me.

However I have now had this one for 3 years and I have been experiencing side effects, smelly watery discharge that is best discribed as rotten meat, bright red spotting and sometimes I feel like everything is swelling up even though its not, occasionally I feel like I have been kicked between the legs.

My thin prep pap smears are clear and I have had tests and nothing is ever found, I even had ultra sounds looking for something else but I have everything perfect, even then merena is where it should be.

I now have to wear a pad everyday as I never know when this is going to happen, I can smell it and I am sure I am not the only one, its embarressing, especially when that smell hits you when you stand up!

I thought perhaps it had stopped working properly so I have an appt with my gyno in two weeks. I will report back what he finds.

still not sure about the smell, i did a google search and found a couple of links for ya....here is one
http://curezone.com/forums/am.asp?i=1253436

and the other; this one is just a forum of women who have the merina and the problems they are having, i didnt read them all, but maybe there is someone who is having similar issues as you are
http://www.goodhousekeeping.co.uk/index.php/chatroom/printtopic/1278?theme=print

and it could just be your natural odor that some people think that the musky smell is a bad smell...idk, but if you are still concerned and your regular doctor is NOT then i would go for a 2nd opinion.

Thanks for the info, funny the racing heart, last year I was diagnosed with tachycardia after sufffering racing heart and a period of 2 months of blood pressure problems, which I no longer have, as we have a history of heart conditions in my family I didnt think there was a link and I certainly didnt tell my heart specialist I head a merena, I just never thought of it.

The smellis not musky or normal - never had that before, I think perhaps my Merena needs to be replaced.

I had the Mirena put in about 3 months ago since then I have had, a constant smell, always feeling as though I need to take a shower. Up until last week I was bleeding heavy, and sometimes pieces of tissue would come out. I have had one uterine infection. Now that I have stopped bleeding I have a nasty discharge and constant cramps. Sometimes the cramps have been so bad that I have to take narcotics which I hate. I have been losing hair as well. Then today I started to have nipple drainage brownish in color enough that it made my bra wet. The Mirena was the WORST decision I have ever made. I will am going to get it out I don't think that the Mirena should even be on the market, as I have heard nothing but bad things about it when talking to others now. I just wish I would have known this before getting it put in.

I have had the Mirena for about 4 years now. I have had a lot of problems with discharge and a few days before my period I spot a brownish colored dishcharge for a day or so.  It is embarrassing for me to have sex with my husband with the lights on because I never know what my underware is going to look like....I know GROSS!!!!! The ONLY good thing is that my periods are short BUT they are very heavy and my cramps are painful, I rarely cramped before the IUD.  As far as my sex drive hmmmm I'm not sure I have one anymore:( and when my husband and I do have sex I have a hard time climaxing, and I am tired of it.  I am going to have it taken out and get back on the pill.

Well I have had my Gyno check up and my Merina is good for another year, however I have a severe prolapse, I have always had a slight prolapse and retroverted but its never been a problem as I am fit and healthy and do my pelivic excercises religously.

Upon examination it was discovered that the prolapse is severe and there is a large mass to the left side, (I did have a small cyst on the left ovary on the last scan last year.). I am now going for a CA125 test and some scans.

The "fluid" is a result of the cervix being irritated due to the severity of the prolapse.

As it stands now my Merina has nothing to do with whats going on.

I will keep you posted.

Ok so I have a question. I have been having weird discharge on and off since I got mirena about 9 months ago. Well tonight I was sitting watching a movie and I felt like I pee'd my pants it just kept coming. I went to the bathroom and my underwear were soaked with milky, watery discharge. It was so bad that it leaked from my underwear through my pants and onto the couch. Has anyone ever had it that bad?
Blank
Avatar_n_tn
Hi
Yes I have  however mine is a result of the prolapse and that the cervix is irritated.

I am not saying that you have the same problem at all but it would be best to get that checked by a specialist as I was told it can also be a bacteria that can cause it which can be treated.

I was also told that sometimes the hormones are out of balance and it can be treated with the addition of a little estragen.

Good luck

PLEASE READ:
I had Mirena placed in December 07 and almost immediately I had this foul smelling discharge at random times. I went to the gyno and he swabbed and said everything is ok. Well the discharge continued and then I kept getting recurring bacterial vaginosis which I had to take several courses of anti-biotics. Then in July my period came and then never went away for a month. I had to remove the IUD thinking that it was just because of that. I went on other forms of birth control and things continued to get worse but my body was never like this before. The doctors never put things together thinking one had nothing to do with the other and now I have inflammed cysts on my ovaries and PID ( Pelvic Inflammatory Disease) and I do not have and STD, I have been with the same person and have been constantly swabbed for that. All of these problems are from the IUD and if you read about PID it tells you all about the foul discharge, painful cervix, lower abdominal pain, irregular periods, cysts ect....
ANYONE that is having the discharge talk to your doctor about PID because having an IUD is one of the main causes for it and it cause lead to infetility. The word needs to be out there so woman are not going through this thinking they have to live with this..make your doctor work for you and not tell you this is normal because its NOT.

Well I've had my 6 months now and I'm going in on the 17th of dec have it removed.  I've gained 18lbs.  I had a baby in may was doing great, now I'm 18lbs heavier.  I feel like i'm abut 3 months pregnant.  I just missed my first period.  But my husband says I smell below. Which at times I can smell I will take a shower and scrub.  I've noticed my pits smell, which I've never had a bo issue.  Sex my husband use to be the one with no sex drive.  I find him wanting it more then me.  During sex I find it hurts at times and he can feel it at times too.  I've never had zits, well I get them and I pinch nothing and they hurt like hec.  they stay on my fance about 3 weeks at a time.  It's not worth having!@  I will go back on the pill.  If I get pg I get pg.

I've had my Mirena in for about 3 months now.  I've experienced no cramping, my periods are already super light which is great and it's nice not to think about birth control.  HOWEVER(had to put that in caps), I cannot stand this smelly discharge!  It's embarrassing and has made sex a task.  It's made me lose confidence...i never feel like i'm clean enough to be with my boyfriend.  He's getting sick of me running to the bathroom to make sure i don't smell like ***.  And the smell after sex is ridiculous.  I also have less of a sex drive than I did before but I blame it on the odor and me not wanting to be intimate if i feel like i smell.  I'm going to give this thing 3 more months and if I don't see a change it's coming out.

I've had a paragard (copper) IUD for several years now.  In the past year, I started getting this clear watery discharge that you guys are talking about.  I really only get it during my period, especially if I put a tampon in.  I can't use tampons anymore, because I get so much discharge it goes right through my undies and pants!  Very embarrassing and scary.

Also: when I first got mine inserted, I would sometimes get a thick mucousy yellow-ish discharge.  My doc said it was normal.  But this past year I have been getting it more and more.  Now I get it almost every day.

I have also been having loose stools, a lot of gas and frequent heartburn for the past year.  I'm kind of a mess!  I've been to a lot of doctors.  They keep telling me the vaginal symptoms are separate from the rest but I just don't buy it.  It all started at once.  Plus, no one can tell me what's wrong.  As far as I can tell, I don't fit into any categories, and so the docs don't know what to say.  I'll tell you one thing for sure, though: every time they do a wet mount I have a high bacteria count on my cervix.

I'm going to make an appointment with a new doctor and see if I can't get some traction.  I'm due for my yearly pap anyway.  I think it might be time to take out the IUD and see if some of this stuff clears up.  I was willing to deal with the discharge when it was infrequent, but not every fricken day!  And if this gastrointestinal stuff is related, then I'm just not a good candidate for an IUD.

Hi - I've had my Mirena for 3.5 years now and was doing great until this past July when I got a horrible case of bacterial vaginosis, then a yeast infection from the antibiotics.  I haven't been the same since.  Every 2 weeks my vagina stings and sex is so painful it's completely out of the question - during this time I also have a lot of discharge than ranges from watery to a sticky mucus consistency.  I know, it's gross.

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing the vaginal pain that I describe?

I think I'm going to call and have this thing removed tomorrow!!

I have had this Mirina IUD in since december 08, and im begining to hate it, from the very begining ive had problems, first the insertion was so painful i actually had to take pain meds to help with the pain, i went on vacation a few days later, and by that time i had gotten worse, my sweet mother in law drove me down to mexico to get some meds to help with the infection, my medical wouldnt be covered were i was, anyways after taking the meds i felt even worse, i had the worst cramps, ive had two babies and these cramps i swear felt more like contractions, after a few days the pain started getting milder but then i started bleeding, then after about two weeks, i went to just spotting, then i got my normal period which i thought would only last the normal 5 days, i thought it would never end, then finally 8 days later it stopped. now i just had my second period and it only lasted 4 days, very very weird, my husband is scared im prego again just because my breast leaked this stuff out of one of the nipples and ive felt like **** the last week or so, and overall ive gained 20 pounds in two months this is not normal, i totally am seeing how my husband is thinking im prego again, please help, is anyone else having this same problem? ive so scared my ob says its normal, but im just not comfortable with this word and all this problems i might just get this thing out, i dont care the cost i just am not liking it at all.

oh goodness... where to start... first off, i also have the IUD... BUT BEFORE i had the IUD put in, i was on the Depo Provera... which is the shot form of birth control that lasts three months... i have had constant yeast and bacterial infections since i have been on the shot.  Now i am on the IUD, and they both use the same hormones.  this is just great (sarcastically speaking) to hear all of this about the IUD as well.  i was really hoping after MANY (too many to count) years of dealing with the constant infections that my problems are not going to go away.  I strongly do not recommend changing to the shot because i have had ALL of the same problems that all of you are having with the IUD.
I have only had my IUD for one month now, but i had a previous bacterial infection that i have not been able to clear up due to the medications being so freaggin nasty i gag them back up practically puking.  and on top of that the cream is over $60 and i just cannot afford that for one week of treatment... not knowing if it is actually going to get rid of it this time.

although since i was previously on the depo shot, i only bled for about 3 days after insertion, and have no spotting or bleeding.  (i did when i first got on the depo for about the first year)

i am just so tired of having discharge... i can use a yeast infection cream... and it gets rid of my discharge for literally one day after the last treatment day and then its back.

one doctor told me to go and see i specialist... and i asked her if she was going to pay for it... lol..... well i was thinkin it! lol........ i told her there was no way i could see a specialist... i left the doctors office, got in my car, and cried the rest of the way home.

actually, today a new thing came up... just the tips of my nipples are VERY tender to the touch, and they are very pointy... lol... weird but thats how it is... and my nipples are never like that.

the worst thing about all of this... is that the depo caused me all the problems everyone is having with the IUD, and now i'm on the IUD, so i am guessing it is not going to help with the discharge problem..

on top of that... there is no way i could ever be on the pill because i would forget like everyday!!!   plus, i was on the depo once before this last time for a year, and once my periods came back. a year after my last shot was due the previous year, my periods were soooo heavy and the cramping was soooo bad... before all the birthcontrol my periods were medium, with only light occasional cramping.  (and i traded that off for this ****)

i love not having a period, even though i had to wait a year before that happened, but if my problems do not go away with the iud i have no idea what i am going to do!!!  I might just have to go get some hormone therapy to see if that helps (with what money i have no idea)

if i knew that i was not going to have another child, i'd just go have it all taken out! no periods no cramping and best of all no discharge

oh i do recommend that if the discharge is milky white or milky green colored, to go get that checked by the doctor, it may be a bacterial infection...

sorry it was soooo long, but gosh i'm so disappointed to hear this from the IUD when i just went through three years of depo the same way. ...

OMG!!! I know we have all read the messages but I cant belive this &*#@ someone has created....  When I got the Mirena it was bc my husband wanted it so that we would not have to continue the risky rhythm method... but i have had all the same issues, constant watery discharge is a pain (if i forget a liner i have to change panties mid-day) and dont let me get turned on, i'll have to change pants!! acne (which I did not have before), spotting for days (which is so frustrating bc it smells like bad &*%$# on a hot day!) The sex drive comes and goes i believe it is mostly bc of the smell though.  I AM JUST TIRED! its been 1 YR and I want my body back!

I showed my husband this blog today and called my doc to make an appt for removal.  I hope that part goes easy. But right now I would give anything to not think the person next to me may be able to smell my goodies!!!

hi ladies,

Ive just recently had my mirena IUD taken oout 2 weeks ago after having it in for about 2 years, i never experienced discharge, only spotting at first and extreme period pain, but after a couple of months it was all good, my question is, when i had it removed my OB did a pap smear and it came out abnormal, she said it may be beacuse she did the pap before she removed it and it could have caused an infection. has anyone else had this issue? she did the pap again with a biopsy, so here i am waiting for results. Please feel free to email me at ***@****

WTF!!!! After reading all of the post I am really scared now... I just had my son in dec and had the IUD Mirena put in about a week and half ago.  The doctor told me I had to be on my cycle to have it inserted.  It was a painful process but the pain soon passed after the second day.  My cycle ended on a sunday feb. 22, but now I have had this brownish smelly discharge as everyone else.. Before I had my first child i had my cervics frozen in 2002 due to constantly having BVs. So my question is will this symptom pass or will i have to have it removed.  I decided on the IUD because I am awful with taking pills and this would be less expensive in the long run. I go back to the doctor in one month but really dont want to wait that long...

Afetr reading all of this I am soooo glad!  I have had my IUD in for 3 and a half years.  At first I was having contraction like pain in my lower back.  I thought it was my hormones trying to get back to normal.  Then, I started to have horrible periods.

In just the past 6 months I have had abnormal discharge, color was yellow, and a horrible smell.  I do get the urge to take several showers a day.

My sex drive is non existant, however I am practicing abstinence.  Hope I spelled that right.  Even so, I always have a horrible feeling that any one I walk by can smell me..  This S#&t sux!!

I am going to remove it as soon as I can!!

I also forgot to mention that I am having an uncomfortable pain downstairs and I don't even like to wear tampons.  When I do, it feels like they are slipping out!  It almost feels like I am all inflammed.

I am going to go back to my OB and see what he thinks.  His wife has an IUD and I'm sure he wont try to give the run around... God I hope not!!!

I went to the ER this morning and the doc said that my IUD was slipping out of place and I needed to get it removed immediately!  Ladies I am very nervous that if my OB can't take it out normally he will have to go in surgically!  This IUD has made me very confident that I will not get pregnant, however, I have had nothing but trouble for the past year.  I will keep in touch with you all and let you know the verdict.  Wish me luck!!!

I feel like this IUD has ruined my life! First of all I have had the Mirena for almost two years and have gained close to 40 lbs. I am eating regular and exercising, and the weight won't come off. I have had a brown, smelly discharge that antibiotics can't cure. It is worse after intercourse. I don't want any more children right now, but I am seriously thinking about getting it removed.

I've had my iud since september 06 after my second child was born...and about 6 months after I got it I started having discharge..I have to wear a pantyliner everyday, but it doesn't have an odor..but it's so aggravating..i mean i bath 2 -3 times a day..and about 2 months after i got it i was in the shower and noticed i had milk coming from one of my breast..and at this time second child was around 4 months old and I did not breastfeed him..I thought i was preg again..!! (but i wasn't) and alot of the time my pelvic area feels really sore... and I also can't keep wait off..I eat normally and gain 15 lbs then i can lose it by starving and upping my exercise..but as soon as i go back to eating normally it comes right back...and I don't overdo it, honestly...so this past july i made an app with my ob/gyn from all of these things i was experiencing..he did the test no std..duh..but I did have a uterine infection which was linked to the iud, he said bacteria gets caught around it..i took my antibiotics and it cleared up..said my leaking nipples was due to me being 22 yrs old that my body was ready for another child and i was in my prime child bearing time..so.i still have my iud, i don't wanna get it taken out because i got preg with my lil girl on the pill ..and when my lil girl was 3 months old i got preg with my son on the patch...so i haven't gotten preg in almost 3 years...so we know it is truly great birth control...but the pain in my pelvis and this discharge really bother me..i just wanted to share my story and i saw where someone had written about pid..would my pain be associated with that?

I just got my IUD out on thursday. I've been getting the liquidity discharge as well. Mine fills a pantyliner. Is that normal? How long does it last? I got bacterial vaginosis as well.

I have just read everyone's symptoms, and include me, too.  I've had mine for 4 years.
Spotty periods
Brown discharge (finally went away)
Cramping on one side severe
Back pain (never had this even with my horrible menstrual cramps)
Yuck smell after intercourse
Weight gain
Acne and especially BACK acne.
Painful nipples with the creamy discharge on one side, green on the other.

I got this thing so that it would control my periods because they are so heavy, but that's 4 days a week vs ALL THE DANG TIME with this thing.

I'm sending my husband in for a snip, and I'm having this thing removed immediately.  Thanks, and good luck to everyone out there with similar issues.

I'm so glad I'm not alone, I so thought I was!  This is my 2nd IUD.  I had no problems w/ the first, but this time different story.  Discharge, not smelly.. but thick and almost daily.. Totally kills the sex drive. So like the last post, I made my husband a vasectomy appointment and will be getting my IUD out next month.  I hope that the discharge is eliminated and the energy level goes up!!!

I am fnally starting to notice the horrid smelling discharge and vaginal smell.  I have had my mirena for about 3 years now and had never had any problems with it before.  I usually had a discharge with it but nothing this horrid smelling.  After reading your comments, I have decided to have it taken out and to be tested for infections since this may be causing the odor.

I actually was able to have my IUD removed today much sooner than expected and my Dr. told me the discharge was most likely bacterial as the IUD is a foreign and my body was now having an adverse reaction to it.  He took a sample to culture and I'm waiting for the results, I am hopeful, as he told me my sex drive may increase slightly now that I've had it removed.  I'm so grateful for all the previous posts as it encouraged me that I wasn't alone and gave me the guts to do something about it.

I am going to have Mirena installed tomorrow.  I've been on the pill for 17yrs. I'm 37 I have a 17yr old and a 4 month old.  I smoke, and I've had the gut feeling as of late that I need to give the pill a rest.  As effective as the pill is, I've noticed over the years that: Sex drive is nill, acne is pretty much cyclic according to the pill pack, and I'm dry all the time. By researching all the crazy side effects, It sounds like the hormone in Mirena mimics the early stages of pregnancy/pregnancy hormones continuously.  I am counting on this fact, as my pregnancies were mild & pleasant with no sickness, no zits, and a sex drive like an animal! As for the discharge and odor.  As previously stated, I'm dry as a bone.  However, I do get yeast infections like clockwork as soon as I take antibiotics!  So, I have found that taking chewable acidophilus daily keeps my flora in check whether I have a yeast infection or not. If you try this for the discharge/odor situation, I have a feeling that if may help!

I just found this site today, I am glad I found it.  I have had a Mirena IUD for about 3 months because of extremely heavy bleeding.  Although the bleeding has almost stopped completely, I have had a discharge since the IUD was put in.  I have been treated by my GYN for Bacterical Vaginosis and a Yeast Infection.  I have also taken over the counter meds for a Yeast Infection twice.  I went to the GYN today for the 3rd time since the IUD was put in, and he was so rude saying that it is highly unlikely that the discharge is from the IUD.  He said I should have my husband go to a Urologist and said he probably had something wrong with him that was causing the problems.  He actually made me feel like I was stupid for even considering that the problem was caused by the IUD.  I think I will switch doctors and get this thing out.

I have had the IUD for about a year and a half. I had brown spotting for the first 11 months. That has stopped and I get a light spotting every other month. I have the excessive discharge and have seen my ob/gyn and my family doctor. They both said that it is not an infection and is due to the mirena. My ob said that my uterus has kinda flipped a little and that is causing the discharge to be excessive. He wants to go in and touch freeze the uterus to make it flip back in and he said that should help with the discharge. Will keep you updated on how it works for me...

I have had the smelly discharge after sex for 5 years now.  It only started almost immediately after having the Mirena IUD put in 5 years ago.  I have been told it was bacterial vaginitis, PH Balance, ect.  I got the IUD removed.  This solved some of the discharge problems but not the smell after sex.   This is very frustrating and embarrassing.  Why were we not warned of these obviously COMMON symptoms.  Not to mention, I told my doctor I did not want anything that would cause me to gain weight, or even the possibility of it...and gained almost 40 lbs in that 5 years.   FInally I got the IUD out and got my tubes tied.  It has not solved the smell issue though.  I want to hear from someone that has found a permanent solution to the smell.  Alll the treatments I have heard for this were very temporary.  I mean I don't want to have to use all this cream, douche, vinegar, yogurt **** every time I have sex!!!  Please please help!

I had the IUD put in on January 14, 2009 and at first everything was ok.However,  in the past couple months I started having a really bad smell down there. I was so embarressed and didn't even want to have sex with my fiancee. So many thoughts went through my head from is he cheating to do I have B.V. I started drinking tons of water and the smell went down but there is still a weird smell. I wipe myself very well and use soap and water 2 times a day to make sure sweat doesnt build up. I am so embarressed to even open my legs in fear that people might smell. I have also never stopped spotting since I had it places in and after sex its like I have my period all over again. It gets expensive buying liners and pads. I also had pimples on my back and some on my face which I NEVER had before. This last month when my period (normal time) came I had the worst mood swings ever. I went from being so depressed to being super happy. I have always been a little cranky around my period bc I feel like **** but never remotely like this. I searched online for what might cause this problem and I finally ran into this group. I can't express my relief, I thought I was alone. About 5 minutes ago I called my GYN and made an appointment to get it out. It is scheduled for september 18th! I can't wait. I also asked the person on the phone about my problems and she also had the Mirena and said she had the SAME problems, this made me also feel better! Thank you so much

I'm so glad I'm not the only one.  I've had mine in since August 13th and I can't take it anymore.  I have that brown discharge everyone has been talking about and it comes out in clumps.  Then I'm constantly spotting, but not just in small amounts.  It's like one day I have a little spotting and the next a whole bunch of blood.  I don't even know if it's my period or not.  I just got married August 7th and have barely even been able to have sex with my husband b/c of this thing.  I'm so embarrassed of the odor.  It's a strong sour smell.  I bathe every morning and night b/c I just can't stand the smell.  He doesn't know anything about the odor yet b/c I hide it and just tell him that I can't have sex b/c I'm still bleeding.  He's very concerned about me and that I don't wanna have sex with him.  That's not it, it's just the smell.  I'm supposed to be going to my doc this week, and I'm gonna lay it on him.  I hate this thing, but I really don't want to get pregnant right now.  I just want it out.  I'd rather risk getting pregnant than have zero sex drive and a bad smell coming out of me.  Oh, and even after I bathe, within 10 to 20 minutes the odor comes back.  I definately think it's the mirena.  There's NO other explanation for this.

I'm not quite sure when I had the IUD inserted, but its been almost a year.  I've had the same problems as all of you.  OMGSH am i glad that i'm not the only one.  My GYN and his nurse also made me feel like I was stupid for even considering that my discharge had anything to do with the IUD.  I am soooo going to find me a new GYN asap and taking this thing OUT!  Ever since i've had the IUD my sex drive has gone down, my hair falls out like CRZY and i have hair in other places that i didnt before, smelly discharge ALL DAY...I wash myself atleast 2-3x a day and that doesnt work, I have to wear a pantiliner EVERY SINGLE DAY and its so embarrassing cause my husband sees it.  Its funny cause i always try to sneak and take it off right before we get intimate, but that kinda kills the mood for me.

For those of you that have already taken the IUD out...What method have you turned to?  There are so many pills out there that i dont know which one to choose.  I dont want to use NUVA ring cause I've heard bad things and I wouldnt feel completly safe with the patch....how does that even work? Lastly, my friends mom said she was on the shot with all 3 of her pregnancies, so that kinds freaks me out.

I really appreciate all the input! =>

i have 2 kids and now after the removal of my IUD, which was in april 2009, and still not pregnant. my husband and i are starting to become very frustrated. i have had 3 periods since and i have A LOT of side effects/symptoms that are almost the same as when i was pregnant. i have spent a lot of money on hpts but now i dont wanna rely on them. some pregnancies may not appear on hpts thats why i go and get a blood test done. your HCG levels are more accurate!! so, does anyone have any advise that would possibily increase my chances in becoming pregnant??

I have had the Mirena for the full 5 years. The watery dischange just started a few months ago, before that I had difficulty producing lubrication during sex. My hubby loves the extra lubrication..wish I didn't have to get mine removed..but we are also hoping to get pregnant. I do plan on using Mirena after we have a baby ad the side effects are minimal and I loved not having my period!

WOW!! I am going through the exact same thing. I've had mine in for 2 years now and from the start I have had issues with smelly discharge, bacterial infections, irregular bleeding. I bleed every time we have sex no matter what day, time, or how hard it is. It's extremely frustrating and very embarrassing, but my fiance understands. We've been together years before it was inserted so he knows that all of this is NOT ME! The comment about the discharge smelling like rotten meat is so correct. It doesn't smell like that everyday, I think it really starts right around the time that I would have my normal period because my breasts get really sore during that time as well. I usually take three showers a day during that time...the smell makes me feel disgusting. Other than that I literally wear tampons EVERYDAY except for about three days a month when the discharge subsides. I just called my doctor to have this taken out this month. We are getting married this summer and we want to conceive right away --honeymoon night if everything works out for us! After reading the other posts it seems that fertility after removal is an issue.

Hello Ladie's.... I have had my IUD almost a year now. I have the occasional discharge, probabely about a week of discharge every month. The discharge seem's to be replacing my period's. I smell some time's too, I just thought it was from the weight gain. My boyfriend and I get into fight's all the time because I don't wanna have sex. I thought something was wrong with me. I want this thing out of me!! I don't know what other type of birth control to use. Anyone have any idea's of something good to try? I have tried Depo shot, Pill's, and the Patch. My friend had Nuva ring, and said it was disgusting with all that discharge. I already have that problem.

I as well have had this weird discharge from my IUD. I dont have any of the other syptoms (symptoms) really. It was painful for about 3 days after being put in. I have never had a kid so my doctor said it just hurts because my cervix is closed and not used ot having the IUD inside. My sex drive has not decreased but instead increased dramatically... I have never felt this sexual before. I did have some problems with my nipples hurting really bad though. I do have this thick discharge everyone is talking about as well.. it just started up about a month ago and Ive had my IUD for almost a year. I dont like this discharge its thickand gooey an kind of like the white part of an egg. When I have sex it gets worse and is embarassing... this sounds gross but it leaves almost a small puddle. Its embarassing and kind of annoying. Im thinking about calling my Gyno tomorrow to see if I can do something to make this stop. Let me know if you find any thing that helps make this cease. Hope this was helpful.

I have had the IUD now for 13months, I am over all of these complications. It started off with discharge...then I got 3 bactiria infections, then I have the smelly dicharge that makes me uncomfortable, also pain during intercourse, kidney pains, no periods some months, depressed, moody, tired all the time, So I went to see a PCP about all this the hormones in the MIERNA threw my thyroid off wack, it madw me hypothyriodism, but I am loosing the weight instead of gaining, come to find out I cannot take in type of birth control. But I hate the IUD. Nothing but bad for me. I thought I was the only one...Thanks for posting

i got my mirena about 6 months ago because i have endometriosis and my sex drive has not changed but i have noticed that everytime i have sex there is a weird smell and a bloodish colored discharge. i have been told its blood from my lining since the IUD makes your lining very thin so that eggs can not settle there. Im very self conscious about the smell. even though i know no one else can smell it it makes me nervous. my options are keep the IUD in or have surgery. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Im relieved somewhat to read all this, but horrified at the same time...is there such a thing as contraception without all the trouble!!?? My problems have been weight gain, headaches, mood swings (ie extreme anger/aggitation/feel like my heart is gonna jump out) = note Im usually very even tempered and lovely...lol...but the worst thing is this yellow jelly type discharge that comes and goes, its absolutely gross and the thought of having sex makes me cringe, which is very upsetting cause I usually love sex. My vulva and labia feel swollen and tender when this discharge comes, and Im bloated like Im preggas. In fact the bleeding and pain too makes me think Im getting pregnant and miscarrying often...is that possible???? I need another alternative before I can remove, as I would need to abort rather than go through another pregnancy (40 with 3 kids..enuf!!) has anyone else had that type of discharge? Does anyone else feel preggas and like they are miscarrying?? Is this possible?? (Note I fall preggas very easily - been preggas on pill, and first try last 2 times also)

here is my mirena story....
i had mine put in october 23...bled constantly until dec 24..spotty ever since, i have stinky yellow/brown discharge when i am not bleeding.  my vagina hurts/burns and now itches, i am bloated, my pants are tight cause i gained weight...i constantly have menstrual type cramps or pains similar to labor pains...i broke out like a 15 year old...i have no sex drive which is good cause i smell down there and would be embarressed to have anyone near it anyways;)
i have to wear a pad every day cause i dont know what to expect from day to day....i am crabby crabby moody moody angry angry and oh so tired, btw does this headache ever go away?????!!!!
I saw the doc and he said, oh thats normal...but the only problem is i got it put in so i could have sex without the risk of another child, but the whole no sexual appetite, plus the bleeding and discharge makes it unrealistic to have sex anyways.....
is it really worth all this?  i cant take pill (got pregnant on it before)....suggestions?  i am 34 with 3 kids ages 10, 11, 12....no more babies!!!

I had my Mirena put in Dec 10th. Let me tell you it HURT LIKE HELL... anyway I have been great... had a regular period in Jan 2010... only had a period for one day Feb, BUT I started breaking out all over... my chest, back, face... I feel like I am going through puberty again...

I just started getting this weird odorless discharge... and light cramping... similar to how it feels when you first get preggers... I freaked.. but learned that almost everyone who gets Mirena knows that your body will think that you are pregnant.

I haven't noticed a change in my diet... I feel like I eat less if anything.. but my weight has stayed the same.

I have definately noticed since I have had it put in, I am more depressed, I constantly think about suicide... not in the way where I think that I would do it.. but it's scary how I can start to think about something, then start to obsess and get anxious about it. Over little things too, like going out to a friends house.

I am going in tomorrow to have it checked... just to be on the safe side... however I too think I am ready to switch my birth control....

Mirena is great because you can have wild free sex, and even though my man can feel it in certain positions almost everytime we have sex, atleast I know it's still there, and atleast he knows I have my kitty barbed wired up so don't hit it too hard!!

Anyway good luck everyone... is there anyone who has had it that actually overall loves it without conditions..

My Pros:
-Great sex (to a certain extent)
-No period (or SUPER light)

My Cons:
-Cramping
-Acne (like whoa! and I have never had problems with acne)
-Watery Discharge (no odor, but still irritating, I keep thinking I am going to start my period at any moment)
-Mood Swings (mad crazy mood swings)

Yea, I think I am going to get it out.

Good luck ladies!!

I have had mirena since September of 2009. Although I have never had foul smelling discharge, I have recently noticed increase in hair growth. Especially on my legs and stomach. This is so weird. I never had to shave as much as I do now... just wondering if this is normal or if anyone else has experienced this?? Thanks a lot!

I have had my Mirena for almost 2 years now.  Before I got it, my periods were unbearable! long, and painful and very, very heavy,  I worked at a hospital and I had to take bedside overnight shifts sitting beside a patient in a chair, because it would just pour out of me, tampons were worthless, I was using maternity pads.  AFTER the Mirena, my periods became NORMAL, light, only slight cramping, and I could go back to super tampons, and continue my normal work.
The only major complaint I have about the Mirena is that its almost 2 years and I STILL have a period... and for about a week after my period theres a brownish (old blood) discharge.  (its good thing my husband is NOT giving in the oral sex dept) that would have really screwed up my life.
Other than that, I think this thing has SAVED our sex life, because I got pregnant on the pill, and condoms...ugh, killed our mood completely.

I am so sorry alot of you are having a problem.  I think its the best things thats ever happened to us !  I just wish my damn period would GO AWAY like its supposed to!

I've had my mirena for 4 years and have experienced the disgusting vaginal discharge, headaches, dizziness that resulted in the entire left side of my body going numb, loss of spacial reasoning and reality sometimes. I hate not wanting to have sex with my husband because of the odor the discharge produces. I have only been with one person since insertion and I was very worried that he may have cheated and brought something home to me. I have a sex drive and I do not suffer weight gain in fact I weigh less now than before I had my son. I think I am going to have it removed because I have been having symptoms of PID and I am scared to death that there is something terrible on the horizon for me if I don't. I am so glad that I found this!

I've had my mirena for about 2 months, and I have been having cramps and lower back pain.  I also had a brown discharge that smelled kind of funny.  Recently the discharge has become heavier, like a bad period and I have to even wear pads because Its too much for a panty liner now.  The cramps have lightened ALOT, and I dont realy feel them anymore.  But the discharge is a smell I can't stand, and I feel that if I can smell it, so can someone else. I've been getting a little acne, but  nothing that Proactive cant cure, but Im just worried about when this is going to stop.

I had my Mirena put in after my second son was born around 10 weeks after. At first it was great, little bit of spotting but I had been told about that by my OB. She is great but basically said this was the way to go for birth control... I trusted her and while an intelligent person would understand there are risks (I consider myself in this category), why the hell I didn't do some online research and find these sites, I don't know.
So now 7 months later, I have been having watery, yellowish discharge for months now. It's getting worse and every day I use at least 4-5 pantyliners. When I get up in the morning and go to the washroom, there is so much that is flushed from my system it's as if I have used Monostat or something and its been waiting to come out. There is also irritation which makes me want to itch so desperately. When I finally give in to it, it feels too good, and frankly, my sex drive has increased. While my husband says he can't detect a foul smell, I can slightly and I am definately adverse to having more fun than simply intercourse. The irritation is ridiculous and the continual wetness. I just put two and two together yesterday. I will make an appointment to see about getting this thing taken out. Damned expensive too!!!

Disappointed

Hey i just finished reading all of your comments and I am in total shock but at the same time happy cause I thought just like all of you that I was alone. I have had mirena for a 1 and 5 months and just recently been getting the brown discharge and now getting this watery foul discharge. Far as sex I bleed right after and noticed that i get the pain while having sex. this is crazy If I would have know all of this I would have never got this put in I had no problem with my period at all I just cant swallow pills like talking bout it. This is just too much I dont want to have sex and even thought he was cheating on me. I dont think i am going to keep this in I read thst some of you have had this in for 5 are more years and still have these problems I rather just have my 3 day period and just leave it be. I never had a yeast infection my whole life and it seems like ever since this was put in I have been getting them alot. I went to my ob about this and was told that the brown discharge and the yeast infections was normal but nothing should be normal expecially this. Again I am so glad I found this site cause I was getting so scared I thought something was really wrong with me. Far as the medication that was mentioned in the previous messages did any one find out if it helped with the discharge. If not I will ask my doctor when I go back to keep yall informed

I have had this Mirena in since May 22, 2010 and at first it was fine until i was getting massive migraine and cold. I also get lower back ache and mood swings. I really the mirena convenience since my husband is very stubborn and would not use condom and which lead to arguments at times. That the reason why i decided to try mirena because I do not want any unwanted pregnancy. Lately I have been getting spotting and yellowish to browninsh discharge and it is very IRRITATING. I can so feel the string at times like it going to come out. I really want to know if the migraine is normal because i constantly get it. Im thinking of taking off the mirena because I cannot deal with the migraine and the Mood swing plus acne that comes along with it. I have also got my period twice since I have been on mirena and i know they said no period but i still get with serious cramping. Does anyone feel like tingling pain on their nipple cause i also experience that. I really dont understand my body at this point anymore. Any suggestions pls and advice is welcome. Thanks Ladies.

First I have to say that i am super glad i have found this site!

I have had mirena for 2 years now and I'll admit at first it was great. the doctor told me there would be a bit of an abnormal period and she was right after that no problems......BUT NOW it seem like about a year after having it insersted I started having alot of  problems. My back hurts all the time, like unbearable pain. I am having issues with discharge... as well as frequent yeast and bacterial infections....she told me that a small amount of discharge is normal but it is large amounts everyday. Like i feel like i have had an "accident" in my pants :(.i am having a hard time losing weight in fact i have gained about 30 pounds when i faithfully work out everyday. She assured me that the low doses of progesterone were local and would not cause the weight gain that other Birth contorol would cause.

I thought I was alone with these problems because my doctor told me that none of her other patients have had any problems with the IUD.  Oh I forgot I am exhasted and just tired ALL the time. I'm 20 I shouldnt be this tired :( I am scheduling an appointment and getting it out no matter what protests my doctor brings up. This biirth control is not worht the pain anymore not to mention I am so worried that these side effects could effect me having more chidren in the future.

I had the Mirena put in Feb-2009 after my third kid and at first it seem to be o.k but a few months down the road I noticed that I stayed with either a yeast infection or
B.V. I tried all types of anti-biotics and yeast medicines just for the problem to go away for a week or two and then come right back. I stayed with watery discharge that was just extremely heavy and unpleasant feeling sex became uncomfortable at times my lower abdomen became really sore and tender so I went to the doctor about a little year after having it. they did an ultra-sound on me and suspected P.I.D which is one of the very rare side affects of having the mirena. I'm getting it removed on my next Dr.Appt. and hope that it hasn't caused anything more serious...I'm hoping all these problems will just go away and my body will return to normal, It's just been a major burden but am very happy to know that other people can relate. I thought I was the only one for the longest time having a bad experience with this form of birth control.

After 3 months of the I U D i am so annoyed. Its birth control because you can never have sex unless you want to have it while bleeding.

I got the IUD because my husband and I had a pregnancy scare. All other types of BC didnt worked cause me serious issues and this is the last resort before we decide to give my hubby the snip (which i dont want to do as i would like more kids down the track)

My symtoms (symptoms):

1. Bleeding 90ish day I have been bleeding for about 60 in total. Some days are so heavy that I use a tampon up in 1 hour or less. I am frustrated that I am messing my pants up I have no idea when my period is becasue it seems to always be here!

2. Because of this Severe blood loss I am now getting my iron levels checked for anemia! I am so tired and low in energy and feel slightly dizzy when i have large bouts of blood loss.

3. Clots are more frequent and are huge... I have had a miscarrage (miscarriage) and I had wondered a couple of times if that was in fact what was happening.

4. I had a large pain one day and a clot that came down and it was hard like grissle or a bone you would find in fish.. i thought I had lost the IUD but it was what i assumed was body tissue. Nothing I had ever experienced before.

5. Sex drive ...is over the moon. I am really in the mood all the time (much different than i was before) which makes me want to keep it in but it does me no good to bleed all the time.

6. Head aches are more frequent on first day of Big bleed (every other day practically)

7. Put on a couple of kilos but lost them after a few weeks :)

8. Latest is that one nipple is leaking white/yellow fluid that is kinda sticky ...not every day

I dont know what to do the bleeding is gross and my kids now know the drill to get me fresh undies if i call out from the bathroom. I have spent so much money on pads and tampons in the past weeks... grrrr...

Glad I found this site!

I got my Mirena April 9th and can't wait to get it out.  I had quite a scare yesterday as I noticed a brown discharge out of one of my nipples.  Having lost my sister n'law to breast cancer it really spooked me.  I went on the Mirena official site where it mentioned breast cancer, which scared me even more.  Thank heaven I found this site and read how so many other women have also had the same discharge, either brown or green.  I have had a lot of the same symptons spoke of.  Spotting the same brown discharge that most of you spoke about.  Fortunately I haven't had the odor that seems to go along with it.  I also gained weight and have been struggling to get it off. I've been getting headaches (which I never get).  I definitely feel pregnant and bloated since I've had it.  In fact, I've taken 2 pregnancy tests.  My sex drive is diminishing and the moistness is not what it was, however, I do have episodes where it's like my water broke where all of a sudden it's like "what the blank".  My breasts have grown a full cup size and have been sore since I got the Mirena.  Then yesterday I got the discharge out of one.  My mammogram appointment is in an hour.  My doctor's appt is next week for removal.  I strongly advise anybody considering this type of birth control to rethink their options.  I do thank you ladies for your input because my doctor's nurse told me she's never heard of any of these symptons from the Mirena.

I have only had my Mirena IUD in for about 3.5 weeks now.  I'm not sure how I feel about it, or even if it really matters....as I might be heading down a road that is going to lead to a hysterectomy...Abnormal pap...  Not Mirena related.
I had the Mirena put in due to extremely heavy periods that led to me becoming extremely anemic.  My period this time was MUCH lighter.  I spotted a couple days longer than normal, but I still didn't need to use much more than a regular tampon on the heaviest day.
Now, that my period is over, I am having that brownish/yellowish discharge now.  I don't think it has a bad odor, but I'm just not sure if it's normal.
I would call the GYN for an appointment, but I already have an appointment scheduled Tues to have the strings trimmed...and to have further tests run due to an abnormal pap test.
I figure that they will be able to tell me if I have gotten some kind of infection when I see them on Tues.

I am so glad you guys have all posted about the symptoms.

I have had irregular (read, 2 weeks long +) periods for the past year and a half. I have gained so much weight it's not even funny... acne is through the roof, and my mood swings have been terrible. On top of all that, a few months ago I noticed I was getting a foul greenish thick discharge... I am convinced it's this stupid IUD as I've had my thyroid tested already (due to the issues prior to the discharge) and it was normal.

As soon as I have the money this stupid thing is coming out. I am so fed up with it.

I had my Mirena in from 05 till July of this month.  I took that one out and got another one. I thought I was in this thing alone. I loved the Mirena and was perfectly fine with it and did not have any problems until around 08 after that things went balistic! I was at the Dr repeatedly for infection and bacteria issues. I also did not even want to have sex afraid my partner would smell me. Since I have gotten the new one however I do not hav the problems. I believe my body just started to reject it after so long. So the plan this time is to take it out after 2 or 3 years.

I have read all of your comments and feel so bad that this company could actual produce this thing! Why is it not off the market?  I'm mad at my OB/Gyn now...She thought it would be a life saver for me.  I've had severe endometriosis and very heavy periods all my life.  I am 41 years old and in perimenopause.  I cannot take estrogen because of a lung embolism scare a few years back.  My husband and I had been happily using condoms for 10 years without a problem.  Before I had the Mirena inserted, almost 2 months ago, I did have a discharge with a smell, but nowhere near as bad as this one now!  I think the problems everyone is experiencing comes from the progesterone.  I was having my discharge beforehand due to the decrease of estrogen in perimenopause.  Also, I had this same kind of wet discharge while pregnant, which I was very glad to say goodbye to.  Little did I know, it would return with a vengeance!  I thought I got my period last week because I kept having this rushing feeling.  It was a thin, milky discharge with a slight tan tinge.  It's been going on for a week now and I am tired of wearing a tampon and a mini-pad all the time.  Not to mention my avoidance of sex because I don't want to go without a tampon because of the smell.  Sex has been messy.  We have been putting towels down because I am tired of changing my sheets and trying to bleach out the stains.  I am not sure how long I will put up with this, but...

On a good note, I have more energy than I've had in years, no period this month so far, no weight gain (in fact I feel lighter and not bloated for a change!), my sex drive is less but it feels good to not be horny ALL the time, and in general its nice to be spontaneous for once and not to worry about condoms.  I just wish the discharge would go away already!  I think I'll see if the Naproxen will change things...

One thing I would be interested in seeing is the age of all the people with the smelly discharge?  Are you at leas tin your late thirties or is this an across the board problem?

Thanks eveyrone for your input.  I'm definitely discussing this with my doctor!!

I got my Mirena about 2 years ago after I had my daughter.  I've loved it other than a slight weight gain.  A few months ago I started having the discharge that a lot of you have mentioned above.  After readings everyone's comments I just KNEW it had to be because of the Mirena.  When I went to the doctor and told her about this she said the Mirena people tell her that the Mirena doesn't cause any type of discharge.  She did a test for a bacterial infection and I had one.  She gave me medicine for it and I was better after the first day.  So make sure you ask your doctors and tell them everything!  The more they know the more they can help you.  I was embarrassed to speak about it with her but it helped me out a ton in the end.  If you think about it, I'm sure they've heard of a lot of things the same or worse than this.

Hello Everyone, I previously shared my experience on July 2010 about Mirena. Well it happened to be that My doctor called me in sometime in August dues to the fact from the ultrasound result, which i did when i first put mirena in place. I decided to take it out that same time on August 18,2010 and once u take Mirena off u have to use something for backup to prevent unwanted pregnancy. It took a while for my body to get back to normal and the migraine to go. My doctor put me on CYCLEN 28 right away after the removal. I took and I was sick throwing up, diarrhea, thought i was pregnant but it was the pill. I could not take the pain any longer so now am looking at different alternatives and in the mean while I used Condom. And for anyone that thinks u have to pay to have it remove, i think it depends where u stay. In Toronto we don't pay for health care as long u have ur health coverage. hope this help. Be safe. (Peace)

As mentioned many times in this site, I am thrilled to have found it!! I chose the Mirena because my doc recommended it due to my age (38). I have never had children and am not sure if I want to. I expected the erratic bleeding for a few months, and I warned my boyfriend. Luckily his "little guy doesn't mind going to war" so it has not interrupted our sex life. What has interrupted our sex life is the smelly discharge and the disgusting smell after sex. I am so disgusted by this, and embarrassed, and it has become a problem. Although he is still willing to perform intercourse, he misses some of the other things we used to do (I think you know what I am talking about) because I won't let him go "there" due to the smell. My sex drive has not decreased at all, I have not gained weight, but I am always nervous now about having sex because I don't know what might happen during or after. On the rare time that nothing does, I actually cheer.

I have an appointment with my gyno next week and am going to discuss having this removed. If I knew that in a couple of months it would go away, I would keep it because I love not having to worry about birth control and light if any, periods.

Does anyone know of any other birth control measures for an old cougar like me?? LOL!

I just had my 3rd Mirena inserted 10 days ago.  My first was for the full 5 years; the second for 3 years because we were considering having kids; and now this one.
I don't remember having any issues with the first 2 but now, for 10 days, I've had a brown watery discharge.  I've been trying to convince myself that it's the tail-end of my period, gone a bit awry because of the Mirena.  But after reading a lot of the above comments, I'm more than a little concerned.
As someone said, if I knew the Mirena was just 'settling in' and this would end in a month, then I'd be ok with living with it, but I see many people have lived with this for years!
I'll be called my Gynae tomorrow.

Hi Shwarzie,

I'm in your age group (37) and one of the other contraceptions that my Gynae suggested to me that I found quite appealing is the 'pill patch'...along the same lines as using a smoker's nicotene patch, you wear it somewhere on your body and change it once a week.

That may be my next step.

i have had my mirena now since july 2010...it is now october 2010 and my body is having terrible side effects. i have had the spotting and smelly discharge from day 1...i have been given antibiotics for vaginal infections but that only fixes the problem while im on the antibiotic. as soon as the antibiotic is finished the discharge comes right back...i have 2 showers daily but as soon as i begin an activity i feel the discharge starting to build up again...in addition to the discharge i have the worst mood swings ever..i really thought the mood swings could have caused a serious problem...i am 24 and have tried other b.c but mirena is the only 1 to give such bad side effects...after reading all of these horrible stories of side effects that probable wont go away i've made an appoinment to get my mirena removed.

Please help!

I had Mirena put in 20/8/2010 while undergoing treatment for endometriosis.

It's been agony, I can feel it in me when I move around. I can feel it after sex, I just hurt. When I first had it put in, I had contractions where I fell to my knees and lay on the ground making involuntary noises of pain. I thought it was just pain from the operation. Also I felt like something was stuck, serious agony.

Anyway, it went away. The spotting continued until about last month. I also noticed lumps of tissue like some of you have mentioned.

Last week I caught a horrific cold, the fever I had was insane, I actually felt like a madwoman, nothing made sense whatsoever. And ever since then, I could smell that ammonia, acrid, sour smell you've been talking about. I was hoping it was just my cold, but I'm over that now. I'm still suffering with this smell. Also discharge is sometimes bright red, sometimes not... now it's more just white/ yellowy.

It does not burn, it does not itch, everything externally looks normal and healthy. I just can't stand the smell. Honestly, I'm at a point now where I can't face having sex, going to the bathroom, going outside... I'm sure it's not as bad as I think but I can smell it and it's so depressing.

I have never had this problem in my life. Never! The only thing that changed was I had sex. We waited a long time after I had my operation to be sure I'd be alright and safe.

I have a couple of questions:

For those of you who have HAD this discharge and had Mirena removed - did it GET RID of this god-damn smell?

When you get it removed in the UK, can my GP do it? Can he do it there and then?

I think I want this thing out, and to have tests done afterwards. I have never had this and I'm so mortified. I've been off work for a year with stress from the pain and bleeding from Endometriosis, I had surgery to help it and I've had really bad depression and was just starting to feel I could go back to work. I sell perfume... there is NO WAY I could go to work with this smell. No way. I just want to cry every time I think about it. Please, please tell me this smell goes away when you take it out... otherwise I really don't know what on earth I will do.

I have had my mirena for almost two years, and ever since the beginning i havent really had a period and sometimes have tissue come out. For about the past 6 months i have had this annoying discharge,i cant stand it anymore! I went to my obgyn like 4 times and even got checked for stds and everything was normal. But i know this discharge isnt normal so it must be my iud. I am driving myself crazy cause im scared that something might be wrong..On top of the discharge i always have a constant urge to pee..all day. Sometimes it even makes me cry because i have had it!  I also got tested for a uti and the test came back negative..does anyone else have the symptoms of having to pee all the time and discharge..?

I WOULD GET HORRIBLE STABBING PAINS IN MY OVARIES, AND THE DISCHARGE!!!! HORRIBLE YELLOW WHITE MUCOUS, THE SMELL IS FOWL, AND IM CONSTANTLY WIPING MYSELF TO FEEL CLEAN. I THINK ITS TIME TO HAVE THIS OUT. I HAVE FELT ASHAMED FOR ALMOST A YEAR ABOUT THIS DISCHARGE. MY DOCTOR TOLD ME EVERYTHING IS FINE AT ALL MY CHECK UPS BUT IVE HAD IT, I THINK HES A QUACK AND I WANT THIS OUT.

Ladies alot of the things your saying sounds like Bacterial Vaginosis to me. I hav mirena also, and I dont hav any strong odor or heavy discharge. However last summer, I had 3 different sexual partners and was having a very watery and heavy discharge. At first it was once a week , every sunday morning, then later that night my period would start. The odor would disappear and I would be relieved, then I would hav sex and it would come back. I went to the ER because Im seventeen n live with my dad so Ive never actually had a gynacologist and they tested me for stds, and prescribed me something they thought would help before they even had the test results. The problem never subsided so I went to my family doctor, and they said I had bacterial vaginosis, and that the doctor at the ER must hav thought I had clamedia because he prescribed me doxycyline or w/e. FINALLY it went away. Bacterial Vaginosis will come and go, and will get worse if not treated. It can also lead to PID, so I suggest talking to the doctor about what I hav said. Hope I helped. BTW Bacterial Vaginosis is not an std because a man has no symptoms of it. It is usually associated with a man who has many sexual partners though. Im pretty sure it can jus be caused by bacteria foreign to that part of the body. Be as clean as possible, that always helped me when I had it.

I guess I'll comment since I've read almost all the comments one here. Mirena was great for me until I realized that I'm NOT CRAZY! My son was 8 pounds at birth and I've been doing kegels like a crazy person--in the car, at work, on dates (ESPECIALLY ON DATES), because I thought I was "loose" down there because every time I would have sex with my husband, I felt so wet that I didn't and he probably didn't feel a freakin thing because there was no friction at all. Also, if I "push" or have a bowel movement I'll have long, stretchy lines of mucus that run all the way from my vag to the water in the freakin toilet. It's ridiculous. I've had Mirena for over 3 years and it has given me a complex for sure. I had to get put on anti-anxiety meds because I was so self-conscious about my "vaginal state". When I'm not aroused and just "normal" I'm tight as freakin virgin, but as soon as I get turned on its like the gates of heaven (or HELL) open wide up and HELLO WETNESS. WTF! I'm so mad! I'm having this thing removed immediately so I can have a sex life again. Acne I can handle. The unruly vagina has got to go!

well im reading most of these and it seems to be the same thing over and over again .. people complaining about the discharge .. but you are warned about it .. if you actually read the little book that it comes with that YOU are supposed to keep it tells you everything in it
i guess if your getting infections over and over again your body is trying to tell you that it shouldnt be there .. some people just cant use it .. thats why theres so many different types .. i just had mine put in two weeks ago .. yeaa im getting the brown discharge but its not stinky smelling like you guys are explaining and i only had cramps for the day i had it put in.. no problems otherwise
maybe you gues really should ready the little book .. cause everything you guys are explaining is in this little booklet

Catiamichelle you had yours for two weeks when you posted and let me say, I was completely fine with everything for a few weeks too...Maybe even a couple of months minus a few side effects. I had regular but long periods and would spot here and there. However, the side effects are now hitting me full force and it's only been about 6 months. I haven't had a period in the past two months but I spot almost constantly. My breasts get that sore, tingling feeling like I'm pregnant and there are days I'm fully bloated. I'm experiencing a nasty, smelly, slimy discharge in quantities only experienced while pregnant, my face breaks out, I have NO sex drive, go through mood swings, and have pain around my ovaries almost daily. The times I do have sex it's slightly painful and I always bleed afterwards.
As far as the little book you get with the Mirena, I didn't get one. All I got was a talk from the gyno about some light spotting or cramping, and a bit of info on how my period may be in the future. I had to read up on this thing myself, and according to the Mirena Web site, only a small percentage of women are supposed to constantly battle this sh*t! I am SO done with this thing and the first opportunity I get it's coming out!

This is my second Mirena. I've had it for about 8 months now. My second daughter is almost 2 and i had the first one put in right after she was born. however after a few months of non-stop bleeding and intense pain and cramping they found it had only been inserted halfway. I had it taken out and tried birth controll but with my busy lifestyle couldn't keep on track so i was advised to try the iud again. i had been informed it wouldn't cause weight gain and would stop my periods all together after a few months. however I cannot lose weight even though i diet and exercise and go to a weight loss clinic every month. i literally have to eat tiny healthy snacks to keep from even gaining. I haven't stopped having a period...it lasts days longer and is heavier than before. I also have a foul smell once a month for a few days or so. I have no sexual drive at all. and i have constant strange mood swings....i am having it taken' out asap and not having it replaced! i guess for some of us it just does NOT  make life "easier". But only complicates every day life.

Ive had the mirena since October 2009 and the first year was great! Lost my period completely, no side affects what so ever. After about a year it all came at once! gained a bunch of weight in my abdomen, lost my labido, painful cramps after intercourse and bleeding after intercourse, as well as infections and gross discharge! I have to say the CONSTANT discharge has got to be the worse part! I absolutely HATE it!!!! If i had insurance right now i would have i removed tomorrow! and plan to have it removed in the near future hopefully! I was unaware of all of these side affects when i choose this type of birth control, had i known it would be like this, i would not have choose it!

I'm 22, I've had Mirena since December 1, 2010. I figured the spotting was going to happen, I wasn't doubting that, but I've been having this problem for two weeks now. It doesn't smell, but it's that annoying dark brown blood in my underwear like all the time now, and, I also had a bout of BRIGHT red blood, but that was only once. I was thinking back to when I had gotten on the shot, I bled for a month strait! Constant, but this is just getting annoying and is the reason I'm doing a little research. If you smell down there and it's not going away.. You need to go to the doctor and really complain. Spotting(occasional) is one of the side effects and there is nothing anyone can do about it. I had a loss of sex drive for about a month and it has since returned, as stated though, two weeks of spotting is annoying. It's just like when I would have a regular period, just unexpected! I never know when it's going to be in my underwear, ugh! Anyway, I haven't had any pain, but an occasional cramp or two just like when you would get your period also. I am figuring mirena is just working it's magic. I find when I'm doing a lot of activity it is at its worst. Anyway, anyone else have the "old" blood problem?

I too have had this mirena IUD for about 2 months, and i am seirously considering getting it removed, i am sick of always discharging something out of my crotch, blood, brown thick blood, white discharge.. i feel like a freaking sink. i too am horrible at taking pills. the doctor had a horrible time getting it in, first attempt, my cervix fought back and actually bent the first IUD, then she got another one where she ended up having to grab my cervix with some forecepts.. and holy $#!& did that hurt! I think i am going to give it a little more time, but i am not holding my breath. I would just like to let everyone know that is reading this, everyone here has found this site becasue everyone is looking up side effects, i bet if you looked up how awesome mirena is, you could find a whole forum just like this with chicks that are 100% happy with it, so it comes down to eprsonal choice, everyone's body reacts differntly. i am having issues and just wanted to confirm that it was some what common. but for others searching for answers, if you feel like something is wrong go to your doctor, protect your body.

Had my mirena in May 2010 after suffereing really heavy periods since the birth of my son 6 years ago.  The only "pro" for me is that i have no period whatsoever which is an absolute blessing But the "cons", i have that constant horrible smelling discharge which leaves me feeling like im swollen down below and itching n burning. Get cramps in my abdomen, right side and lower back, spotty all the time, weight gain even tho i go the gym 4 times a week, increased sweating and lastly, the mood swings, i can go from 0 to ***** in 5 seconds, either that, or wanting to go play in traffic....I just dont know what to do now, whether to keep it in or get it removed, is it really worth all these side effects just to have no periods :-$

I also have had the IUD Mirena since 11/07/10 and i have had the same problem. But the day after i had it inserted i stopped bleeding and only spotted here and there. Until 04/05/11 i finally started my period with lots of pain and now its back to a nasty smelling yellowish brown discharge/leak. I went to my doc's 2 days ago and complained again about all the problems and they said i now have BV.Needless to say they said i should take it out. And due to all the other previous problem  plus these new problems the suggest that i have a full hysterectomy. So if you continue having these problem i would have it taken out!!!! I will suggest the birth control yazmin if u havent tried it already. I loved it more then any other BC i have tried. I have many problems with my female parts so this helped all of them. The only reason i had to get off it was because my BP became a problem and so i was hi risk for a stroke! i hope this helps. Feel free to ask questions!!!Good Luck

I too have the same problem, I got my Mirena at the beginning of the year and I will occasionally get a smelly discharge and it's even worse when I spot during my period.  Ughhh, this is the worse.  I know my boyfriend loves me but I'm really self conscious about sex and Oral sex (on me) is out of the question.  I'm a very clean person and this "rotten crotch syndrome" is enough to drive me crazy.

I am so glad I found this psot.  Can't wait to share this with others that I know with the Mirena IUD.

Thanks again.

I just had my mirena put in not even a week ago and I'm concerned about the discharge. My doctor highly recommended this birth control over the other options, but didn't mention I might have a daily discharge. I'm a little upset and worried that this will not pass. It's embarrassing and makes me not want to have sex, which defeats the purpose of having birth control. Of course, since I had to pay a portion of the cost, I feel like having it removed so soon will be a waste of my money. I guess I will just have to wait and see if it clears up at all.

Wow, I am so glad I found this forum... I got my IUD in Frebruary 2011 and as of tiday I have had several infections. At first I thought my boyfriend gave me something I rushed to the doctors only to find out I had an infection that had gotten so severe it caused alot of abdominal pain. I took the atibiotics and it cleared up in a few days. One week later I had a yeast infection and then another bacteria vaginosis infection....which just wont seem to go away or either it keeps coming back. it;s truly embarrassing especially since I am now in a new relationship. I am so afraid to have sex because I dont want him to smell that awful discharge smell. We were on a date one night and I had just gotten another infectiona and he kept asking me what the smell in the car was.... it was only our 4th or 5th date, Once in the place i immediately went to the ladies room adn took off my thongs and threw them away and cleaned myself up! This was sooo embarrassing but what else could I do, since then he and I have gotten closer and I just told him the truth.... I keep getting infections with a very foul smell and I think its being caused bt my IUD. Luckily hes avery understanding and said he would go with me on May 31st to have this damn thing removed. after speaking with my mother about it she told me she went through the same thing only worse.... her IUD got lodged in her uterine wall and had to surgically be removed. I can't wait to take this thing out !

I hate to add to the fear so I will stick with the facts:

1.  I had the copper IUD inserted 3 years ago, my body rejected it and I had it removed after a few months.  I had severe cramping and pain in my legs.

2.  A few months later I had the morena inserted.  I had no issues with rejection, it was painful to insert but almost immediately I had no more periods.

3.  I had the Morena more than 8 months, then I met a guy and we started having sex.  I got my first Bacterial Vaginosis - it seemed to start with a yeast infection.  It went away on it's own, and I got it maybe twice while having sex with this guy.

4.  I had the Morena almost a year, no more infections that I remember and I met a new guy.  BV/yeast infections again.  Went to OBGYN, he assured me that I did not have an STD and that sometimes I can have an adverse reaction to another person's bacteria levels on his penis which can cause an over abundance of bacteria in my vagina that causes the fishy smell.  Awesome.  I had no pain, just the smell and discharge.

5.  I took antibiotics - both by mouth and the vaginal insertable gel twice to get rid of them.  Things with this guy didn't work out after 5 months of dating either.

6.  Couple of months later, meet another guy.  Each time we would have sex I would get another freaking BV.  So embarrassing.  My OBGYN still assures me this is normal, I test for STD's again and nothing.  I take more antibiotics.  It goes away, but a few weeks later always comes back.  It is obviously chronic now.  Sometimes with a yeast infection, sometimes not.  Now I've been dating this same guy for 6 months, no other partners.  AGAIN with a yeast infection, we just both took the antibiotic by mouth thinking maybe he had something that may have been causing it.  Obviously taking the antibiotics is killing all the bacteria in my vagina, good and bad which starts the whole cycle all over again.

7.  I have been doing tons of research online about this, searching for a permanent fix.  A few sites recommended putting live cultured yogurt in my vagina to help restore it's natural bacteria... I know that sounds crazy but I was desperate.  So I did it one time and of course I got a horrendous yeast infection.  Now I can't be sure I didn't already have one brewing, but regardless now I've got brown watery discharge and the outside of my vagina itches/burns.  Awesome.  I've also been drinking 100% cranberry juice as the sites said to do with the yogurt.  I haven't had a UI at least ;-).

8.  Sex between my boyfriend and I is really becoming affected.  Now he's got a case of ED and even though he assures me it is mental on his part, I can't help but think it is my freaking ridiculous case of vaginitis.  I don't feel sexy, I'm always worried about whether or not I will smell, etc.

9.  In 45 minutes I go to see my OBGYN again.  I am going to make him LOOK to verify there is not a huge bacterial breeding ground surrounding the IUD.  I also want to verify it is still in the right place, my bf swears he's been poked  with me on top (he's pretty long, I wouldn't be surprised).  I also want my OBGYN to bring his partners in on this.  He's been blowing it off like it is no big deal and I have had this up to my eyeballs.  I finally found the man of my dreams and my vagina - or possibly IUD - are trying to sabotage it!!

I will keep everyone posted.

I'm so glad I found this site, I thought I was the only person that had experienced this.  I got the Mirena inserted in February of 2010.  I used to have extremely bad periods so this was the way to go, since I don't do so well with pills.  This is where my nightmare begins.  I never used to cramp, ever since then I cramp horribly, luckily no it's not so bad.  I got the watery discharge with the foul odor that comes with it.  I have terrible mood swings, I break out and I have nasty hair growth everywhere.  My periods are no where near as bad as they used to be, but I have to wear a pantyliner everyday, because I never know when I'm going to start bleeding and the discharge which only goes away while I'm sleeping.  This makes sex very difficult because I always feel unclean.  There is no more spontaneity in my sex life.  I went to my ob/gyn to see if there was any infection and I didn't have one present and was assured that this was normal.  Well, it's been a year.  When will this all go away???  I haven't had it taken out yet because I'm not sure what's worse...what I'm going through now or the horrible periods I used to have....

I am really glad I found this blog. I've only had the Mirena in for about three months and a bit now, but I have had a few of the symptoms you guys have reported:

- brown or very discoloured discharge that comes out in clumps, a bit like cottage cheese
- frequent and unpredictable spotting (especially after sex)
- that Godawful smell which seems to be there almost every day of the month now
- a lack of natural lubrication so much so that it hurts - I never used to have this problem
- periods that are lighter, less painful, but considerably longer

I have not experienced any weight gain, nor has my skin changed. However, that may be due to genetics and a lot of high-impact exercise. The thing that bugs me most is my sex drive - pre-Mirena, my sex drive was healthy and I experienced normal arousal patterns. I spent the first month getting used to the coil, so whatever 'abnormalities' I experienced I put down to my body adjusting itself. However, after the second month, I found it very strange that I no longer wanted to have sex as often and that it took me much, much longer to climax. It was also harder for me to become sexually aroused because, like many others here, there was always that "oh **** what's my liner going to look like" moment when the panties come off.

Initially, I figured that I would 'wait it out' because I have read that it would take some time for the body to adjust to this foreign object sitting there. My 'trial period' was supposed to be six months, but having read everything on here, I'm not sure I want to wait any longer.

I think it's very misleading for health practitioners and even national healthcare providers to provide incomplete information on what side-effects may follow. Not only is the list of physiological symptoms incomplete, failing to take into account possible abnormal discharge and changes in sex drive; there is no acknowledgement of the possible psychological outcomes of getting the Mirena. Obviously, as a result of having to continuously wear liners and worry about smelling like a fish market, self-esteem, sex drive and the rest of it go down the drain.

Having read this, I am going to have a talk about getting the Mirena removed with my boyfriend because I got it initially thinking that it would improve our sex life - fat joke that turned out to be, what with me worrying all the time and sex being unpleasant because of the smell and the clumpy discharge. I want to thank everyone here for being so honest about some truly embarrassing symptoms - it's given me the confidence to talk about my own, and it's also convinced me that this is obviously not the best choice for my body or mind.

i got the mirena in feburary and it is now the end of june. i had frequent cramps since day one. they went away around may. the doc told me i would experience some cramping and spotting for the first few months. i only bled the day it was put in. well, up until the beginning of june. i experienced a brown discharge that i assumed was a light period. but two weeks after the brown discharge went away, i then had bright red spotting that turned to brown within a few days. i am still having this brown discharge and im not sure its my period. (obviously we dont have 2 in one month) it doesnt have any type of smell or odor, but i feel that something is wrong. im calling my ob tomorrow and if this is supposed to be 'normal' i will probably have my mirena removed. its super embarrassing when i wipe after peeing and it looks like i took a poo! i definitely dont want my boyfriend down there when this is going on! my sex drive went down dramatically after i got the mirena. im not sure if its because im busy with my daughter 24/7, or if its from the horomones. but this past month i feel that with brown discharge, i definitely dont want to have any type of intercourse. i hope this goes away and doest happen often, because im really bad with remembering to take birth control in pill form, and im scared of needles. this is kind of a last resort for me but im really not liking the side effects. good luck to all you women out there who currently have the mirena!

Well Well Well......Yes I too have this stupid freakin problem

First!  I have been with one guy since 2004
Second! I never felt pain or burning with my other symptoms.

My IUD History:

Oct 2006-had my little boy

Nov 2006- Mirena put in= bleed for TWO months

Mar 2007-NO MORE periods by now, associated with a metallic bloody acrid dead smell
----Went to OBG: Results=Nooo Problem-----

July 2007- Same acrid blood smell
----Went to OBG: Results=NOOO problem----

Oct 2007: FISHY YELLOW DISCHARGE
----Went to OBG: Results= NOOO STD's no BV no Nothing-------

Then to now july 4th 2011- Been Smelling like fish, wearing panty liners, and washing like hell with dial soap, completely lost sex drive, don't feel like a "lady" and HATE MIRENA!!!!

Congratulations to all of us that trusted a piece of plastic being stuck in our body and being repeatedly told by our OBG's that we are over reacting and don't have problems.

I will be up with my 5 years in Nov this year...but now that I have finally found this forum, I think I'll have it out tomorrow.

Maybe I will follow up with my findings if it goes away!

GOOD LUCK TO US ALL!

I was wondering what my discharge is from. I am only 31 and I 've been having this brownish discharge lately. After my last visit, I had an infection. They gave me antibiotics, and it helped.. I think. But I have a constant either clear discharge or a brown one. I've been having odor issues lately too. I was hoping it wasn't some sort of kidney issue, but didn't think so with me being so young for that. Now I'm convinced its due to my mirena. I love mirena otherwise... I love not having periods, I hated getting it inserted of course (A LITTLE PAIN- I DON'T THINK SO!!), but its so easy for me to use, and it was almost completely covered by my insurance at the time. I couldn't use pills because it made my blood pressure skyrocket. So compared to that, mirena is great. however, the side effects suck. Oh well. I still think no periods out-weighs everything else.

So... For the past 4 years I have had:
Severe depression
gained 35 pounds that won't budge
back pain
hair loss
weird hair growth
severe mood swings
nausea
SEVERE MIGRAINES!! I'm talking 3-5 PER WEEK!
loss of memory
fuzzy brain
ADHD
ridiculously pale skin (i'm fair to begin with, but I have stopped being able to tan... actually get lighter in the sun!)
smelly discharge (think rotten garlic trout)
no sex drive
total fatigue but
can't sleep
worsened asthma
double vision in both eyes (quadra-vision?) :)

I've gone to my doctor the whole time trying to figure out what's wrong. She just kept piling on the meds. I was on prozac, adderal, 3 different migraine meds, inhailers and NOTHING HELPED!

Guess what? I had the mirena inserted 4 years ago.

I am on day 3 of post-Mirena life now and so far...... (drumroll please....)

5 pounds lost!
not even a twinge of a headache!
Clearer head!
I actually smiled without trying for the first time in years!
I have energy (I woke up with out my alarm, worked all day and then worked in the yard!!)
my back doesn't hurt for the first time in years!

I cannot stress the importance of getting that thing out of your body enough. I was an idiot and didn't even THINK about it being my IUD.

I have had mirena three in a half years, and the experience has been very bitter sweet. In the first year I had a heavy period and seem to always spot in between periods so I literally felt like I was constantly bleeding :( I went to the doctor about the brown discharge with an awful smell I was told it was normal and it was old blood. Second year up until now, I have constantly had a weird discharges ranging in colors brown with a mix of white, to yellowish green (yes!) I knew I didn't have an STD because I wasn't having unprotected sex so I went to the doctor once again and told my case. I mentioned that it reminded me of times when I has vaginosis as a teenager. Doc checked me couldn't find anything not even a yeast infection and she claimed to not to smell the awful smell I ve been smelled for a year ( in which I used tampons to cove up the smell and discharge, its a temporary relief) long story. Short the doc said if u think its vaginosis I will write u a prescription and lets see what happens. WA LA!!! For a month in a half no smell no awful discharges I felt normal again and was sooo happy!!! But I started getting so stressed and worried about things I turned to smoking cigarettes ( I usually dnt smoke) and the very next day the awful smell came back and my discharge has gotten worse and looks yellowish green and extremely watery and I'm so worried on top of all the worries I already have. Just wondering if any women have also experienced this same situation??? I'm back to using tampons all day every once again and just tired of this struggle to be normal while on BC. :( I'm going back to the doctor this up coming week. Lets see what happens, ill keep u ladies posted. ♥

I've been having major issues with my mirena for a year. Always bloated, gained 40 lbs, painful clots, nasty discharge, cervical pain, infections that aren't stds that won't go away no matter what. And my doctors all have said, oh no.. It's impossible that the mirena is causing all this. But I know for a fact, its the mirena. I spoke with a few doctors before I got it, and they said, its amazing, and never told me of any side effects, even when I asked. Now, no doctor will talk to me about it.. I'm brushed off. They'll say there's no way, suggest its my soap, then change the subject. I suggest against the mirena. Anyone know of a good alternative? Thinking of lybrel.

So I have the same problems mentioned above , I went to my ob She said everything is so fine. I gained like 30 lbs and she says it has nothing to do with the IUD , but I def. believe it does. I have a nasty clear discharge , Kind of like a mucus plug and it is always in my underwear after the day is over .... I am so sick of this thing and I am definitely getting it removed. Even though my OB tells me she does not really feel comfortable removing it , Because it is a expensive device and I still have another three years worth of it. IS she even allowed to tell me that ???

i am so glad there is this blog / site. since i had the mirena fitted i did have discharge and bad cramps but it settled down within 3 months. i recently started seeing someone new and since we started having sex i have smelled something really weird, and didnt want to mention it. its been making me feel uncomfortable. but tonight i was really embarressed when he said he smelled something funny when we were in a certain position and it really put him off, to the point he had to stop. i know it wasnt anything else, and i dont know what to do as the smell is the only issue, only noticed it since having sex again but its making me not want too and i feel like crying. i tried explaining that i thought it was the mirena but i think he doesnt believe me and that i'm not hygenic or something?? please help, does anyone know if this can be changed or shall i just have it removed? thank you

I have had the Mirena for 3 1/2 years now and I'm having the same issues alot of you are talking about and I'm going through all of the doctor stuff right now.  I called my doctor about a month ago and explained to her that I'm having milky nipple discharge, yellowish-green discharge and after losing 40 lbs the past yr I've gained half of it back within a few months time period.  She sent me for blood work and said it all came back normal and pregnancy test negative.  I asked them if it could be because of the Mirena and she said no.  I called them a few weeks later because I was still having the same problems, all they could tell me was it was nothing to do with them so they sent me to do a ultrasound (which turned out fine) and to a breast doctor.  So at the age of 27 I have had my first mammogram to see if that was okay...surprise surprise it was.  So now I back to square one with everyone telling me nothing is wrong but I know good and well something isn't right.  Also what is real frustrating is that my gyno has not seen me, she only sends me for blood work or other test and only talks to me on the phone through her nurses.

After reading all of this I think I'm going to see about getting it taken out and see what others options I have.

I too have had similar problems to many of you.  At first, I loved the Mirena.  Had no problems at all, LOVED having no periods.  Sex drive dropped a bit but otherwise, no side effects.

Fast-forward 2 years and I am getting this weird, milky discharge on a daily basis.  It smelt funny, can't really describe it, not fishy but overly-musky and definitely not right.  Had to shower twice a day and change my jeans halfway through a day just to mask it.

I went to the dr, she was lovely and understanding.  Tested for everything - all came back negative.  No BV, no thrush, nothing.  She tells me it could just be my body reacting negatively to the IUD.  So I book to have it out.  Today, it was removed and already I notice a difference!  Have not had any discharge today, for the first time in 3 months.

I'm going to go onto Loestrin 30 (combined pill) - have read many good things about this and not found one person who has complained of discharge, so hopefully that's the end of it.

So, if any of you are being fobbed off by doctors, told there is no infection - well sure, there probably isn't, but your body may simply not like the Mirena.  I think because it's still a relatively new contraceptive option, there aren't enough long term studies to back up our claims.  My advice is, if it doesn't feel right, get it out.

Good luck to everyone having issues with this.

Man... I am so glad I founf this information and it's not just me. I thought I was going crazy. I have had the mirena since January and I don't think I can take it anymore. Baterical infections, excessive discharge, spotting, odor, I think if you name it I have dealt with it. I think there has to be a better method of birth control for me without the hassal but again it's nice to know that I am not the only one.

I posted earlier about having my Mirena removed because of discharge which suddenly appeared after 2 years of no problems.  Well here's a little update.

Before I had the Mirena removed, I was tested for every infection - BV, thrush, STDs - all came back clear.  I decided to have it out anyway, convinced that it was to blame for the smelly discharge.  After removal, my doctor sent it off for further testing.  She did not expect anything to come back.  However, I just had a call from her.  There was a bug growing on the Mirena!!  So even though none of the swab tests showed anything, my coil was dodgy!  It was a rare bug that even my doctor had never heard of before.

Therefore, I would urge any of you in a similar situation....if you have your Mirena removed, ask your doctor if they can send it off for testing.  This is still a very new form of contraception so the long term effects are still being uncovered.  If there are bugs growing on these things inside us, other people need to be aware.  Just because your swab tests come back clear, it does not mean that the Mirena itself is healthy....

I've been prescribed some antibiotics to clear up any remnants of the bug.  Hopefully this is the end of my Mirena hell.

I had my son in July of 2010, then got mirena in Oct. I have not had a period nor any odd discharges since at least Feb 2011. Now all of a sudden, I am having period like symptoms. Over the past three days, I've had brownish (old blood?), and red (bloody) discharges. My periods used to be nightmares. (Super, super heavy. As in an ultra super every three hrs. Cramps like early labor, back pains, lasting 10 days..ect.) This discharge isn't following in suit. The only other symptoms I'm having are light back pain and light cramping. Can anyone explain this to me? (It's starting to cause fights with my hubby.) Thank you!

I have had my 1st Miranea IUD put in in 2006. The first year it was in I had real bad headaches, acne and pelvic pains. My periods were long and sporadic. I didn't have any discharge though. I had it removed in 2008. A month later I was pregnant. After I had my baby in 2008 I was pregnant 4 months later. So in 2009 I got my 2nd IUD. I have had nothing but severe problems since. My periods went away after the 2nd month of having it in. That part is the best. The worst is that I continually get infections. I have severe lower back pain. Swelling of the breasts when I am ready to start. I have some very thick brownish discharge. It comes out sporadically. I have NO sex drive. I have severe burning when I urinate. I was told I have IC as well, which only happened to appear after the 2nd IUD. I am constantly tired and very upset that these pains wont go away. I am constantly peeing. The discharge is gross. I have my husband making an appointment to get fixed so I can have this removed. I have also put on about 15 pounds in 1 year.

Hi Ladies, Thank you very much for all the above comments. I have a 7 week old baby and my OB insisted that I Use Mirena as a birth control. I have never used any birth control options before. Even after reading the information booklet my OB gave me I wasn't confident to use it. Thank God I searched the net for comments and found this site. Thank you to all of you again for saving me from a big mess.

I would advise you all to get it removed, I had the copper one for 3 years, and the whole time I went thru the same issues...heavier periods, cramping, constant bv infections, burning and pain during sex, nasty discharge, clots, & spotting. I just got mine removed, its been a week, and now Im having problems with dryness and pain during sex, Im so fustrated, I wish I would have never gotten it put in.

Yes I have had mine for a year and 3 months and i am tired of the leaking I have ruined so many good panties from this, when i work out i feel like i am peeing on myself. I have sometimes the smelly discharge and its all clear. I have to take like 4 showers a day cause i constantly feel dirty down there.
My sex drive is gone and its hard to explain to my boyfriend that it not him his this udi. I am really thinking about taking it out but don't have insurance so that causes a problem for me right now

I am on Mirena and I have all those problems! I had my Mirena in since May of 2010. Before I had my son, I had tremendously horrible periods! It was to the point to where I could not even get out of bed, walk, eat or just even uncurl out of the little position I was in. After I had my son I decided to get Mirena, and it took those kinds of periods away from me and I was so blessed! So although we are all gettting those sucky problems, I am still going to stay on Mirena. I am young and I do not want anymore children probably until my 5 years of being on Mirena is up!

Hello ladies,

I had the Mirena IUD inserted about a week ago. I chose Mirena because I have been having excruciating periods with lots of heavy clots and lower back pain. I am looking for some relief with my period and hope to get some, but my problem so far is...ever since I got Mirena put in I have been leaking smelly  light red or light brownish liquid. I feel dirty, smell fishy, and having to constantly wear a liner, wipe up, bathe and change panties several times a day. This has cause a slight halt in my sex life because I don't ever feel clean enough, nor think that I smell fresh enough to have sex with my husband like normal. I have a Dr appointment Nov. 23, 2011 - I hope that he can explain and this smelly discomfort will stop soon.

Omg!!  I am practically crying my *** off also!
I have had mirena for a about two years now, I originally got on it because I pretty much had a menstrual cycle for an entire year straight every single day, and Mirena stopped me periods almost completely.  But at the same time I have had extreme hair loss, and now using Rogain, disgusting discharge ALL the time which makes me not even want to have sex! My face has been so broke out (the dermatologist can't seem to solve it) that I am too depressed to even go outside without loading up on the makeup which makes me face even worse!  I had no idea that Mirena was causing all of this because my doctor never told me, even after I explained what was happening to me...
Omg i'm so upset that I didn't look into this sooner.  It's so great knowing that there is a cause rather than it being just me.
Thank you ladies so much!!

I’ve had the same problem with odor and finally solved it, and it was so easy!!  I feel so much better and so much more comfortable now that it’s resolved.  I wanted to post something about this because I noticed on a lot of comments when I was searching for answers that people are going on antibiotics and that may not be necessary.

I got a Mirena IUD about 2 months ago and I’ve had some form of spotting/bleeding/discharge most days since I got it.  My doctor told me that should clear up after about 3 months.  I ended up noticing that my vaginal odor was getting worse and worse no matter how much I washed and I was feeling really embarrassed about it.  My doctor told me that because of constantly having blood in my vagina (even a small amount) I ended up with bacterial vaginosis (he tested me for it).  Thank goodness the solution was simple.  He told me to douche twice a day (I’ve only done it once a day) with a vinegar douche.  He specifically said not to use anything except vinegar and water.  I went to a drugstore to buy a douching product just to get the applicator (I bought summer’s eve douche – which should probably not be used because it has fragrance in it and it could make things worse).  I got a 1 liter screw-cap wine bottle, washed it out and rinsed it well and mixed 2 TBS of apple cider vinegar (you can also use plain white vinegar) and filled the rest with water.  I dumped out the Summer's Eve douche and refill the applicator and use it in the shower, making sure to wash it between uses.  The reason this works is because the vinegar makes your vaginal PH more acidic (the way it’s supposed to be) so that the bad bacteria die out.  It made a huge difference after just one use and that was about a week ago.  I can’t believe how much better I feel now.  If you want to get something that’s a little longer lasting than douching, I also bought a product called Rephresh which is great too.  Just google it to get more info.  Good luck girls!  Don’t worry – there’s a simple solution that you can do today for virtually no cost.

I've experienced the same thing, only now my discharge has changed to the yellowish/green gunky, snot looking disgusting fishy smelling discharge! I hate it, BUT my friend has the 10yr IUD and she has very heavy bleeding all month long and bad cramps. I'm not sure if that's what I would do. But that's what I know so far. Good luck with your decision.

I want this thing out but ......................... my docs dont do it and waiting for an appointment or even trying to get one is taking too long. Bad odor just started about 2 1/2 months ago... I ONLY want to have sex the day before and day that I would normally start my periods that I no longer have. On those 2 days a month I have crazy sex drive. But if I miss that window... it is gone for another 27 or so days! ***** for hubby. I have had my IUD for about 2 yrs now. I noticed that the first month I had no period was when the odor symptoms  and watery discharge began. I treated a couple of times for yeast infections even though it was a 'different' smell. That didn't work. I hate going to the ob/gyn. And I really don't wanna remove my iud because I suffer from horrible painful, long, and heavy periods. Thanks for all your comments it is nice to know I am not alone!

Hi, I see that there are a lot of us experiencing the same problems. I've had my Mirena for about 6mths now after the birth of my third child. Ever since I had the Mirena inserted I have had constant watery discharge and I have to wear a liner everyday. It is causing problems between my husband and I during sex due to the increased lubrication. I have read that one of the ways the Mirena works is by increasing the mucus at the entrance of the uterus to help prevent the sperm entering the uterus. My question is... is there a solution??? Can this be fixed or should I just get it removed and get my husband to have a vasectomy? Has anyone experiencing these problems had their Mirena replaced and had the problems go away? I love not having my period and am having no problems with my sex drive (which is an issue I have when I'm on the pill). Can anyone please help???

Maybe I'm the lucky one of all of us. I had the most horrible cramps during my period, I couldn't stay awake for a week before I started because I was so exhausted, and sometimes I felt like I was literally losing my mind because of the mood swings. Since I had my Mirena put in, yes, I've had some discharge, and it's kinda a pain, but this is far better than being hijacked by own body for two weeks a month. No matter what I tried, those two weeks were miserable for everyone, but it was destrying my life, and Mirena gave my life back to me. At 45, I guess the discharge is one of those things that I can openly discuss with my partner so I don't have to feel embarrassed about it. It's not optimal to have to use a liner now and then, since I've always used tampons, but it's not everday, so I don't mind. I hopee the things that have happened to everyone else here doesn't happen to me, but at least I know what to watch for. Believe me, I won't have ANY problem talking to my doctor about my concerns, maybe because I'm just too old to care what they think. They're supposed to be there for us, taking care of us, and if they don't, bye bye. Good luck, ladies

Well, i see im not the only one with all of these problems. So heres my story. I've had the mirena in for 3 years now, 3 months after my son was born. i couldnt wait because i thought this was the best BC ever! I didnt have to worry about taking a pill everyday and bleeding/spotting constantly like i did on BC pills. the first year i had it, it was great, no periods, no pain, didnt even know it was there. i recommended it to everybody and then after that first year/year and a half, all of the symptoms came on more and more, one after the other. First, the fatigue!!!! omg, i cant even take how tired i am! im a single mother, go to school and work, i do not have time to be this tired. i could sleep 12 hours a night with my son and still need 2 naps during the day, i just coudlnt get enough. Second, the acne is horrific! i have always had beautiful clear skin, always got compliments because when i say i never broke out, no joke, i didnt. (one pimple here and there). i drink tons of water all day, not a caffeine junkie because i have a very sensitive stomach so i know its not that and the acne i started getting is all over my chin and forehead and they're cystic pimples. they're enormous and come 2/4 at a time, ugliest things ive ever seen and so embarrassing!  Third thing, the discharge. i cannot stand with my whole heart to wear pads. i feel like im wearing a diaper and they're gross. since having this thing in me, i have to wear one everyday or i feel like i wet myself and not in a good way. its like a gush of water and i know its not std or anything else because i have not had sex in 2 years(no joke).and i've made them test me, even though i didnt have sex. i had/have no sex drive, no desire, no time...im far too busy to even want it, and i could care less about it. which leads me to the next problem. i had a very high sex drive, loved it. i could go months without even getting a single sensation of intimacy running through my body. im about to be 27, thats horrific to think i've lost my sex drive already but i know its gotta be because of this thing. I've also gotten increased lower back pain, it seems like it gets worse and worse the longer i have it in, and i never got cramps when i got my period before and now that i dont get my period with this in, i get them times 10! so sharp that i have to put so much pressure on my ovaries to alleviate the pain. the weight gain is clearly a symptom for us all. i also get dizzy spells like crazy and im also very edgy and have really high anxiety. and lastly, the headaches. the most annoying kind of headache imagineable, the one thats very faint but lingers no matter what. i have two friends who had the mirena and both got theirs taken out in the same amount of time, its like a 3 year thing. the first year is great and then every year after that, the symptoms get worse. today is thursday and im getting mine out on tuesday and i've never been more excited about something in my life, (except my sons arrival, of course). if any of you are experiencing problems, get it out! save yourself the torture.

I had my IUD inserted as an emergency due to contraception failure, but i was also considering it anyway as it would be more convenient. Since having it inserted I've had a really unpleasant consistency clear discharge - apologies - but it is comparable to the consistency of the stuff that comes out of your nose when you're ill. is this normal?! i am getting quite fed up and worried - a few things come to mind and i panic that the IUD may not have done its job in the first place...

Ditto on finding this sight.... i have been researching yellow vaginal dishcharge and have worked my nerves thinking some kind of cancer.  i have to wear a panty liner everyday.  i am so wet down there that the fat rolls between my vaginal become raw.  lol.  i guess that is because of the weight i have put on since having it it.  i too am gonna have it removed.  my husband and i are in our late 30's and i have two children and he has three.  i sure dont want the Brady Bunch but i cant take this anymore

I had mine inserted Dec 14. It was painful but nothing too bad. After insertion I had some pretty intense cramping and spotting for the next few days. Then when it came time for my period I had the most insane cramps I'd ever had. I had really short periods before getting the Merena but this period lasted for 10 days. My second period wasn't as bad but I had random spotting for about 2 weeks afterwards. I just got married and I used to have a pretty amazing sex drive and it was never an issue climaxing now however my sex drive has lowered and I have had a hard time reaching orgasm. Its pretty embarrassing cause it never use to be an issue. My husband has been super patient with me and because of this having an orgasm is becoming a lot easier again. I have also noticed a pretty foul odor... I'm super self conscious about it and am worried my husband can smell it. I'm also freaking out a bit after reading all of these posts that I might have bacterial vaginosis or PID. I have also noticed that my breasts and nipples are super tender. Has anyone experienced that? I think I'm going to give this thing a few more months and see what happens before I decide to take it out. I love not having to worry about getting pregnant though.

Mirena IUD have several issues.  Me my friends and cousin all have the same side effects. When you go to the doctor they tells you everything is perfect fine and it not the mirena, but I know better because why we all have the same issues.  The issues includes fishy discharge, spotting off and on, cramps in the leg and stomach when it usually be that time of the  month.  I will not be suprise if in the next couple year we will see a commerical showing we can sue for the mirena.  But it is a plastic device sure it has a lot baterial caught up there.  You must be really clean and have sex one person.  Take Pro biotic and drink plenty of water and get check often.   Good luck to all....

Omg i just cant believe how many people are having the same problem as i am. I thought the mirena would be soo worth it and it has been I barely get a period, if at all. But what kills me is this discharge! I've had the mirena for about 1 1/2 yr. I bled for 6 mons straight then it stop which i did my research and everyone seem to go through the same thing but I would say about 8 to 9mon i started getting very thick discharge! it didnt bother me too much till i was diagnosed with chlym which i got treated and got tested again after treatment and came out negative, but ever since then my discharge has gotten worse alot more thicker and more frequent. Now my discharge has this strong smell, not in a disgusting way but its jus alot more stronger than before and I'm sick of it! i feel nasty! im gonna get my self check again but idk if i want to continue with this anymore but i want to make sure i get another birth control anybody know of another iud thats good??

seriosly after all these post ive been reading its the same thing i never had green nipple discharge but i lactated for a long time not alot but during sex it was weird i never breast fed. I think i came up with a solution that this mirena has caused all these side effects! im just soo scared that this is not leading to PID or anything that can cause infertilty, im a young mother of my 1 yr old i want more children but just when I'm financly ready and mirena has been good to not get me preggo again but i want to mke sure it aint tkin away my abilty to have more children either...:(
