IUI and 16mm follicle

What size should a follicle be before an IUI?

How do they know if the follicles have an egg or not? My first IUI, I had 2 follicles... one had stopped growing at 14, and the other was 23. This past time, I had a 21 and one that was 17, and shrunk to 15. I realize through the ultrasounds measuring the follicles, they are aware of their development, but is anything known about the egg or how many?

Sorry for a juvenile-sounding question. I'm filled with so many questions, thoughts and research I just decided to go for asking it by this point!

My RE trigged at 18 for Clomid, and this time with Follistim Injectables the last time I was measured I had one at 15, one 13, and one 12, IUI 3 days later.... so I think between 15-18 with injectables because they tend to go when they are a little smaller.

Generally I think anywhere between 17-20 is good.

Injectables or oral medicated cycle (clomid etc)?   If it is injectables they like to see it around 16-18 mm for maturity.  Oral medicated cycle 20+ would be considered a mature follicle.
