IVF/HSG

My husband and I are in the process of starting IVF. I have an appointment this Monday for something called an HSG. They pour dye into your tubes, look at your ovaries among other things. The doctor gave me a prescription for Vicodin. I went to pick up the prescription and it is actually Hydrocodone. Unfortunately Hydrocodone does not work for me. I was wondering if anyone out there has had this procedure done and how painful it is? I am getting pretty nervous but I know it will be worth it in the end. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hi there.

i had my hsg this week and it was uncomfortable. i took 2 painkillers an hour before and was fine. They put your feet up in stirrups intitally to put the spectulum in and then take it off to inject the dye. The most unconfortable part was the initial bit for me and of course having my fanny in the air wasnt the best! I didnt BD for 24 hours after the procedure.

good luck

Thanks to all of you! I feel much more at ease just knowing this is a pretty common thing. And I don't feel so alone. Thanks again! Blessings to all of you.

when i had mine done, just felt very uncomfortable and the burning as aslchick mentioned. I just took tylenol both before and after. It was just a bit more painful/uncomfortable than I thought it would be...but I had no one telling me anything about it (was about 9 yrs ago!) but i took nothing stronger than tylenol.
Good luck...it will go fine and will hopefully give you some answers, and also, as mentioned before, can clear you out a bit..many people conceive after having this done because their tubes get a little "clearance".
again...good luck to you! :O)

My experience was more than uncomfortable, but not excruciating - the good thing is that it is fast!  It burned a bit...

My RE had me take alot of Tylenol (I want to say 1000 mg) before I came in for it and it helped and then I took more as soon as I could.  The pain didn't last too long throughout the day - FWIR, I went back to work!

Good luck!

Mine was fine. I just had some mild cramps, like if I was on my period. I think it hurts more if you have blockages, but if so, the HSG can actually help clear some of those blockages (if minor). Also, my RE told me to take a couple of pain killer before the procedure. I can't remember which kind, though...

Good luck!

Not before only advil after i got home and it worket in a couple of min. So keep it with you and take it asoon as you go out of the clinic.Unfortunately i took it after i got home and the back pain was killing me. I remember i was alone for the procedure and i got a taxi to go home and i even left the rest of the money to the taximan. I just wanted to be in bed

Thanks for the honesty even though it is scary. I appreciate it. You are so right, everybody is different. Maybe if I expect the worst it won't be so bad. Did you take any medication before the procedure?

Unfortunately for me this procedure was very painful. I remember having terrible back pain that i couldn't walk, and also had bleeding for a week as if a was having my period. But every body is different.

The procedure is more uncomfortable than painful. I just took 3 motrin before the procedure and I was fine. Just try to relax and take alot of deep breaths during the procedure. I only takes about 10 to 15 min.
