Menopur vs. Gonal-F for injectable IUI

I am about to start my 1st injectable IUI tomorrow. my RE originally recommand Gonal-F, but my NP ordered Menopur instead today after the scan. what is the difference between these two meds and is one better than the other? any input is greatly appreciated! also during today's scan (CD2) they found a 30mm cycst in my left ovary and my NP ordered blood test (E2) to see if I should wait out this cycle. according to my NP, as long as the cycst is not producing any hormone, it is OK to proceed the injectable treatment for this cycle. any thoughts on that? My NP will call me tomorrow to let me know the result. I just want to check with you ladies here to see if what my NP make sense. it is not that I don't trust her, but I've been given so many difference answer between my NP and RE and I don't know what to believe any more, and you girls here always give me lots of very useful information. many thanks!!

Hello,

I am in the same boat as you were. I had a 24" cyst on the left side; and my Infertility nurse did an estrogen test that is below 60. So she gave me menopur to inject for the coming weeks. Went for an ultrasound, and cyst is gone, also 3 good follicles on the right side and many small follicles on the left. Tomorrow, I will go through another ultrasound.

I'm sorry, I meant to say Follistim not menopur.  I did in fact use menopur too.

Hi, I have used both gonal-f and menopur, I understand they are the same basic ingrediants and they do the same.  I used gonal-f for my IUI cycles and menopur for my ist IVF cycle.  The Dr's said that some people did not like the Gonal-f pens - they worked fine I thought.  Also my insurance pays for some of my meds so that was another issue.
Gonal- was less expensive.  Menopur is cheaper if you have no insurance coverage from my understanding.  I had no side effects from either.  There is also more medication in the Menopur vials, there is more than the stated amount, so you can stretch it to more doses.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, scienceteacher79. I just got a phone call from my NP and my E2 is 39 on CD2 and she said it is OK to start the injection tonight. I will go in Monday for anohter scan to see if she needs to adjust the med. I am still a bit worry about the cyst. I've read somewhere else that any cyst that is larger than 10mm is a concern and most clinic would suggest to wait it out. I was put on bc pill last month to prepare for my IVF but my RE talked me out of IVF and recommend to give injectable a try before move on to IVF. doesn't bc pill suppose to suppress cyst and that is one of the reasons people take bc pill prior to IVF. anyway I will give it a try. my biggest concern is I only have 6 vial sperm left and I can't affort loosing more sperm if I know there might be some problems with the treatment.

sorry about your loss. best of luck on your next try.

I can't aswser anything about the gonal F or the cyst but I used the menopur (75 for 5 days) and got preggo the first time I used it - sadly we just miscarried but it at least worked to get me preggo :) I like the menopur and I would recommend it to anyone - doesn't hurt going in or anything. It was easy to do and easy to inject. Best of luck.
