Need advice on seeing a fertility specialist

I have  been trying to get pregnant for 6 months and have had 2 miscarriages before. My regular GYN thinks I do not need to see a fertility specialist just yet, because I got pregnant very easily for my previous 2 pregnancies. Given my age though(34), I am scared to wait too long. I was wondering how yu guys went ahead to visit a fertility specialist/ did your GYN reffered you, or you just decided to make the appointment?

Thanks

You are technically (as it is defined) not infertile since you have conceived. However, there is definitely an issue with carrying. I would see a specialist. There are many different causes for multiple m/c and many are easily remedied. When I m/c they tested the fetus for genetic problems. That is the #1 cause of m/c. However, some clotting disorders, lining issues and Luteal Phase defects can be the cause, too. I would look further into it. I know one poster had 6 m/c before her dr tested and it was a clotting disorder. With meds she conceived and had her baby girl 5 mos ago. Good luck!

Hi Lily - I went to a fertility specialist after I had been trying for a year.  My regular OB actually referred me to one at six months, but we waited for the year mark.  After an HSG, I got pregnant at one year and 3 months, only to miscarry at 5 weeks.  It then took me another 7 months before I finally got pregnant again after a Laporoscopy.  Luckily we didn't have to take fertility drugs, etc... but we were on the verge.  You are getting pregnant, so I'm sure that's why your doc won't refer you just yet.  However, it's YOUR choice.  If you believe you need to see one and are ready, make the appointment.

I now have a beautiful 4 month old baby girl!

Good luck to you.

Hi Lily,

I would suggest seeing a specialist if you have the chance. That is, if you have already had all of the tests you can get at your regular GYN. Six months is the norm for the amount of time ttc before seeing a specialist over the age of 35.  So technically, the doctor isn't going to push you to go yet.  Of course the older you are I don't think they say 6 months.  I'm 39 and I've been trying over 18 months unusuccessfull.  I got pregnant twice easily when I was younger also but I was told to hurry and see a specialist.  I still haven't seen one yet but I did get a hysteroscopy, MRI and all other blood tests done at the regular GYN.  I'm not going to see a specialist unless I'm ready to do IUI or IVF and that should be soon because time is wasting away.

Best of luck!
