Rapidly decreasing sperm count

Hi all.  The doctors forum is full at the moment - but I am hoping there are a few experts out there who can answer my question.  I am coming to the end of an IVF cycle - blood test on monday - I already have taken a couple of tests and they are negative.  I have no symptoms of pregnancy either - just an impending period - so I am expecting the worst on Monday.  ICSI was used as my husbands sperm count is low.  Last June 12 months the count was 30 mil, with about 15 mil mobile - which was low but not too bad.  Before christmas another test was done and it was less than 1 mill.  When he gave his sample for the IVF two weeks ago it was less than 100,000 and he was asked to give a second sample (God help him).  We got 2 good embryos which were transferred.  I have just turned 42 a week ago.  My husband is the same age.  He smokes - about 8 rollup cigarettes a day, drinks a couple of glasses of wine about 4 nights a week.  He works on computers all day, is reasonably fit - goes running at weekends for about an hour.  What is the cause of the rapid decline in sperm count and quality?  Is there anything he / we can do.  I am so anxious that this IVF cycle is our last chance at having a baby that we long for.  He went for a checkup about 8 months ago because he was feeling discomfort or a tightness in his testicles.  He had an ultrasound but they found nothing.  They prescribed antibiotics as a precautionary measure.  CAn anyone shed any light?  Thank you.

Ivf is too expensive and no guarantee, Iui had 2 of them so far both negative - Dr said we needed to think about donor sperm which is the direction we are heading right now... no there is nothing that he can do to increase the sperm count.  Just bad luck I guess.

Hi there and thanks for replying - is IVF and ICSI not an option for you?  DS means donor sperm right?  At this stage I am thinking about donor egg given my age - I hadnt considered that my husbands sperm could not be used.  We weren't given the breakdown of the sperm quality - so the picture could be worse than I think.  Do you have any idea what is causing your husbands declining sperm count?  Is there anything you can do?
Can anyone comment if my eggs are too old at 42 to try IVF again?  My 3D FSH level was 10.4 a couple of months ago.  Thanks.
