Tight cervix problems conceiving

Tight cervix problems conceiving

I have a very tight cervix for my age of 32.  I have gotten 2 confirmations now from 2 different doctors telling me the same thing.  Last year my Dr. opened my cervix with a small brush and I conceived within the month but then I had a miscarriage during the 8th week of pregnancy.  I have hypothyroidism and the Dr thought I miscarried because of the hypothyroidism.  It has been 6 months since miscarrying and I am going in to get my cervix dialated next week before I ovulate.  Is having my cervix dialated risky? Will I miscarry again because of the dialated cervix? Does the dialation hurt and can there be subsequent scarring? Thank you in advance for your answers!

Dear Caroline - It is very unlikely that a gentle dilation in the office will be harmful or that there will be subsequent scarring. I am not certain however that this will improve your chances for getting pregnant, and I am optimistic that you will be able to conceive since it has only been six months since your miscarriage. My belief is that, even with tight cervixes, if the cervix is open enough to permit menstruation every month, then it is open enough to allow for sperm to pass through to the uterus. Thus, unless you are planning intrauterine insemination or IVF and the cervix needs to be open enough to allow a catheter to pass through, I am not sure that the cervical dilation will be that beneficial, even though you conceived your miscarriage within a month of the dilation last year. Bottom line - the dilation is not likely to get you into trouble in the future, but I am not sure it is going to be that beneficial either. Good luck.
