questions about testing results

I asked you previously about what to ask my re about after I had my second miscarriage. Thank you for that response. Now, I just got my results back from my recurrent pregnancy loss panel and was hoping for your thoughts on what this means and possible treatment. The following things were tested: ACA, ANA, Karyotyping, Factor V Leidon Mutation, LAC, TSH, Protein S activity, Protein C activity, mthfr, prothrombin (factor 2), and antithrombin 3.

First, we found I am compound heterozygous MTHFR. Second, I am Protein S deficient because my level was only 29% (normal is greater than 60%). All other areas were within normal range, including karyotyping.

Can you give me a some information on these conditions? Could these conditions have been the cause of my two miscarriages at 6 weeks?

These results are best discussed with your REI. I would consider repeating the Protein S level - my experience has been that occasionally low results come up, and upon retesting the results come back normal. Thus, the low levels often reflect a false positive. However, if you are truly Protein S deficient, that may be a factor in your past miscarriages. I do not think that the heterozygote status for MTHFR is a major factor - this is a very common finding, present in over 10% of all of us. If it were a contributor to recurrent miscarriages, we would be hearing about women miscarrying 2-3 times much more frequently than we do.
