Hi,

I'm 22 with a 3 year old kid. I just got my copper IUD implant about 3-5 days ago, I'm experiencig itch on my genitals and I'm not sure if it's the plastic string that's causing it or what but it feels like something is hitting the walls of my genitals that makes it itch but I'm not sure. do you think it's an allergic reacton or just the splastic string? and if so can it be cut to prevent this from happening again?

thanks!

Hi!
It would be easy to be tested for anemia, and it would also be easy to start taking an iron supplement to prevent anemia.  Obviously neither is the solution you are looking for to the bleeding problem, I often recommend that my patients double up on their pills for several days until the bleeding stops--sometimes even triple the pills if necessary.  You might ask your provider if this would be an option for you--it usually works.  I would be remiss if I didn't recommend a pregnancy test--I ALWAYS recommend that whenever irregular bleeding occurs.
Another alternative would be to stop the pills and switch to the Mirena IUD --those work really well for many women with bleeding.
Good luck!
