Clomid and Injectables

I would like to start be saying thanks for all the support about the HSG test before hand every ones info was very helpfull and made me relax more....Well i had my HSG test  done on friday  ( it didn't hurt).Just a lil cramppingon saturday and thats it.. Every thing is fine tube's are open.. Dr wants to do provera clomid and injectables.. I started provera on friday on it for 10 days. then wait for af to show then i move on to the clomid and injectables. But my question is  has any done clomid and injectables?? The reason he wants to to the to is because my insurance doesnt cover the injectables so it would be cheaper with the clomid... And Does any one know how much cheaper? I get all my Meds At Walmart. If that helps any..  Any info would be good thanks..

P.S. - just to clarify, you would need the trigger shot (ovidrel/pregnyl/HCG) if you do the shots too and do IUI or IVF

I'm not really sure why doing both would make it cheaper?  Chances are, if injectables aren't covered, clomid probably isn't either.  It sounds extremely aggressive to me.  Injectables are like the end all be all - I don't think you need anything else with them, and clomid has more side effects than the shots.  Usually most docs do one or the other.  Most will make you start on clomid since its cheaper and easier, then move onto the shots during a completely different cycle if that doesn't work.  When I paid out of pocket for clomid it was hardly the price of the shots - $5 per pill.  It only added up during my fifth cycle on it when I was taking 5 pills a day for 5 days, but the injections can run $2000+ for just one cycle.

My only thought is maybe he meant clomid for stimulation and one HCG trigger shot to trigger ovulation?  You may want to clarify exactly what meds he's talking about - that would be very helpful.  In case he DOES want to do shots as well for ovarian stimulation...

My RE sent me to Freedom Pharmacy (they have a website freedomdrug.com) they supposedly have the best prices nationwide on fertility meds.  It's really easy - your doc just calls in the order, they call you to get payment, and they are overnighted and shipped directly to your door.  Their prices are right on the website.  Keep in mind for the Gonal-F for instance, which is what stimulates your ovaries to produce follicles (the same thing clomid does), most women use anywhere from 75-450 IU's a day, for on average 6-10 days.  How much and how long you're on them depends on how you respond - it's different for everyone.  I'd say the average dose is maybe in the 200's.  So if one pen is 300 IU and is $239, that may only be one day's worth of medication depending on your dose.  Maybe that's why he wants to do the clomid?  So you don't need as much stims?  But some women respond to very low doses - I used only 75 IU a day which is basically the minimum.  In addition to the stimulating shots, you will need something to prevent ovulation like lupron or menopur (you should only need this if you are doing the stim shots, not if you do clomid).  My lupron kit cost me about $250, but I was able to use it for several cycles.  There is also the ovidrel or pregnyl or HCG shot to trigger ovulation, and those run anywhere from $40-$80.  With ovidrel if you weigh over 175lbs you need two shots.  This you will need even if you are on clomid and do an IUI.

The other option is to ask about donated meds.  That's how I got most of my injectables from my RE - didn't pay a cent except for the lupron kit and once for the HCG shot.  Women with insurance coverage give new, unused stuff back and donate it to women who don't have insurance coverage.  It's definitely worth looking into.

I know this is all a bit confusing - I hope I didn't confuse you even more!  Let me know if you have any other questions.

Best of luck to you!

I was on Clomid + injectables (gonal F) this month. I live in India and here a pack of gonal F for this month ( my dosage was 50 x 4 + 75 x 2 ml) cost me 8000rs thats 160$. I did iui and the total cost came to apprx 400$. However I believe treatments here in India are a lot cheaper than US/UK.
