Cramps After IVF

My DH and I just had our first IVF w/ ICSI after 3 failed IUI's.  He has 100% abnormal sperm morphology. I'm 28 (turning 29 in a matter of weeks!) and everything seemed healthy with me.   I stayed down for 3 days following transfer and then worked from home on the 4th day.  Today is my 5th day post transfer and I have terrible cramps - they feel so much like a period.  Can someone tell me if this is a good or bad sign?  My blood test is on 5/11 which I know is only 5 days away but that feels like eternity to me!

I really want this to work.  How do you all handle the heart ache?  I am struggling and don't want to get my hopes up but I am so hopeful for a first time success.

I think all doctors are different.  Our first appointment was a consultation with the doctor just discussing IVF in general and letting me ask all of my questions.  We also went to a information class that our clinic had and picked up the packet with all of the information.  We got put on the IVF surgery calendar and all of our dates were based off of that.  I started birth control on the 3rd day of my period and then began Lupron shortly thereafter.  My husband had to go through an "IVF screen" and I had to do a mapping  (where they do a "mock transfer").  Also, if you haven't had a tube die test done they may also want to do that.

As I stook the stimulaton drugs we had 3-4 ultrasounds to monitor the growth of the follicles.  Once we realized the follicles were good size and there were enough of them (we had 8), we scheduled the egg retreival.  Our eggs were retrieved on April 27th and I had to stay home that day.  I had mild cramping but felt good afterward.  The eggs developed for 5 days and we transferred 2 eggs back on May 2nd.  We then had to wait until May 11th for our first blood test (which as you see above, has not been good news for us but we are staying positive).

Hope this helps!  I know its a tough process but the IVF process seems to move quickly!

KP73 - Congratulations!

LuckyCharm09 - Praying for you and for positive results!

On the bedrest issue, I talked to my doctor for a long time on the phone last night about oru low HCG level.  Our clinic advocates bedrest but he explained that is a very conservative viewpoint.  I stayed home for 3 days but he says that nothing I did would have caused the pregnancy to fail.  They like you to stay down, but they do not believe it truly has an effect on the outcome of the transfer.

It was torture for me to stay down for 3 days, but I did a pretty good job!  Finally on day 3 I did some work at my home computer.

Thank you all for your positive thoughts.  I am told that our numbers likely will not double but it is encouraging to hear that your doctor says anything over a 5 is positive.  We were told anything over a 3 is positive but that we are not likely to continue :-(  If that is the case, I think we will take a couple of months off and try again.

.Hey KP73, that is really exciting news. CONGRATS.  Dreamgirl hope your levels double and reach the required level. Keep positive,
I had my transfer today. I am going to take it easy for 3 days.my blood test is on 23rd which seems like an eternity away.
my doctor hasn't given me any progesterone. i had 1500 units of pregnyl (HCG) 2 days before transport and another 1500 units pregnyl one day after the transfer which is tomorrow. Did any oneelse not have Progesterone?

Just to make things more confusing... I was a HUGE advocate of bed rest. Once I stayed in bed for 6 days!!! Didn't work.  But I personally know two ladies, one who had no more than 1 day's bed rest, the other who had none... both travelled by plane within 2 days of their transfers and both got BFPs.
Also some doctors say a few hours, some say 1 day and some say 1 week of bed rest.  And others still say you're better off moving around (nothing major, just not total bed rest, walk around your house etc...) because movement helps the blood circulate which is good for implantation.  IN the end, I think you have to do what feels right for you.
Personally, I stuck with the bed rest but for 2 days only.  Third day I stuck to the bed for the most part but got up more often to get things for myself and that.  And after that, I just took it real easy.

Thanks for the good wishes - we do have good news and got a BFP!  Am now praying that is stays...I'm still pretty crampy...

DreamGirl0624 - My prayers are with you - hopefully the HCG levels will bounce up.  My RE told me that anything over a 5 was a pregnancy and that the most important thing is that it starts to double every 48 hours.  Good luck on Wednesday!

(BTW - I took my first HPT at 8 days post 5-day transfer)

LuckyCharm09 - good luck with the transfer!  I stayed more or less on bed rest for 3 days after the transfer (rented a LOT of movies).  If you can stay lying down, I think it can't hurt.  I know its harder if you have to go back to work soon after or have other little ones to look after.

Well, the call for me today wasn't great.  I have a positive result but my HCG levels are WAY to low.  Only a 8.5 and they want it at a 50 right now so it looks like we are going to miscarry.  I am going back in on Wednesday and praying for a miracle but understaning the realities.

Thanks for all the support and hoping you all get BFP's on your first try!

I had the same story as you, I took HPT  5 days after transfer it was negative, then I took one 7 days past transfer and I had two bright red lines - positive. I also had some craming few days after transfer.  I'm  now 7 months pregnant with twins b/g after first IVF.

Thank you all for your posts and words of encouragement.  I think this is a good way for me to get out what I am feeling, but not drive my DH crazy.  It's amazing, I have kept to myself through this entire process and finally had to talk to someone yesterday and came here.

Thanks again - it means the world to me!  Fingers crossed for blood test on May 11th!

KP73 - sending prayers your way for May 10th!

Congrats on the positives on the HPT!  I promised myself I wouldn't take an HPT and of course I broke down last night.  It was a negative but I am hoping that since it was only 5 days after the transfer, that it doesn't mean much.  When was your earlest positive test?

Glad to know the cramping could be normal.  Today is 6 days post transfer and I am really cramping.  I just wish I could control the anxious/stress side of it because I know that it isn't helping anything.

Absolutely, cramping can be quite normal.  I wish you luck and I know what it's like (as many here do, I am sure) to desperately want the first try to work.  I hope it does work for you but just keep in mind that if it doesn't, it doesn't mean a thing and there is no reason why the next one won't work a charm.  Hope you don't have to find out but after my first try didn't work, I was devastated.  Particularly because, like you, there was nothing 'wrong' with *me* so when it didn't work, I was shocked and confused and all sorts.
The very best of luck to you... lots of people do get a BFP first try... I hope you're one of them.

I had cramping about 4 days after 3 day transfer and I got my bfp.  It's pretty common in early pregnancy.

Good luck to you all.

I had a ton of cramping from right after the egg retrieval. The doctor said that this is normal and that as your ovaries heal your uterus will expand, so it may continue for a while.

It sounds like we are going through exactly the same thing!  My blood test in on 5/10 and I'm having a lot of cramping and pains as well.  I looked it up on various websites and they say that cramping is normal as it means your uterus is starting to stretch and get ready for the pregnancy.  Mine feel like the cramps I get with my period, but I'm hopeful that it is still a good sign.  I've taken two home preg tests that both came back positive, so I'm cautiously optimistic.
