18 dpo too soon to test?

Hi, I am at about 18 dpo right now. I ovulated on the 12 of september with a high soft cervix and egg white cervical mucus. I had sex on the 10th and the 12th. About 7dpo i had some slight cramping which lasted about 2 days. At about 14 dpo i started having nausea and it hasnt gone away still, but it isnt as severe. My periods arent completely regular yet (after being on birth control for 3 years), so i dont know how long my luteal phase would normally be, however my cervix is still high, but not soft or firm, and i think it is closed.
I took a pregnancy test yesterday and got a negative result. could i be testing too soon?

or what else could possibly be going on?

thank you :)

Try a first response early detection HPT if you haven't already done so. Best of luck.
