Normal dose for metformin would be somewhere between 500 - 1500 mg/day, in divided doses.
Usually you have to start on just 1/4 or 1/2 of the 500 mg tablet as it can cause temporary tummy upset in some.
It appears to be a safe drug for most people from what I've read. However, I cannot recommend that you take it without supervision of a doctor. So far better you convince your doctor to let you use it, or change doctors to one who will let you use it and will monitor you appropriately.
Hi,
metformin is a tried and proven way of treating PCOS. In many cases it normalises fertility such that drugs like clomid are no longer necessary.
IF your doctor won't allow you to use it, perhaps you should change doctors.
Please work hard to lose weight and improve your fitness, which will also increase your chances for a healthy pregnancy.
As people with PCOS sometimes also have thyroid problems, now would be a good time to screen to make sure your thyroid is normal. Ask them to test TSH, FT3 and FT4. TSH target for pregnancy is 1 - 2. FT3 and FT4 should optimally be middle of the reference range or better.
I have found the best way for me to lose weight is to adopt a low carb diet. I have thyroid issues, diabetes and PCOS, and without using a low carb diet weight loss is nearly impossible. You may wish to research this further.
In addition, do your very best to get at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise a day (brisk walking, if nothing else) as exercise can also help a great deal for people with PCOS.
Let us know how you go.
I am very sorry to hear of your miscarrage, my heart goes out to you. I think it's very wise of you to research other options and take control by losing a little weight and being as healthy as possible bc let's be honest pregnancy is a strenuos time on the body. I would stand firm with your doctor that this is something you would like to try bc it's your health and your potential pregnancy that you are trying to protect! Your doctor will understand just present it as something you want instead of an option you know. And if the doctor is still against giving it a shot I suggest getting a new doctor. I would not take anything without the supervision of a trained medical professional and I would have to advise against doing so. I wish you the best of luck sweetie BB
