Random Non-Period Bleeding?

What is going on with my body?
AF came Jan 2, lasted 5-6 days, came again Jan 30, lasted 5-6 days.  Now, for the past week or so, I've been having pretty bad back pain (back pain isn't uncommon, but I've been doing a lot better until recently).  Feb 10 I went to the bathroom and had some spotting.  Pink/brown with a little thread-like discharge.  Started having some mild cramping as well.  Not heavy, mostly brownish, and that night it nearly stopped.  Next afternoon, it was spotting again with very small clots.  Like, smaller than a pea, and I usually clot pretty bad (sorry for the TMI).  Stopped again in the late evening so I thought I was clear to have sex with my husband.
After sex with my husband, when I went to the bathroom I had red blood.  Not a LOT, but a fair amount.  Not enough to bother using any clothing protection, but enough to catch me off-guard for sure.  I am still bleeding today, but it has gone from mostly red back to mostly brown, but there is still more than there was the past two days, but still not enough to worry with pads/pantyliners.
I'm just very confused.  I'm not clockwork regular with my cycles, but I'm usually pretty close, as in within a few days, though my cycles are usually about 30 or so days.  This is too soon for me to be having another period, but I don't see any other explanation really.  Except this isn't exactly like a period.
I'm just so confused.  WHAT is my body doing?

Thanks!  I believe I did have a fibroid noted in an ultrasound when I was pregnant with my son 5 years ago, but the doctors brushed off any concerns I had about it so I had forgotten.  I plan on making an appointment as soon as my insurance changes.  The company my husband works for was bought out at the end of 2010 and we're supposed to be switching over to their insurance in March.  Don't want to make an appointment that needs any follow-up until I get the insurance straight.
Oh, and I have had my thyroid checked many years ago, as I suspected that was the cause of some other problems I was having, but the doctor always told me I was in the normal range.  Definitely wouldn't mind having it checked again and at least find out what my numbers are.  Maybe I'll get lucky and find a doctor that actually listens to my concerns.  Haven't had one of those in a while..

Sorry, I hit "Post" when I meant to add to my response.  Sometimes a polyp or a fibroid can also cause mid cycle bleeding.  I was treated for this 10 years ago.  Fibroids and polyps can be on stalks, that can move around and upset the endometrium lining - causing some bleeding. Ovulation can cause mid cycle bleeding, but i'm not sure you would see clots.  Definitely worth a call to the Dr.  Best to you.

I don't want to freak you out, because it's easily treatable, but sometimes mid cycle spotting can be due to hyperthyroid, have you ever had that checked?  I would call the Dr as it couldn't hurt to have a blood test to rule this out.  Good luck this cycle!!

Thanks!  I was afraid to BD again after I bled afterwards Valentine's night.  I've had irregular cycles most of my life without BC, but they haven't been very off since I had my son almost 5 years ago.  They've been between 28-32 or so days long, but this is probably the first time I've ever had spotting between periods.  It is the first time I remember for sure.  Think we may BD tonight anyway just in case, it just worried me because it has never happened before and it kinda freaked me out.
Thanks again!

Many women get mid-cycle spotting, especially around the time of ovulation.  If it's so light you don't need to use a panty liner, then I would consider it ovulation spotting.  If you're TTC, now is a perfect time to BD!  GL!

I just realized I put Feb 10 in the OP.  Not sure why I did that or how I missed it, but it was the 13th, not the 10th.  Today there is barely any spotting at all.
