Scared to try agian...

I had surgery to remove an ectopic pregnancy July 30, 2007, they were able to save my tube the doc said if i had waited another day it would have ruptured (I was 7 weeks, 1 day). I had some bleeding Aug 4 almost like a normal period but I thought it was from the surgery, could it have been my first period that soon. I had a Normal period Sept 12 and it has been consistent. My doc told me to wait two cycles before I try again, but I wanted to wait three just to make sure. They said it could have been caused from me being a smoker before I found out I was pregnant, so I haven't picked smoking back up since I lost the baby. My fiance and I are anxious to try again, but of course I am scared to death that it will happen again. It was especially devastating because I saw and heard the heartbeat, and it was fluttering around. I just can't get that moment out of my head.

Was that first bleeding in Aug a period or just from surgery? Do you ovulate alternating one side to the next? Is it possible to keep track so that you can try to avoid concieving after ovulating from the side that the ectopic was on? What is the chance of it happening again? So you think that because I have changed my lifestyle that I would have a better chance than average of a normal pregnancy? Any thoughts?

My RE told me that you don't alternate it's completely random.  I asked, because one of my tubes were blocked.
