Ultrasound shows I'm approx. 3 weeks pregnant--Dr. thinks I just haven't miscarried yet

I'm confused. The first day of my last period was 8/31. It lasted the normal 5 days.  This was also my 1st round with Clomid.  I took the clomid days 3-7 of my cycle.  Today, 9/11, I went for an ultrasound and it shows that I did ovulate and they also found "what appears" to be a pregnancy--it showed bloodflow around it, etc...  HOWEVER, the doctor said that the ultrasound shows it would be 3 weeks pregnant.  She believes that it is a pregnancy that just never terminated on its own.  She ordered bloodwork to check the hormone levels both today and in two more days to see the variance.  I have two concerns and questions---if I were 3 weeks pregnant and the pregnancy just didn't take and isn't "active" currently---why didn't the home pregnancy test I was told to take prior to taking the clomid show positive? and why would I Have had a completely normal period at the end of August if I would have been "pregnant" at that time?

The next question is----if the ultrasound shows I DID ovulate (which was my whole reason for the dr visit--to see if the clomid had worked)---what's to say that the egg released didn't just recently become the start of a pregnancy and if it were just a few days after fertilized--it wouldn't show at all at this point?   Can you still "get pregnant" while having a pregnancy that your body still is in the process of terminating?

I'm sure the HCG bloodwork today and a few days from now will explain a lot.......I'm just a bit stumped at how all this is playing out.  Obviously---it is very emotional to be told you are not pregnant, you are pregnant, then you are but it isn't active and the baby just hasn't terminated along with everything else above!

Thanks in advance for any insight into this chaos that you can provide! It just doesn't make sense...

May I join in too, I have had a similar experience while I was put on Clomid the 1st time - the PG was called blighted - and I did get my AF and it showed two PG's - but then I had to have a D&C as I started to bleed after missing my AF for a month and showing positive PG - So it does happen, and I have also had periods while I was pg for 5wks! I was told by my then Dr, that it does happen when you take Clomid. Simply like to share my expereince, thanks for hvng me on board!

The second beta results showed 8132!  We go in this next Wed for another ultrasound.  The dr. surprisingly said this time that she thinks the blood levels are good indicators...but you are right...the hcg does seem high.  It's hard to believe I am over 3 weeks pregnant..but I guess stranger things have happened.  We'll find out more next week.  I don't even want to get into the possibility of twins.  :)  lol  Fingers crossed....lifes full of ups and downs to the extreme.

for 3 weeks the 5147 seems high. . . if you look at americanpregnancy.org it shows that the norm for 3 weeks is 5-50. . . So maybe you are further along or something. The second beta should tell you more because you can see if it went up or down. Good luck will everything.

First beta results show 5147....I get the 2nd set back tomorrow.  Does anyone know what the 5147 means?  They said from the ultrasound I was 3 weeks--is that where it should be? thx.

I don't know of anyone but my Dr. said there is no harm in it if it happens.....so I'd say you're ok.

Another thought---since I shouldn't be thinking...haha.  Does anyone know of someone that took clomid while unknowingly pregnant?  Should everything be okay with the pregnancy, I'm a bit concerned that could be our NEXT worry.  I know you SHOULDN"T take it while pregnant...but how serious could it be?

I get the beta results back on Friday.  I guess we will know more then.  I'm trying to stay positive and not let the "what ifs" get to me too much...but it sure is difficult! :)  One day at a time...that's all we can do.

When will you get your beta results back?  Maybe you O late and are currently having a healthy pregnancy.....is this possible?  Some women do have AF while pregnant.  I did with my first pregnancy.....and my mother throughout her whole pregnancy with me.....don't give up yet.....please....

I have to admit---I certainly didn't expect such a great response!  THANK YOU SO MUCH!  Sometimes just having others to share this with while you are pushing forward makes a world of difference in your coping skills.  :)  The unknown wait is the worst!  I can deal with facts--but when there are no facts to work with---VERY DIFFICULT!    I truly appreciate the stories shared.  Especially KellyH.  It does provide some hope.  Tomorrow the 2nd beta test...Friday the results.  While it may not give all the answers I need in this case---at least it will be something to work with!  I don't think just anyone can understand what it is like to function day in/day out with the thought of a potential dead sac/embryo inside your body.  Your mind plays such tricks on you as well...you can't help but to worry about the slightest pain in your abdominal area.

On to better days!  :)  THANKS SO MUCH!!!  You are ALL a blessing...

hi - i am still relatively new at ttc so sorry I cant help you with much information but I thought Id share a nice similar story. I think anything positive is good for the soul and makes us all restore hope that we sometimes let slip away for a moment (me included!)
The same sorta thing happen to my mum. Both of my brothers were actually twins (seperate pregnancies though). Both pregnancies the twins came away though as they did not form properly or something. I was only 14 or 15 so I dont remember the specifics, although I know mum was devestated as she thought she had lost her 2 babies but then both times.... surprise.... they discovered there was still a strong heartbeat in there both times - To this day mum still feels a 'presence' of more children sometimes around my brothers and at christmas etc.... My bro's are now 10 and 18 and they too feel they have a shadow sometimes. Isnt it nice to think that it could be. That even if you loose a child it will still be with you for life. . .
Thanks sorry i got carried away
ssbd to all xx

Well, here's my story.... I went in w/a + pregnancy test and spotting. had hcg test 270, hcg #2 was420, hmmm not doubling. Sent me in for ultrasound... Sorry you have a 7 1/2 week old sac dead right outside the top of your cervix, you will miscarry :( I knew that couldn't be right because 3 days before the + test I got a - test...Grrrr .. More beta's going up, more beta's going up. Ultrasound #2 same thing 7 1/2 week old sac, dead. More #'s and then scheduled D&C. Because my numbers were not dropping they did 1 last ultrasound the morning of the D&C, and there in the Uterus was a new bean. I had not miscarried the other baby before I got pregnant w/my new one.  It was NOT a twin that died, it was 2 seperate pregnancies... Just a glimmer of hope, it does happen!  Not often, but does happen. I soo hope this is the case w/you!!  DUST***

I am so sorry you are going through all of this. I had an mc last year I know how you are feeling. I really wish there was something I could tell you to ease your pain. Just like poupoune said, remember you did get pregnant and that is a very good thing. That is only thing that has given me strength to continue. I am well into my second year of ttc and I won't stop until I get that baby.
Best of luck too and know that we are all here for you!!!

I'm sorry, I don't have anything useful to tell you..just to hang in there and remember that it is a good thing that you did get pregnant. Hopefully the doctors will have some explanation as to what happened exactly.
