what to expect from a hsg test?

so af arrived today ;( no baby for us in 2011 then. I was so hoping to have a baby in December, especially since my daughter's birthday is Dec 12. Guess not. This is our 8th month ttc. I'm losing all hope. My doctor scheduled me for hsg test cd 10. What should I expect, is it painful? What if my tubes are closed, what is only 1 is, and what if they are open, what are the usual next steps? Do you spot a lot after, should I wear a pad afterwards?
Thanks for your help. I'm actually excited (and scared) for this test, at least we'll know something and go from there!
Why is creating life so diffucult?

I had it and it wasn't painful, they said both my tubes are blocked, so we are seeing a fertility specialist, who will, most likely, do a laparoscopic procedure to open them up. So I will definitely not get pregnant as a result of my hsg test :(

I just had it done today, and for me it hurt. I took 660 mg of naproxen before hand, (ibuprofen makes me bleed). Pain is different for everyone, just do what I did. Close your eyes, breathe, and picture yourself holding your baby. I also had to take antibiotics and prednisone before hand and for the next five days. No sex for two days after, and then go like rabbits. My doc said that there is a very slight increase in fertility, but that depends on what your problems are. If they suspect blocked tubes, then the HSG will help to flush the "junk" and open the tubes. In my case they were evaluating for a sptate uterus, in which case the HSG will have little to no effect on fertility. Oh, and if your tubes are blocked, they open them right then and there with tubal catheterization (sp?), or at least that is what my doctor does. (I only know because I had to sign a waiver for it.) Good Luck, and just keep picturing your future baby!!!!

It wasn't painful for me - just like a pap - smear.  I'm sure it's different for everyone.  I did take advil, though.

thanks guys, my dr told me to take 2 advil, but I think I'll take something stronger ;) I went through labor and c-section, so I know pain, but I heard that when you're nervous, your tubes can spasm and show blocked even when they really aren't.
I'm sooo hoping this will help me get preggo, my dd (4) keeps asking for a little brother/sister and it breaks my heart  every month.

Hi there!   For me personally it was painful.  I wasn't told of the tylenol or Ibuprofren before hand so I'm assuming that would've helped.  Also, I found out then that I have cervical stenosis so therefore they had to try two different times with the catheter ..and the dye twice. That was painful.  After they get everything in place and started injecting the dye I cramped some.  I cramped the rest of the day but it wasn't anything major. They offered me a pad but you might want to take your own because they usually only offer the "BIG BOATS". Lol.  Sorry....just the really big, thick ones.  You won't need it that thick.  I'd take a panty liner.  I didn't bleed or spot but some of the dye comes back out.  I'm not sure about the tubes being blocked or anything like that, but I would assume your next step IF they were blocked would be to have a laparoscopy.  Yout dr. will tell you everything after it's all over with and they know the results.  I've been trying for 8 yrs now and no luck yet.  I wish you the absolute best!!   Good luck hun, let us know how things go!! :)

Lucky you! I mean getting to get the test! I hear it depends on the person, take a few tylenol before you go in for the test, also I've heard that there is a big chance following the HSG that you will become pregnant, all my friends who hae had it have become pregnant almost immediately after the test. good luck
