SOD is Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction. A yahoo or Google search will bring up lots of interesting reading. The sphincter of oddi muscle is at the opening where the bile duct and pancreatic duct meet and drain into the duodenum. When sphincter of oddi dysfunction is present, the muscle does not contract properly causing backup of bile and pancreatic juices and causing severe pain in the right upper quadrant or left upper quadrant or center (where the ribs split). Usually people have this when the gallbladder is already removed. Although some get it before their gallbladder is removed too.
Can you have SOD if the gall bladder has already been removed?
Hi, whats SOD exactly? I had Endoscopy done a week ago and learned that I have the H. pylori bacteria and a puddle of bile sitting on top of my stomach. This all started after my gallbladder removal in January. I've been put on 3 different meds. I'm praying it clears up my stomach. I had no clue it was my actual stomach giving me the problems since my pain is still in the upper right quadrant. Go figure? lol....
If something doesn't show up on the MRI, then strongly consider Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction. I have had it for 6 years, since my gallbladder surgery. My attacks started a couple of hours after my surgery and I was told (for the next 2-4 years ) that it was IBS or acid reflux. SOD is EXTREMELY painful and yes, you do vomit green bile and run fevers and have horrid pain. It just gets worse with time and it also involves the pancreas and liver. If anyone wants to know of a doctor who specializes in SOD just post. Good Luck.

Please keep your post updated with your progress. I have a very similar situation as you. I have had 3 surgeries, one being a gall bladder removal. I had been fine for 9 months, however, the past 2 months I have been in constant pain and nausea. I have had 7-8 episodes where I have gotten sick many times through out the day (green bile) and have ended up in the ER. This week they actually pumped out additional bile after all the times I had gotten sick! The first GI Dr. said I had IBS and perscribed meds that did not help. I got a second opinion and found that I now have sores in my stomach from vomiting and gastroparisis (from gastric empty study). X-rays and CAT scan did not show obstruction, however, I have been told a partial obstruction may not show. It is challenging trying to get a good DR to solve problems like this. They all say...I don't know...must be cronic pain...what a joke. GoodLuck.
Hi all, I just wanted to let anyone or everybody out there know that I went into the hospital two Sunday's ago with my complaints I initially posted. The hospital said my blood work came back fine and all my xray showed was that I was full of poop. BUT! I had another violent episode this passed Friday of throwing up liver bile and boiled over in excruciating pain. I just dealt with it and didn't go to the hospital. I'm very tired of being told it's just phantom pains. My temp is now a 102, my upper right side is aching, but not excruciating at this time. I have no appetite, and I've lost 6lb.s But, my tummy looks as tho I'm 7 months pregnant. So, I took it upon myself to march into my General doc's today and tell him, something wrong, very wrong. He ordered my labs and xray from my visit to the hospital two Sundays ago and indeed it showed an inflamed Pancreas, elevated liver enzymes and protein in my blood. I have no clue why this wasn't disclosed to me, let alone being released from the hospital. My doctor immediately scheduled me for a MRI tomorrow at 12:30. He's guessing that the bile duct which is shared from the liver, pancreas and gallbladder is blocked. I no longer have a gallbladder so somethings obviously up with the other two organs. I just want people out there to know not to give up on seeking medical attention. Doc's are so quick to hand out painkillers and nausea meds, but imo that's no way to live. If anybody reads this, please don't settle and never give up. : )
On a final note, thank you to the Doctor who reads these posts and posts your opinion. You've helped me so much!
Typically the symptoms should subside 5-6 months out form surgery. If there continues to be symptoms, you may want to consider either a bile duct stone or Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction. You can consider a fatty meal ultrasound and/or ERCP with Spincter of Oddi manometry for further evaluation.
Regarding the constipation - if it continues, a flexible sigmoidoscopy can be considered to ensure there isn't any masses present that is obstructing the stool.
An elevated CRP suggests that there is inflammation present - either an infection, injury, or inflammatory disease. By itself, it isn't helpful, but it should be used in conjunction with a physician's clinical opinion to narrow down the list of possibilities.
Followup with your personal physician is essential.

I think waiting is too dangerous, especially if you think you are obstructed......you could make matters worse and end up with complications....maybe your surgeon could fit you into his schedule or at least see your pcp....good luck
have they done any abdominal xrays? you could have a partial obstruction causing these symptoms.......see your surgeon to get this checked out
Thanks for responding, I'm feeling real obstructed right about now. I guess I'm trying to hang on till Monday when I see my G.I. I figure if I get a fever or have one more episode of vomiting I will head to the E.R. I have a little temp of 100. right now but I'm still managing. I have 3 kids, I'm a Realtor and I take care of my mother who has Ovarian Cancer. Life is just too busy to get sick right now. But, what do ya do ya know? lol
