Atypical Glandular Cells

Atypical Glandular Cells

I am 47 year old who just had the first abnormal PAP smear ever.  It came back with atypical glandular cells, but I tested negative to HPV.  I had a colopscopy yesterday and was told no cells at the cervix turned white as was expected and a endometrial biopsy was done.  I should have the results in 4 weeks.  What should I expect next?

Hi!
Why on earth does it take so long to get results?  We usually have results of a biopsy within 2 days!  They are doing the correct procedures for you and in the correct order.
If you were my patient and your biopsy was negative, I would consider a LEEP procedure to remove a portion of your cervix for diagnosis.  This might not be necessary, and could be deferred for awhile.  If your biopsy is positive, it will probably show some type of endometrial hyperplasia.  There are basically two types of hyperplasia---one without atypical cells, that can be treated with hormone therapy.  And one with atypical cells that is usually treated with hysterectomy because it is considered pre-cancerous.
Indeed, many times cancer is found in the uterus when the hysterectomy is done.
Whatever happens, as long as you follow your doctors instructions carefully, you will not end up with cancer.
I hope this helps!
Good luck!
