Polyp in Uterus

I have had excessive bleeding with my periods since I was a teenager.  Recently my OBGYN suggested the Novasure procedure.  In the process he found a polyp in my uterus.  I am now scheduled for a D&C and Novasure procedure this Friday.  What are your thoughts on having both done?  I am becoming very nervous about the Novasure procedure.

Approximately 4 days ago I had an HTA procedure done due to abnormal/excessive bleeding. I am now experiencing breast and nipple tenderness as if my cycle is about to begin, is this normal?

Prior to the procedure I was prescribed a synthetic form of progestrone to thin the lining as much as possible (which was taken for approx. 2 weeks), and I was prescribed Cytotec to soften the cervix (taken the night before and the morning of the procedure).

Your feedback is appreciated.

Hello,

Novasure is one form of endometrial ablation that is effective at improving symptoms of excess menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) and in some women will result in absent menses.  Other forms of endometrial ablation are equally effective in the right hands (rollerball ablation, cryoablation, hydrothermal ablation, and thermachoice ablation are others).  Additionally, the Mirena IUD can be used for this indication as well.

If you have had a benign endometrial biopsy and have completed child bearing the procedure proposed by your ob/gyn is very reasonable.  If you are uncertain I would encourage you to seek a second opinion.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing
