started provera

I am 28 years old and was recently diagnosed with a very small fibroid.  I recently came off bc pills in February after taking for over 10 years.  Since stopping i have been spotting on and off for months in between period.  My doctor does not believe the spotting is caused by the fibroid since it is very small so he put me a dose of provera for 10 days then told me I would get my period, count another 15 days once period starts and take another dose for 10 days.  I took the first dose and have on and off spotting (last dose 10 days ago) but no period.  I have another appt to go back.  Can anyone give me some answers on what the spotting may be from, or why i have not had a period since i took dose of provera, i thought the point of the provera was to bring on your period once you stopped the medication.  also wanted to add that while on first dose of provera i did not spot at all so it did help. Please help!!

Hello,

Did you have irregular periods before you were started on the pill?  If so it would be normal to have irregular bleeding now you are back off of it.  That said, any woman who is having irregular bleeding, as you describe, should be worked for pregnancy, a thyroid (TSH) or prolactin abnormality, polycystic ovarian syndrome and given you did not bleed after taking provera, premature ovarian failure.  Another thing to consider is having been on the pill for ten years I suspect the lining of your endometrium (the inner lining of the uterus that sheds to result in menstrual flow) is really thinned out and atrophic.  This can at times cause irregular bleeding.  None of this is related to the small fibroid.

An evaluation by your gyn will be very helpful in sorting out the cause of your symptoms.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing

I was on depo for five years! I never had a period after the second dose. I can tell you that I went to the doctor numerous times and they always did a pap and said everything is normal sometimes women dont have periods on depo some women do. I can also say that I have been off of depo for now a year and three months and barely got my period!!! That med. really is weird!
