Bleeding for 3+ Months, Provera Didn't Help - What now?

I've had a milky white foul smelling discharge since I was pregnant with my first son in 2004. The first TWO GYN's I went to, said that it was OK to live with, and the second one suggested acidophilus vitamins.

My periods have always been irregular, but after my c-section of my second son in december 2008, they became somewhat regular (just maybe off by a week). Well I had regular periods in September and October, but NO period in November and December. (This was a stressful time, because of the wedding in November)

January 1st 2010, I started bleeding. The clots were as large as my palm, and it was really strange. Its like there were more clots than there was blood. I would have to change my pad every half hour. This went on for nearly two weeks. Then it changed to a medium flow, like a normal period for nearly 2 months.

On April 1st, after vaginal intercourse, I bled VERY heavily. It was very thin, bright red. I thought maybe I got my period finally. After inserting a tampon, by the time I went down the stairs, it was dripping out all down my leg. Completly freaked I went to the Dr.

She gave me Provera, and that stopped the bleeding. April 7th, On the 7th day (I had 10 days of pills to take) I went in for a check up. She gave me a quick physical vaginal exam like a pap and checked my uterus with her fingers. Then, once I got home, I started bleeding again, though this time it was mucousy. It's almost ALL mucus.

I continued with my pills, and on the 10th day, I finally stopped bleeding. Then my husband and I had vaginal intercourse again on the 11th, and I started to bleed again. It's much lighter than before, but it's nearly all bloody mucus. It's still going on this day, the 16th of April. It's medium flow, I still need a good padded pad.

What could be going on?? Can I ask for specific tests, because I don't have a lot of money, it costed me $550 at planned parenthood for all the tests and exams last time (they dont offer financial help)

And I forgot to mention, that I did start birth controll pills, Trivora to be exact. I am on my 8th day of the pills, however I am still bleeding like I did when it first started back in January. Do you think taking a month of pills would help? I made an appointment though because it's exactly how it was when my bleeding first started .. like Provera had just restarted it lol

Thank's for your feedback Elaine. I will kindly request the nurse at  Planned Parenthood give me an ultrasound. She just seemed really stumped last time, hehe. I made an appointment for Thursday.

The mucus has turned into clots, and is basically acting like it did when I first started bleeding. Large clots, lots of blood. I have to change my pad every 15 minutes.

Do you know if taking Provera or my Gyno problems would have any impact on my gallbladder or liver or anything in that area? I don't know if it's related, but ever since I took Provera I have had very bad pain near my gallbladder area. Not to say it IS my gallbladder it's just in that area. It hurts to breath, and even move. I can't lay down or sleep because it hurts so bad. But again, I don't have insurance and the ER was not able to help me.

The chest pain is on my right, under the bottom couple ribs, and when I press there it's very very tender - almost as if I was bruised (But no physical bruise on the outside) However just recently, it's started to hurt on my back, too. It's just constant pressure, like as if it was swollon... it hurts really bad.

Hi!
It sounds to me as though you may have endometrial hyperplasia, or at least a very thickened uterine lining.  This can develop after several months of irregular periods.
If you were my patient I would want to do a transvaginal ultrasound to evaluate the uterine lining--I would want to see how thick it is and also I would want to look for polyps within the lining which could cause similar problems.

If the lining looked very thick I would consider an endometrial biopsy if you are over 35, or have other risk factors for uterine cancer.

The treatment for polyps is a D&C.  For hyperplasia the treatment is usually Provera.
Once the Provera has cleaned out the lining, oral contraceptives can be used to keep it from building up again.

I hope this helps!
