Bleeding in between periods

Hi,
I've recently been bleeding on and off, my last period was about three weeks ago and lasted a little over a week.
Two days ago I was bleeding a little, the next day there was nothing, then yesterday I was bleeding a bit more and today there is nothing again.
I'm quite worried as I have always had regular periods and this hasn't happened before.
Can you please tell me, is this normal and what's causing it? What can I do?
Thanks, Kate

Thank you I have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow about something else anyway so I will mention it to him.
The bleeding has stopped now haven't had anything for two days now so I'm hoping that will be the end of it. It is not common for me to have irregular periods, and I'm 23.
I have recently lost weight and have been under a bit of stress, so I'm glad you mentioned that!
Thank you for easing my worries a little.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi!
Its probably time to schedule a check up with your doctor.  If you were my patient, I would probably start with a Pap smear, pelvic exam, pregnancy test, and possibly an ultrasound.  Depending upon the findings, I would probably treat with progesterone.  I like to use Prometrium, although Provera also works fine.
I would also ask you a few more questions, like is this common for you to have irregular periods, and how old you are.  Irregular bleeding is usually caused by failure to ovulate regularly which can be caused by many things: stress, weight changes, PCOS, polyps, peri-menopause, to name a few.
Give your doctor a call to get this all sorted out.  Its UNLIKELY to be serious, but should be sorted out.
Good luck!
