Pain in left side when ovulating

For the past several months whenever I ovulate from my left side I have pain that doubles me over.  I can't stand and nothing makes the pain better unless I lay down on my left side, taking all pressure off.  I have always been able to feel myself ovulate only from that side, but it has never caused me any pain.....it only last a day, but I am in a lot of pain that whole day.  What is the problem and do I need to make an appointment with my doctor?
Thanks so much for your help.

Hello,

Yes, I think you should discuss this with your physician.  If your symptoms are only with ovulation and don't last beyond a day you can talk to your physician about using a pain medication that may provide you some relief.

Also, if indeed your symptoms are due to ovulation, birth control such as the pill/nuvaring/patch or depo provera should improve your pain as these medications suppress ovulation.  Talk to your doctor about your options.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing
