Copper IUD and late period

I've had a copper iud put on after an abortion in mid october. i got my period on 12th november, that one was very heavy and lasted for about 8 days, i am usually on a 28 day cycle previously.  It's already 18th december and i dont think i have my full period yet, as i only had a bit of bleeding occured on 16th, slightly more on 17th and still very light today.  I haven't had sex since 10th November.  should i go see a doctor, and if not, when should i consider seeing one?  what could be wrong, if anything, with me?

Hello,

I suggest you take a home pregnancy test.  If negative, repeat it in one week.  If positive you'll need to visit your physician immediately.  With an IUD in place there is an increased risk of having an ectopic pregnancy. That can be a life threatening condition.  If you experience any abdominal pain or nausea/vomiting you should call your doctor's office right away.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing
