Going nuts

Dr. HHH,

This probably sounds like all the others but I hope you will give me a response.  I was involved with a girl from May of 2006 to the end of July.  We had unprotected sex several times during those months.  She stated she did not have any STDs.  During the last week of July I started feeling very ill. I had a horribly white, hairy looking tongue.  I confronted her about this and she stated she might have something and then broke off the relationship...OUCH....

This sent me into a tail spin. I had vomiting, sore throat, diarrhea, aching muscles, headaches (basically every symptom of ARS in the worst case).  I went to the ER on August the 8th with kidney problems due to not eating and freaking out.  I was in bad shape and they attributed it to a gastro infection.  I figured it was ARS.  I got out of the ER and got tested for HIV and hep B,C on Sept the 12th, about 5 weeks after ER and 6 to 7 weeks after exposure to the girl I was with...These tests came back negative.  I still feel very bad and unable to get any cooperation from the girl.  I have tested for HIV on Oct the 2nd which is 8 weeks since ER visit this test was also negative.

These tests were blood draws sent to LabOne by my doctor. I was curious any Idea what generation test they might use and what you think of my situation.  If Aug 8th ER visit was due to ARS wouldn't the Oct HIV test have shown something. Any advice or suggestions.  I still have a jacked up tongue with muscle aches and pains.  My doctor wants me back in a couple of months to follow up on HIV test but he doesn't really run into these situations very often.  He thinks I need to have another test between 4-6 month post exposure.   Any help would be greatly appreciated...

thank you

I found a similar case like me after so long, actually i had the same symtoms as u do. I even have these symtoms till now after 7 and half months after axposure. I tested after 1 ,2 ,3,5,7 months after exposure all came back negative.I had hep c and hep b test after 1 and 7 months all came back negative. So now i am finally out of it and i dont bother about my symtoms. I have the same hairy and white tongue after the incident and i had all the symtoms except fever. So ur case sounds exactly like mine and keep yourself cool .

If you haven't been tested for STD's including HIV, then do so. While the tests for common STD's turn positive as soon as a few days after infection, you will need to wait at least 8 weeks for a solid answer to HIV.

" You didn't need hepatitis testing" - Does this statement apply assuming he has take hep-b shots in the past and is already immuned to it? It is my understanding that hep-b incubation period is between 45-180 days.
Also, it is my understanding that you do not need hep-c testing unless and until you had anal sex but hep-b is transmitted through vaginal intercourse.
Your HIV tests seem to have gotten you off the hook though(as better worded by skerd ;-)).

Here are two brand NEW questions..ones that I have searched for extensively on this forum and which ARE, albeit conservatively, answered affirmatively on many other websites, including cdc.gov, and thebody.com

1) How about the absence of any ARS symptoms within the first two to six weeks? Is this possible for a STILL possible HIV Positivie case?

2) How about the absence of any ARS symptoms after the first 6 weeks to twelve weeks? Is there still a possibility for a HIV Positive case?

Of course, symptoms mean nothing and test results mean everything, I was wondering are there a good number of HIV + cases where there were no or few symptoms in the first six to twelve weeks and the test result was still positive?

Thanks,

Yes, if your symptoms were due to HIV, the October HIV test would have been positive.  The test negative result proves your symptoms were not due to HIV.  Period, full stop.  Symptoms never are a reliable indicator of ARS.  A hundred other things, all more common than ARS, cause the identical symptoms--mostly garden variety, benign viral infections.  And your symtoms aren't really typical of HIV anyway.  (You don't mention fever, which probably means you didn't have an elevated temperature.  By itself, that fact is strong evidence against ARS.)

Your doc is being too conservative, and probably is not up to date on modern HIV tests.  A test 8 weeks after exposures is plenty; some experts say 3 months to be absolutely safe, but 4-6 weeks is definitely not necessary.

HIV test "generation" isn't an issue. Even the oldest test, not used for over 10-15 years, would be positive by 3 months.  Every test currently in use almost always is positive by 6-8 weeks.

Good luck-- HHH, MD

You didn't need hepatitis testing.  Yes, other STDs would have shown up by now.  There is no test for HPV.  Everybody gets HPV anyway, and you probably already have had it.  We all have.

you've had more than enough testing and do not need to test further. your 8 week is conclusive, rest easy guy, it's all good!! go out and celebrate, you are healthy. as for the girl, I'm sorry, that sounds very deceitful.
