Hiv test symptoms

Dear Dokter,

Here are the facts

August 25: had contact with a call girl. Sucking (hard) and licking nipples for 10 minutes. Cleaned mouth with moutwash before starting to suck the breasts.
September 22: in the evening I developed some slime in the back of my throat, between nose cavity and throat. This further developed in a painfull and red throat dry coughing and runny nose. Also had some fever around 38.
September 23: got antibiotics. Painfull throat went away quickly aswell as fever. Throat remained red though.
October 2: due to big worries about hiv infection and above symptoms had an hiv test based on blood sample. Test was done by a lab in belgium don't know any details about which generation test.
October 5: test results negative big relief
October 12: symptoms flare up again and this time worse. Snot or slime in back of throat accompanied by painfull throat and slight fever. Day after painfull throat gone but quite red. Very runny nose severe congestion dry cough higher than usual temperature but no real fever. If i take a deep breath i need to cough and is as ifbsomething needs to come out but only very little slime comes out

I'm very worried again. I thought all was behind after the test result but now i have these symptoms again i'm very worried again. Did i have my test too early

Welcome to the forum.  Thanks for your question.

This event carried no risk at all for HIV. The virus cannot be transmitted by oral contact with skin, including breasts and nipples; and it has never been known to be transmitted by cunnilingus (oral-vaginal contact). Your symptoms don't concer me at all; they are not typical for a new HIV infection.

But even that really doesn't matter.  HIV lab test results ALWAYS overrule exposure history and symptoms, as long as the test is done sufficiently long after exposure.  Your test was not done too early, and the negative result proves that HIV from the exposure you have described is not the cause.  In case you are concerned about things you have read about HIV test reliability before 3 months after exposure, take a look at this thread:

http://www.medhelp.org/posts/show/1704700

If your symptoms continue or you otherwise remain concerned, see your doctor.  But you can be sure they are not caused by HIV, and I doubt they have anything to do with your sexual encounter in August.

Best wishes---  HHH, MD

HIV doesn't cause sinus infections or symptoms like you describe.  You have a cold or an allergy.  I won't make a psychiatric diagnosis, so I don't know if you are "paranoid" or not.  But you certainly are wrong to continue to be worried about HIV.

That will end this thread -- and please do not start another with the same questions.  Excessive anxiety-driven questions are not permitted and would risk being deleted without reply (and without refund of the posting fee).

Dear Dokter Handsfield,
I appologize for this long discussion, and occupying your time. If needed I am willing to pay a new fee, that would be no problem at all.

Yesterday i went to the docter (this time in China as I am an expat). She did a quick routine test, and found out my nostrils are swollen. She thinks I have a sinus infection. Got antibiotics again and some nose spray and something to loose the mucus from my dry cough. The dokter said it might be viral ... Temprature is going up now (37.8 yesterday evening, 37.5 in the morning). Very little mucuous is now also coming allong with my still very dry cough.

The viral thing scared me ... linking it back to HIV. I understand you state HIV can not be transmitted through nipples, but somehow (in my imagination) I see a possibility. What if something came out of the nipples. There is mucous membrane in the month, and I understand HIV is transmited in mucous membranes. Although the mouth is a hostile environment, I cleaned my mouth before with mouthwash (probably making it a friendly environment).

Am I completely wrong (paranoid)?

Best regards

I'm confident routine testing in Belgium is more or less the same as in the rest of western Europe and North America.  If you had a duo test for both p24 antigen and HIV antibody, your 5 week result is definitive.  If an antibody test only, it's probably around 95% reliable.  But since you had a zero risk exposure, you can consider a 95% reliable result to be definitive proof you were not infected.

Dear Dokter Handsfield

Many thanks for the quick reply.

I read the thread related to timing of tests. My test based on a blood sample was done in Belgium but i have no further details about the type of test. I may assume their testing would be based on most recent techniques making the test at 5 weeks not too early?

Best regards
