Probably Paranoia

Ok, so here is my situation:

I had a sexual encounter with a close female friend of mine about a month ago. I am unaware of her HIV status but I do know she is fairly promiscuous. As we were fooling around she tried to put me inside of her before I had put a condom on. I'm not sure if my penis actually went inside of her but I can't be sure it didn't. I immediately stopped her and put a condom on. We proceeded to have protected sex afterwards. Currently, a month later, I am experiencing lymph node pain and swelling, drowsiness, white coated tongue, flushing in my face and some of the heaviest sleep I have ever experienced but no fever, night sweats, diarrhea, vomiting or sore throat. I am scheduled to be tested Friday. I realize that the chances of this being HIV are incredibly slim but I would still like to know your take on it.

Questions:
1. If the head of penis entered her vagina for 5 seconds tops what are the odds of infection?

2. Does it come down to if the opening of my penis touched vaginal secretions or not?

3. If she was exceedingly wet and rubbed the opening of my penis right in vaginal fluid wouldn't that make it easier to catch?

4. Do my symptoms sound similar to anything else you can think of?

P.S. Thank you so much for your service. It's nice to find a forum like this that doesn't just list the same generic symptoms that throw everyone into anxiety attacks. Feel free to lambast me if you find my question/situation ridiculous. I could probably use it considering my current psychological state. Thanks!

help21 : i am in strikingly similiar situation as yours .
unprotected oral , then 5 secs. unprotected(which i did nto even want , my eyes were closed when she inserted) & then on protected .
no ejaculation , had to masterbate to ejaculate finally.
she is a sex-worker in taiwan.

symptoms : from 3rd day got sore throat with swollen painful lymph nodes in neck & swollen tonsils (diagnosed as strep throat by ENT) but it is very persistent & still needs anti-biotics & anti-biotics seem to work well .
no fever , no chills , no swollen lymph nodes at any other part.
very very very immensely anxious & worst of all NO-ONE to talk to
except to me-myeslf. Cant't even show the anxiety on my face so trying every minute to keep a straight face & it's killing me.
4 week mark in 3 more days & i wanna go testing next week at 33 days mark , but the wait has made me very anxious.

So...if someone happened to be at the absolute peak strength of their viral load would transmission be possible in a situation like this? Not so much worried at this point, just curious.

I don't know. Aren't we're exposed to probably thousands of viruses ALL THE TIME? Yet our immune systems are generally pretty effective at fighting them off and we usually don't get sick. I don't know why HIV would be any different.

Thanks for the info.  Is the aquisition of HIV maybe a cumulative effect over time then? (i.e. repeated exposures to infected person and/or needles)

The biological explanations are not fully known, certainly not by me.  But the fact of needing substantial exposure to large numbers of virus particles is clear.

Dr.

The statement about "large amounts of virus"

How does this work then. Logic tells me that for a single cell to be infected it only needs to encounter a single virus. Are you saying that for the chance of the single virus to encounter the right kind of receptor cell, requires a large amount of virus for infection to be likely ?

Many Thanks.

Mellow out.  Your username says it all. You seem to have the impression that minor exposures can transmit HIV, that "just one virus" is all it takes.  Not so.  It takes large doses of virus injected into the body.  The chance yur partner has HIV is extremely low--but since she is a "close friend", just ask her!

1) Zero, or close to it.  2) It takes much more exposure than that.  3) Not really.  4) About a hundred other things, all more common than HIV; anxiety is high on the list, especially for somone who refers to his own "current psychological state".

Search the threads for "HIV transmission risk".
