Doctors,
I am a 43 year old heterosexual male. I posted this in Health forums. I had unprotected, vaginal sex with a female friend who'd recently gone through a divorce in late November - early December, 2013.
She and I had sex on December 13, 2013 and December 14, 2013 - one time on each day. On December 13, I noticed a cut on my penis after we'd had sex. The cut bothered me, but it didn't bother me as I knew at that time I was not HIV positive and had no reason to believe she was HIV positive considering she was newly divorced - barely a month. I've known this lady for a few years and have no reason to believe she is promiscuous and we'd had sex numerous times over the years prior to her marriage.
On February 3, 2014, my friend called me and told me that she was diagnosed with HIV during the week of January 27. I took an Oraquick saliva test on February 8; approximately 7.5 weeks or 54 days after December 14. My concern is real and obvious. I realize that I tested within the 6-8 week window, but... My friend also tells me that her doctor told her that her chances of her transmitting the virus are "slim to none given the current health of her immune system".
I am somewhat nervous about all of this, but I try to balance it out with facts; and the fact is that there are now people who have been diagnosed early, having "normal" life expectancy. My biggest concern outside of the obvious is that I am a pilot and routinely have to undergo aero-medical exams by a government doctor and an HIV diagnosis could create some complications, but I think the FAA has medical protocols in place to monitor HIV positive pilots with respect to the virus and the pilots ability to keep flying. What say you? I am asking primarily about my test and the aero-medical piece as well.
