risk of hiv with chylamdia

7 weeks and 2 days ago ( Dec 8) I (female, not drug user, no history of stds) had unprotected sex with a male (twice in a 5 hour span). 5 days after encounter tested positive for chlamydia. Blood work was drawn Dec 15 for HIV, which was negative.  I was so devastated by the chlamydia I didn't not ask status of other tests. I  was test in Aug and all tests were negative, including HIV,  and he was the only guy I was with. I am tested on regular basis. Not due to high risk but have done it since I was first sexually active.

a HIV test 1 week after possible exposure tells me that I didn't I have HIV prior to Dec 8, correct? Only std or sti test that positive after dec 8 was chlamydia, first and only time I will let that happen. I do realize that I maybe causing more harm to myself by obsessing over this!

I have felt fine overall no symptoms  until week 5-6. slight swore throat, running nose and slight cough. Swollen gland on neck for 2 days, very slightly. No fever, no rash. Some headaches over the last 7 weeks but I suffer from tension headaches now and then, or headaches in general. These symptoms came and went in a week. Week 7 had tender and slightly swollen gland back of jaw just below ear lobe. Better after 2-3 days.

re-tests done for chlamydia negative, doctor said would be good to wait 3 months for hiv, but not always needed. I went for second blood test at 7 weeks 1 day. Waiting for result....

What is my risk with hiv since I had chlaymdia after this one encounter? First time I have ever had to be concerned about hiv and I am driving myself crazy. And some major anxiety!

any advise or information you can share would be great!

Thank for your comments and advise. Your words have eased some of my anxiety, for now. But I will know for sure in a few days. I do not want to experience this whole situation (positive sti) ever again nor the anxiety and fear that follows about many other related aspects. thanks again for taking the time for me and for many others.

You do not need testing for other STDs.  The common STDs would have yielded positve results by now.  As far as further testing is concnerned, virtually all HIV infections are currently detectable at 8 weeks so you do not need to wait for three months.   And yes, the tests used in Canada are the same as well use here in the U.S.  EWH

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my question and probably my over obsessive thinking that I had put myself at a higher risk with that encounter because I contract one sti. I should know my results in a few days, still very anxious about getting them.
I still have my concerns and a very heavy weight on shoulders for this, but I will try to keep that anxiety in check after readying your comments.

I may get a final test for all sti's and std's at 3 months to help simply with the anxiety I have from this whole ordeal. Or is the hiv test the whole one that has a 3 month window period?

Btw, I will in canada. Do the tests vary from the US?

Welcome to our Forum.  Your risk for HIV from the exposure you describe is very low.  Let me try to put things into perspective.

I understand that having gotten chlamydia it is natural to wonder what else might have been acquired but chlamydia is much, much more common than HIV.  The likelihood that your got HIV is mathematically less than 1 in 5 million.  I come to that figure by pointing out that the chance that your partner had HIV is less than 1 in 10,000 if he does not use drugs or have sex with other men.  Then, even if he had HIV, after two episodes of intercourse, your risk for HIV would still be less than 1 in 500 (risk is less than 1 in 1000 for each act).

I predict that your 7 week test will be negative.  Since at 7 weeks a standard HIV test will detect over 95% of recently acquired HIV infections, the negative result that I am confident that you will get is further, very strong evidence that you did not get HIV.

I would not worry about your symptoms.  These are non-specific.

Try not to worry.  EWH
