Hi Ciana
You're very welcome and I'm glad we have been of assistance.
In answer to your further questions:-
No we don't use the Abbott 4th generation testing strips. This is simply a logistics issue as we are 5 minutes walking distance from our laboratory. The Abbott tests are very reliable but since we are so close and the turnaround time at the lab so fast there is no particular need for us to use them.
With respect to the HIV testing window, you are actually incorrect. The UK Health Protection Agency advises use of a 4th generation test and if negative then the patient can revert to a testing protocol which suits their particular circumstances.
The UK Health Protection Agency HIV Testing Algorithm can be view here -

Hello Ciaran,
I will reply to your post, as Sean is not currently available. I hope you do not mind.
I can assure you that you have not contracted HIV. First of all, the sexual encounter did not involve any significant risk if HIV infection; secondly, your negative test results at 5 and 7 weeks are totally conclusive and you do not need to do any further testing. In many years of clinical experience, we have never had any case of someone testing negative with the HIV Duo test at seven weeks and then testing positive later.
The test that we use in our clinic is very similar to the one you had, but not exactly the same. We use the VIDAS HIV Duo, manufactured by BioMerieux Laboratories).
Best wishes,
Dr Jose
Another Irish in the same boat exactly future wife and all. Got 6 week clear did 12 week yesterday but developed swollen lymph node under left arm, still scared crazy. How common is it to test neg at 6 weeks but pos at 12. The Abbott architect duo agab test was used. Please help!!!
Hello
Yes indeed you are HIV negative and you can stop worrying about it. You do not need to test again.
very best, Sean
Sorry to butt just wanted to say great news Ciaran! I had a similar worry about blood. The NHS is still sticking to the three month window period guidelines as they are very being ultra cautious. It's probably best to be on the safe side but this is causing a lot of confusion. I was tested at 10 weeks with a NHS Antigen and Antibody test - a Duo, I guess. I panicked about the 12 week window period and called the GUM clinic. A health advisor confessed that they didn't really know why they stuck to the three month window when they now do the Duo Antigen and Antibody tests. She apparently called the lab (the big Health Protection Agency regional centre in Bristol) and asked them why. "Just being cautious" was the reply. No real scientific reason was cited. So there you go.
Hi Doctors,
My 12 week duo test came back negative.
I am now trying me best to move on with my life after this awful experience.
Sean, many thanks for the link above. My understanding is that if a patient test negative after an initial test and where that patient shows all symptoms associated with hiv a second test at 7-10 days is recommended. If negative again the patient is considered to be negative. Am i correct in my analysis. It is a little unclear as to when the initial test should be carried out however as you guys are experts in this area and have dedicated such time and effort I will take it that 28 days or after is the appropriate time i.e. 1 month. assuming a 4th generation test is used.
Also, in your opinion am I 100% negative from HIV. Note I run almost every day and do not use drugs. My future wife wants to start to try for a baby and I will not proceed until I know she and the baby would be 100% safe. Note I have tested negative for all other STD's. A full STD screening took place 2 weeks after exposure and I have shown no symptoms of STD's other than thrush.
Also, this is my last question in this forum. I trust you guys have to exert all you rime into helping those who have contracted this awful disease and god bless you guys for being there for men and women like me who suffer form this anxiety but most of all for those who suffer from the disease itself.
I had the duo p24/antibodies test at 10 days and 6 weeks. Both were negative.
I took PEP within 72 hours for the full 28 day course.
What would be the window now?
Are they accurate?
I am full of anxiety
Hi Doctors,
I expect to get the result of my 12 week test today. If negative I will leave this whole episode behind me. If positive (which I have prayed and prayed it wont be) you will have your first case of someone testing positive after a 7 week negative on a duo test.
I would however like to thank you for the service you provide to many worried people out there. It is very helpful however icer worried people like me do tend to listen to your advice however we are always conscious of the 3 month period set down in many countries testing guideline i.e. the UK.
God bless you in the work you do every day.
Many thanks,
C
Also, do yu use the abbott architect 4th generation tests in your clinic.
Many thanks in advance
Ciaran
