Oral sex and HIV Transmission

Hey Doctor, im really freaking out right now. I think I have some symptoms of HIV. Let me explain. Im a 20  yr old bisexual male from the US. My exposure to HIV: I performed oral sex on about 6 different guys, their HIV status I don't know, they all ejaculated in my mouth. The only thing that is worrying me is the fact that i chipped my tooth like 4 months before, and ever since then my tooth sometimes bleeds. Im really freaking out. Now, 6 weeks later... My lymph nodes are SO swollen, and I have a terrible sore throat, I can barely eat or drink anything. I've had terrible headaches, and minor diahrrea. My body constantly hurts and I always seem to be very tired. I took a strep test and it came back negative. Do these sound like symptoms? What is my risk of getting HIV? If not HIV what does this sound like??

Hello

It is unlikely that this is HIV as oral sex is an inefficient way of transfer.

However, if as you say you had a significant injury in your mouth and one of the guys was to have a high HIV viral load ( a high amount of HIV virus in their semen and blood) then it is possible that HIV transfer may occur. Unlikely but possible.

Much more likely is that you have some other condition unrelated to HIV which is causing the symptoms. A broken tooth for 4 months suggests that your oral health is not what it should be so that might be a logical starting point.

There are other sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhoea and chlamydia and also herpes that may cause the symptoms you complain of.

I suggest you go and see a doctor face to face, explain exactly whats occurred and then take his or her advice on testing. One of the tests will include an HIV test.

best wishes, Sean
