Oral Sex

I posted on the commmunity forum, but thought i would post here too.  I appreciate your response.

I am a 25y.o female super confused about this.  The threads I have read say is is a low risk activity.  So are you telling me that it may not happen.  I had a one-time with a guyin late July.  I gave him oral to orgasm which I swallowed.  I was pretty drunk and no secret I'm not proud.  He is on unknown hiv status and unknown iv drug use, although it is doubtful.  I am super scared now and really don't know what to do.  I am waiting on my HIV test results.  I havent had any "flu-like" symptoms in the last few months that I know of, other than those that could be attributed to stress and anxiety about having HIV.  I'm not sure of the symptom timeline or whatever, so I'm not even sure about symptoms.  I know you will say sympoms are not an indicator, but I would have thought I would have had something.  Any thoughts?  They are greatly apprecieated.

what is the chance of getting HIV from the woman in this case. i.e., if the woman has HIV and I receive unprotected oral sex from her?
Thank you.

Yes, transmission risk depends on viral load, as well as a whole bunch of other factors.  In some people, the risk of transmission from oral sex probably is higher than 1 in 10,000.  In others, it's lower. But when you have no knowledge of such factors for a particular exposure, the average is the best one can do.  But what real difference would it make if the risk were higher?  If you figure a 1 in 1000 chance  your partner had HIV, plus a 1 in 1000 risk of transmission (10 times higher than the 1 in 10,000 estimate), your risk of having caught HIV would be 1 in a million instead of 1 in 10 million.  That is, none of this makes any difference:  the chance you caught HIV is zilch.

Does the chance of cathing it depend on thier counts?  If someone doesn't know they are +hiv they could have higher counts right?  Or an I totally off base?  I will not post another follow up.

People rarely catch HIV by swallowing infected secretions.  Even a baby nursed by an HIV infected mother has only a 10-15% chance of catching HIV over 6-12 months of nursing, despite swallowing several ounces of HIV-infected milk every day.  The average risk of catching HIV by performing fellatio on an HIV infected man is estimated at 1 in 10,000.  And since your partner wasn't a known gay/bi man or an injection drug user, the chance he had HIV is very low.

You're right, most people with new HIV have symptoms.  But many people don't and you are right that presence or absence of symptoms doesn't influence my judgment of your low risk.  There is almst no chance you caught HIV during the event you describe.  But if you remain nervous, have an HIV test 6-8 weeks after the event.
